The view setting in Word can affect how things appear on screen so try changing that. Might be good to state what version of Word too. Thanks for that tip, Bill, and I'll try to remember it. I got caught up in a brain-consuming pursuit and forgot nearly everything I knew. :-) I have Cute PDF writer, and could do that easily. Most times, however, I want to do a little editing (if nothing else, place some name or date in Boldface or colored font) to emphasize one thing or another to the networker. The editing capability, and the German language function, are the reasons I'm sticking with PAF until it won't work any longer. Lila, I have found fewer problems by printing to a PDF writer. That way it looks the same to everyone regardless what computer or operating system is being used. Two excellent free PDF writers are PrimoPDF and CutePDF. They can be used by selecting the PDF writer as the "printer" for any print job from any software. (When printing to a PDF writer in PAF, you need to remove the check mark from "Print to file".) Thank you, Gary!! As soon as I switched to Print Layout (Word 2003) everything was fine. I usually run Word in the Print Layout view, so I didn't even think about it having changed from that. All is well, and thanks again!! Hi Listers, Last week I used the German function of PAF and tried to print a Descendany Chart to file. When I opened it in Word, nothing appeared on the screen except the headings and the connecting lines--no names an dates. I didn't have time to work with it and thought I'd done something wrong. This morning I was using the English function and the same thing happened. This time I looked at print preview, and the preview looked fine, so I printed it and the printed copy is fine. I closed it and attached it to E-mail and sent it to myself as a test. It opens with the lines only showing on the screen in Word, but prints fine, so I sent it on to my networking partner. No time for feedback yet, but I've warned her not to panic when it opens, because it will (I hope) print okay. I can't recall this ever happening before, and still wonder if I'm doing something stupid. Any ideas? Lila in frigid Nebraska
I have been feeding PAF for several years now, as many of you can no doubt understand, and have for the past several weeks been trying to clean up all of the bad things that have crept into the database. It is nearing payday, the day where I get something back from all of the work done, I want to begin publishing to friends and family. If I don't there will not be any left to give the documents to. ( Skip this section if you like, I just got to remorsing ) I began my research using paper and pencil, it was replaced that with a self written program, written in Focus on a PDP-8 computer(with teletype input/output) it was stored on paper/mylar tape, let me see that would have been around 1969. The data input using that program is in my PAF database today, of course it made many migrations from those days until now. If I can recall all of the programs; my first program which I called Roots, the next was a basic program which ran on a computer from the "Computer & Light Company", input was on a homemade data terminal with CRT tube and normal keyboard, output was on screen or via rs-232 to any rs-232 device. Storage was on a cassette recorder. The next was a PC based program, although not IBM compatible, the TI PC was a lot better machine than the IBM in the beginning. The program was another home brew. I used this until I bought Roots, it then went very quickly, roots - roots III - roots IV and then I went over to FTM, again it went quickly, FTM - FTM 1 - FTM 2 - FTM 3 - FTM 4 - FTM 5, FTM 6, FTM 7- whoa, I said, these update costs are piling up and there is no land in sight. I happened to be in Salt Lake about this time and bought a CD with a version of PAF on it, and have used it ever since, I have only had three different versions, the last one changed the web creation, so I have a copy of it still installed, but the new version is what I use for data entry and changes. PAF has served me well and is a very good program! ( end of remorsefulness ) I read about PAFWiz on this board and have been looking at it and like the features I see, the reporting looks good, the web creation is good. The price is not bad. The question I have is should I buy PAFWiz 2.0 and stay with PAF or should I move on to Ancestral Quest 12? Did I say 12, maybe that answers my question, but maybe not. There are a couple of additional features in AQ that I like, Citation reuse and the ability to place citation on dates and places, and common law relationships. The price difference between PAFWiz and Ancestral Quest 12 is only $5.00. Has anyone else had the same thoughts? Has anyone used Ancestral Quest for any length of time? Comments appreciated. Best regards, Dave Vaughan
I have used both. But am still using AQ11 and PAF5.. and PAFWIZ.2.The reason I have not upgraded to AQ12 is because of the Web Page Creation. Both of the AQ12 and the PAFWIZ.2.10 use the UTF-8 (Unicode) for the Web Pages and my older FrontPage (Editor) will not work with the Unicode.. I would have to buy a later FrontPage (which is discontinued) to Edit my Web Site... Still thinking about making the change. If that works for you and you want to change..They (AQ12 and PAFWIZ.2.10 work off the PAF5 Data Base... PS I am also waiting for the New FamilySearch to roll over in our Temple District as I hear that their will be some good upgraded programs that will be VERY Compatible with that.. (Like PAF Insight new Genealogy ) and a few others.. I can only guess that it may be that some steps must be taken before the change you made is properly recognized throughout the program. It is really strange that a totally unrelated individual showed up though. Bill > While printing out a pedigree chart for a maternal cousin, the oddest > thing happened! Jan: Without more details, I can't give a specific answer as to what happened. But as the programmer who wrote most of the PAF reports, I can guess that this is a rare bug that would happen only when a certain set of unusual circumstances pull together to confuse the program. You probably don't have to worry about it being a common problem. The Church hasn't updated PAF in nearly 6 years, so it seems unlikely that this will ever be corrected in PAF. But Ancestral Quest has the same reports, and if it ever happens again, I'd appreciate you contacting me so we can verify whether AQ has the same problem, and if so, we can get it fixed. (Actually, I think I remember fixing a bug like this a couple of years ago, so I think it has been fixed in AQ.) While printing out a pedigree chart for a maternal cousin, the oddest thing happened! I put her in the number 1 position, and on the printout, listed as "spouse of number 1," was a man not even connected to that branch of my family but rather from my paternal branch! I reprinted and it was correct the second time. Is there any explanation for this? It concerns me, now, that other erroneous charts may have resulted without me noticing. Thanks, Bill. One time it managed to give me *ONLY* the custom fields, not the standard ones; another time it wouldn't give the custom ones; another, I _think_ it gave me everything I wanted, but in no order identifiable by living humans. I'm beginning to suspect that only a masochist would do this more than once, and that ATC just remembering that AFN is really ID-1937 is easier over the long-haul. No I didn't do screen captures ... it has always SOUNDED as if this were fairly simple to pull off, sooooooo.... It would help to know what you mean by it never comes out right. That does not help to identify the problem. Do you have a screen capture or such? Bill Can several someones give me idiot-proof step-by-steps on creating a customized template that contains ALL the usual b m d dates and places fields plus some highly individualized ones, such as ID-1937 I do what the instructions seem to be telling me, but it never seems to come out right. J.M. Green When you are finished working on your PAF database, make sure you close it from the top X, not the one right under it. That way the next time that you turn on your computer and open your PAF, it should open up the last data base that you had open. At least it works that way for me. The answer is simple. Don't close the file before closing PAF. If the file is left open it will be open the next time you start PAF. It used to be that when I opened PAF it would come up with the file I last used. I did something!! Now it comes up with a search screen etc. How do I go back to what I had? TX J M Green Email: MailTo:
Apparently you had an earlier version of Acrobat installed on the previous machine. I am pretty sure that by looking for the Exchange Driver, that is what is being asked. I may be wrong and you had some other PDF conversion software installed. However, that sounds like the problem.
