    3. LaVerne: Another idea is to create a custom event that will show on reports as an event. I'm not sure what to call it -- Donation of Body, or something like that. In my mind, the main purpose for having the Burial field next to the Death field (like having the Christening field next to the Birth field), is so that if you can't locate the death information on an ancestor, at least you can find something close. Burial is, after all, pretty common. But in this case, there is no burial, so ignore it. It doesn't fit. Create the custom event that fits. Gaylon Ross G.H. 3. Have you checked with the hospital what they do with the unused parts? There may actually be a cremation and a final resting place. Along with the other excellent advice, remember that just because there is a place to put information does not mean it is a sin to leave it blank. If the deceased had asked that the circumstances of his disposition not be made public I would only enter in the notes something like "not buried or cremated", if only to alert later researchers not to look for such. 3. Check carefully that all your hardware will work with Vista. I bought a new computer with Vista OS last year. My Hewlett Packard scanner will not work with it. At first HP thought they were going to provide a driver to enable it to work then decided that the model was too old and they would not provide a driver for it. So I had to get a new scanner even though my old one had worked perfectly. So I got a scanner/printer combined as my printer didn't quite work as it should have with Vista. Now I have to pay an arm and a leg for ink cartridges for the new printer. I could get generic ink cartridges for my old printer that were 1/3 of the price but there are no generic cartridges available for my new printer so far. PAF 5 works fine with Vista though. For specific programs you should go to the company and read their information about Vista compatibility. Many programs such as PAF will run fine, others may have a free patch or update (depending on how old the program is), and others will need to be upgraded to a new version. I would also suggest running the Vista Upgrade Advisor http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx It will give you a report on the compatibility of your current software (even though you are not planning on installing vista on the current laptop). Finally, if you do have particular programs that would be expensive to update and will not run on Vista, consider getting a new computer that still has XP (Dell is selling them), or dual boot XP and Vista. You have an XP license with your current laptop, and IF you have a real XP installation disk (not a restore disk) it is perfectly legal to take XP off your current computer and install it on the new. We need to stop letting Microsoft create these ripple effects of forced upgrades to otherwise perfectly good software that we have purchased. If more people just say no to Vista, it will be a short term OS like Windows ME. The only program that I had to buy was an update for WordPerfect to version X3, for $30.00. The only problem I have is with my other genealogy program RootsMagic, as I can't create a large Wall Chart in a format that I can have my local Graphics Print shop, make a copy. 3. Thanks for your help, however, I am not a blood relative of the person I am trying to connect to, thus the relationship tool will never give me any results. I was hoping there was something else with PAF that would work, or perhaps someone would suggest software that could do what I want. So far I've received a suggestion to look for a gedcom reader that might have this feature. Maybe someone else will know which one or have another piece of software in mind. 3. Sandy: Ancestral Quest 12 works with your PAF database. It also has a very unique feature that might help you here. In addition to the relationship calculator, it has the ability to generate Custom ID numbers using some of the standard numbering systems for genealogy databases. It should be able to create an ID that will give you the relationship for any person in the file to any other person. Typically, you start with one person (like yourself), and ask it to generate the IDs. If you use either the Dollarhide numbering system or a similar system we created for AQ before we learned of the Dollarhide system, you should be able to see how any person is related to you. (Both systems combine the Ahnentafel numbering for ancestors and the Henry numbering for descendants.) One limitation you might have on using this feature is the fact that a PAF database can only store 10 characters for the Custom ID field (whereas the AQ database allows for 40 characters). If your relationship is quite complex, it may not fit in the 10 characters. The help that comes with AQ will explain in full detail the codes, and give you several examples for how to interpret them to find how someone is related to you. Here is a short example to give you an idea (this was taken from the Help and modified slightly): "'4+163.7' - Remember that the period indicates an ahnentafel number follows, and that the ‘+’ symbol for a spouse was converted to this period. So, reading right to left, this number is the ancestor whose ahnentafel number is 7 (the mother's mother) of the spouse of the 3rd child of the 6th child of the 1st child of the person who is a direct ancestor of the root person, having an ahnentafel number of 4 (the father of your father)." This would take up 7 of the 10 characters in the Custom ID field of your PAF database. Hope this helps.
