    3. If they really want to stay with PAF I would recommend they go with Family Insight (previously known as PAF Insight) or Ancestral Quest. That way they can sync with New FamilySearch when it becomes available. Many may not be aware of it but Legacy and RootsMagic both have built into them a feature similar to PAF Insight and can search the IIGI and will sync with NFS. They have many more bells and whistles included in them and are cheaper than buying all those PAF add-ons they might be considering. These programs are free for FHCs and can be tried out there or you can download demo's from their website. I would recommend they try all the programs out there and then make their decisions. Just because they are familiar with PAF and consider it easier to use they might be surprised at how much user friendly the other commercial programs really are. At least with the IGI search features in Legacy and RootsMagic you don't get the disappointment of the program crashing after doing hours of work and loosing everything you got off the IGI like you see happen with PAF Insight and PAF. 1. Re: [PAF-5] PAF add-ons
    2. Ruth, You list Ancestral Quest but it is not an add-on to PAF. It is a full genealogical program like PAF, RootsMagic, or Legacy. However, that is not my main message. The add-on I would like to tell you about is called "PAF 5 datescanner". This program will scan all the dates in your PAF 5 data file and inform you of all those that are not in the correct format. Most people don't know about this program because it is rather new. It is a shareware program which means you can try it before you buy it. It is available from www.1wbs1589.info. In my opinion, every user of PAF 5 should have this program on their computer. Lorin Lund wrote it and gives it free to family history centers. We have loaded it onto all of our FHC computers and encourage patrons to use it and correct any bad dates before creating a temple submission. I have it on my own computer also. 3. You may want to then clarify in the individual's notes that the 'challenge' is for parent link or some other purpose. Here (US), the word 'challenged' has often been a term used to identify an individual with 'special needs' or who has a developmental disability. 1. [PAF-5] Notes for a Marriage
    2. Ross G.H. Cotton
    3. I have a problem with PAF 5 that I have never been able to solve, even though I have used PAF for over 20 years and don't want to change. This problem will, I think, really test your knowledge of PAF? When I want to enter a Note for a record, with the Edit Individual screen open, I select Alt+n to open the Select Notes screen, then double click on Marriage to open the Edit Notes screen "Marriage: notes for xxx", to input a note relating to that marriage, such as a difference in other records. Whatever I input using this method will print out in a Book, Individual Summary or Family Group Sheet; provided they are preselected in the Options for that printout. However the note is then printed in a location, relating to that one person and not the family. However my problem is with the Family Screen; when I highlight the marriage Box, and right click to select Notes, to open the Edit Notes screen for Marriage of both xxx and yyy. Anything I enter will will NOT print out in a Book. WHY! It will print out in a Family Group Sheet. I have checked and rechecked for any options that I can select to solve the problem, without any luck. Does anybody have a solution? The reason I like to input my marriage notes using the marriage box is because they apply to the marriage of both persons, and not only to one or the other. This problem doesn't occur when I print out a report using PAF Wiz, or Ancestral Quest, using my PAF data. However the title Marriage: does not show? I used Challenged in one case where the adopted child was from a previous marriage to a male whose surname wasn't given me; I entered the child as if he belonged to the couple and added CHALLENGED so I'd look at the notes to see why. (g) You get those options under EDIT --> Parent HTH Cheryl -- There should be no attachments on this message, unless I specifically mentioned them above.

    3. There is really no answer to what a person "should" purchase. It all depends on what they are trying to accomplish, their budget, and what functions they would perfer to automate rather than do manually. I have limited need to print charts so PAF Companion or other charting programs are of low interest to me. Others are charting fools. Non-members, or members who are only submitting occasional names to the temple, may not see a need for programs such as Insight that speed up the search for ordinance information. And of course, very fine genealogy can still be done with paper and pencil and no software at all. What would probably be most valuable for your meeting is an outline of what each piece of software does, what it costs, and perhaps a short demonstration of how it might be of benefit in a particular situation. Beyond that, it is such an individual decision (like what is the best car to buy) that each person has to evaluate their own needs and desires. I will send you in another email a 4 page Word document of a presentation I gave last summer of "Software Gems" for the genealogist. It has a (very) short description of what the software does and includes web links so people can go to the site and research it for themselves. And since many are free programs anyway, they can test those with no financial commitment. Feel free to make copies to hand out. 3. I truly do not want to start an immense argument, but, since PAF is not updating, what additional software should a researcher purchase. Example, PAFwiz, PAF Pal, PAF Insight, Ancestral Quest, etc. Many at the local FHC are turning to Legacy, but some of us want to stay with PAF. Can someone give some guidelines that I can share at the next librarians meeting. Ruth

    1. Re: [PAF-5] Challenged
    2. I have no clue what happened to the body of the message. Anyway, Challenged is an option under the Parent links (right click on an individual and select edit parent links). You can add a link to parent (father or mother - new or find existing) or to a parent set with the find. If you highlight a parent set (or parent), you can then select whether they are biological, adopted, guardian, challenged, or disproved. The implication and apparently the use of the latter two are when the relationship has been challenged or disproved, particularly legally. In that case, adding a note is probably appropriate. Hope that clarifies the question that was asked and sorry for the blank post (have no idea how that happened!). Bill

    3. Challenged Relationship I have used this on several instances where there are differing opinions about the correct parents, and I haven't yet been able to come up with strong documentation of the correct parents. I use "challenged" to alert me and others that parentage hasn't yet been adequately documented. The rationale for the "challenge" I put in notes for that person. Tom in SLC

    3. Welll, the main reason I turn that option on, is to tell which child of a family I'm descended from. In my 1st example, there were two children listed to that couple, one shows as a grandparent, one shows as an uncle..but both are actually grandparents..That;s usefull information to me, and up to recently, I counted on it being correct for my needs..Though I suppose with closer in families, it still would be as expected...Still say bug, but don't see a workaround... PAF recalculates these relationships when requested to do so, it isn't updated automatically. To do so: Tools > Preferences > File > Relationship Indicators > Change > OK > OK PAF will now show the relationships on the status bar. The Relationship Calculator is a different tool from the Relationship Indicator that I have been referring to. Bill Buchanan
