    3. I sure agree with Beverly. I have been using PAF since it's inception and just love it. I don't know why people continually think they have to have all the "commercial" ones. And are you sure the Church is doing away with PAF? I don't think so. 3. While I don't go back to anything prior to PAF 2, I've used every version since then and never have I had a crash and loss of data. Ditto using the program PAF Insight. Most all of our patrons also use PAF and PAF Insight at the local family history center where I volunteer two days a week and, again, in 14 years I've yet to see a PAF crash and loss of data. Loss of data? Yes; but only because I or the person at the keyboard did something incorrectly. I'd like to read a step-by-step of what a user was doing when this happened. 3. I think that what Renee meant to say was that when you are using PAF Insight and spent many hours updating your records but did not save them, sometimes the program does crash especially when the database is large and then you will lose all of the updates that you have found to that point. That is why it is important to save the updates frequently. 3. Some people may be misinterpreting the function of the scanner. Just like the possible problem list in PAF that flags things like children born when the mother is older than a certain age, it is to alert you to *potential* problem dates, including times when extra characters and text are included in the date field. It is for you to decide if the flag is meaningful in that particular instance, just as you would decide if the woman really did have a child at age 50. That is never a good word to use in conjunction with a software program. What I am seeing and referring to is the "idiot" factor that causes people to be highly creative and for whatever reason not save after doing all their work in PAF Insight when leaving the program. At least with Legacy and RootsMagic the information is auto-saved and if you want to undo something you revert back to an earlier backup. Renee Zamora www.harrisena.com

I mean, if I'm wanting a list of people in my data who were born in South Dakota, PAFI isn't going to be as useful as PAF itself (or Legacy, or UFT, or whatever). Pragmatically, in archival mode, if PAF isn't going to be maintained or updated, /and if/ you want to keep it anyway, grab any add-on or utility you can while they're available, (And keep a computer they'll run ON) before those developers all switch gears toward the nFS-paradigm. Because, if you're not LDS, nFS isn't going to matter to you for a few years and that's a lot of genealogy in some families. 3. Ok, any date in Jan-Mar in the 1700's in the US or UK should be written double, because of the Julian to Gregorian calendar change, google that if more info is needed.. Sooo... Feb 29,1750(OS)for example (And I did not look it up to see if it's a leap year or not) Would HAVE to be written Feb 29, 1750/1. With the Old style calendar (Julian) the event would happen in 1750. In the New Sytle calendar (Gregorian) it would happen in 1751, as the year formerly ended in March..So some folks find the event date in one of those years, and "correct" the date to whichever year they found..The pafdate program flagged Feb 29, 1750/1 as an error..probably because one of those years was not a leap year..And I spent a couple of moments trying to fix something that was not broken..Justa pet peave, I feel better now...:-) Regards, Fred -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ross G.H. 3. Hi Renee, I have spent many thousands of hours using PAF and maybe 200 using PAF Insight, with no crashes or lost data. I consider PAF to one of the most reliable programs I have. Legacy6 on the otherhand (the free version) crashes from time to time on my computer. (I guess it comes to the caveat in new car brochures: "Actual mileage may vary depending upon the driver.") 2. Dear listers, Since you are working with a PAF 5 data file, the correct format as far as paf5datescanner is concerned is what PAF 5 allows. You will note that PAF 5 will accept a variity of date formats but always converts the date you input to a format of ddmmyyyy or the format you select in your preferences. There are recommended formats. The one I use, based on 25 years of experience, is to ensure the month is shown in Characters, not numbers. This can be 12 Jan 1920, or Jan 12 1920, or 1920 Jan 12. Any worthwhile genealogy program will facilitate one of the above formats.

    3. The date scanner just reads the date fields, gives you a list and tells you the potential problem, such as a Feb 29 in a year that is not a leap year, or extra characters that should not be part of a date. It is up to you to make the changes. I have posted a sample of the output below. Gary RIN: 250 -- Joan /Gaylord/ death: W.D.
