Maybe someone can explain this to me; and if something's wrong, let me know what and how to correct. I've created a new database that includes only people related to my mother (shirt-tail relatives etc), and am exporting from a much larger database in small increments. I've tiled the 2 databases, vertically, so I can view them both at the same time. Example, I have John Doe in the primary position in both. I create a GEDCOM of John's ancestors from the large database and then import it into the smaller one (my mother's). Then match and merge in her database. This goes well and all matches are successful. But when I finish the match/merge, a new person shows up in the primary position in database where I've just completed the match/merge. It's always the same person, and one who was not included in the import. I think, in situations like this before today, the primary person, in the database I've just imported into, has always been the person that was there before (as in the example of John Doe). Can someone tell me what's going on, why and what I can do to correct this happening? Thanks for your help. Dick Cazier Lakewood, CO
Hi all, According to the LDS web site PAF Companion is a free upgrade for those who have purchased an earlier version. I have purchased 5.1 but when I install 5.2 it deletes the older version and installs the evaluation version. I can't see where I can do an upgrade. Any suggestions? Thanks to everyone who helped me. Yes, I forgot to check the "print to file". Ruth
Ruth, you ask about making a copy of a chart to send with your Email. Before you create the report, you must check off the Print to File box in the lower right corner of the Reports and Charts window. By doing this, after you have created the chart, you will be asked where you want to save your chart. I normally save the chart to My Documents and then can easily add it as an attachment to my Emai. I would like to make a descendants chart of an individual and send it by e-mail. The only way that I can get a descendants chart is by going through "print reports". But I can not copy it to my e-mail message. What am I doing wrong? Ruth
Ruth, Did you click print to file on the bottom right of the Reports and Charts Screen? If not you need to. It will then be saved to your documents or where ever you direct it. You can then find it there and attach it to an email. Thank you to those who have answered my query about compatibility with PAF and Vista I can now go ahead and get myself a laptop with Vista. kind regards Ann
Also, teach your patron how to make *backups* of their PAF data. If he had a few sequential backups he could restore from the most recent, and if it happened to have the same corruption, step backwards in time until he found a good version. I agree with Bill that this is unlikely to be a virus. Even though he said he has never imported anyone else's GEDCOM, this does look like a classic case of importing his own file back, except perhaps for the screwed up links. Even if his ego will not admit it, it is *almost* certainly user error. However to be on the safe side he should also plug in the flash drive and scan it for viruses. He does not initially need to copy the file from the thumb drive. Just start PAF and go File_Open and navigate to that file and open it. If it is good, THEN copy it to the HD and overwrite the bad one. If it is also bad, no amount of experimenting is going to determine the source of the problem. However there may be an easy fix. Simply do a match merge on UIDs. If those are duplicates from his own file that he exported and then imported back he can clean them up in one swoop. One last option if the above are not viable. The duplicates are going to be mostly the highest RINs. Find out what RIN the duplicates start at and export everything before that number. Create a new database and import that GED into it. Since there may have been a few RINs reused when the problem was created there could be a little merging left to do, but that will still be a lot better than any other alternative. In the future - BACKUP. COPY your PAF file that is on the thumb drive to your hard drive, but give it another name. If your current file is JONES.PAF, copy the thumb file call it JONES2.PAF and work with it to see if you can find the problem, and you can experiment with the original file too by also copying it and using another name. Don't overwrite either of your copies until you can determine where the problem is. I don't think a virus would do that, I have never heard of it happening. I have several files with over 100,000 names in them and have never had that kind of problem. Hope this helps. Don Boudreaux Lafayette, La. I have never heard of a virus causing such a thing. It seems more like a description of someone having imported a gedcom their own data into their existing data file. There are no known viruses that specifically target PAF files. I agree with Bill that the most likely cause of what you describe is importing a gedcom that was previously exported from this file. This will cause a duplicate of each individual. Since I ran up into the same situation as you, I can answer your question. My Vista is the Home Premiun edition on a 17 inch Toshiba LapTop. Yes, PAF5, with all its features/functions, will work very well in Windows Vista. However that is not correct for other Genealogy programs that I use as a Utility program, with my PAF data. There is a problem with Roots Magic, when you want to use it to create a large Wall chart. The problem I found was not PAF nor Vista, but ME, as I was having many problems understanding Vista and its many changes from the old Window versions. It took me over 7 months of trying to solve various problems, asking dozens of questions and at times nearly tearing my hair out of my head. But at the end of it, it is now working just fine. In fact it now has many additional functions that can be used with Vista, ie. larger print on the screen, etc. When you have any troubles/questions, and you will, don't hesitate to ask for help. Actually, the problem Ross refers to is a problem with PDF drivers under Vista. RootsMagic runs great under Vista. Ross is trying to use a third party PDF driver to create a large wallchart PDF file which doesn't seem to work under Vista the same way it does under XP. - Bruce On Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 11:35 AM, Ross G.H. Let me make one clarification to this. If PAF can figure out what the date is, then it converts it to an internal format as mentioned. Later, when it displays, it, the date is displayed according to your preference settings. If PAF can't figure it out, then it alerts you that the data is not a standard date, and it stores the text exactly as you entered it, and will display it in the future exactly as you entered it. For example, you could enter that an event happened on the "2nd Thursday after the Harvest moon", or "The day after my grandmother passed away" I expect that a utility to examine dates will flag these as potential problem dates. Gaylon [email protected] wrote: > Dear listers, > Since you are working with a PAF 5 data file, the correct format as far as paf5datescanner is concerned is what PAF 5 allows. Then you should be thanking Almighty God, fasting. I've been using PAF since 2.0; in v 2.1, I was entering data in a published book, so we could update the information and republish it. Chapter 8 was HUGH (in fact, it was bigger than Chapters 1 thru 7 combined and if ONLY I had known that when I began the chapter). And 5 -- COUNT 'EM, 5 -- paragraphs from the end of Chapter 8 -- it froze the entire system. I had to do a COLD reboot. And upon reopening PAF, repeat from -- . I ended up retreating to the backup made at the end of Chapter 5 before I got a clean one that didn't freeze the system. Plod forward to 5 paragraphs to the end of Chapter 8 -- the system froze. Repeat from -- above. It took several attempts, with my frustration level rising geometrically with each, before I discovered that I could enter one family from the book, close PAF, play 1 hand of solitaire, reopen PAF, enter another family, close out,... This is *NOT* a fun way to enter several thousand names! And no, PAF support could only say "Never heard of such a thing." Just to get this (pedantically) correct - the change from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar - for the British Empire as it existed then - changed in 1752. The change was reflected in the fact that the 31st December 1751 was followed by 1st January 1752 (this part of the change - the new year starting on 1st January had already been adopted in Scotland since 1600). Previously, the change of year occurred between the 24th and 25th March, 24th March 1750 being followed by 25th March 1751. However it must be noted that many parish records had adopted the new style beginning of the year many years in advance of 1752; it cannot be assumed that all dates recorded in English or Welsh parish records before 1752 were automatically using the Julian calendar. I have seen some that used the 1st January as the start of a year prior to 1752. Each parish record needs to be examined to see what year end they were using. The impact of recording dates only effects dates between the 1st January and 24th March in the years before 1752. However - in my view and experience, the recording of pre 1752 dates (1 Jan to 24 Mar) as 10 Mar 1750/51 causes so much confusion I don't do it; I simply record the dates as found on the records and I expect any users of my database to know of the Julian/Gregorian mis match for English/Welsh records prior to 1752. Incidentally, every European country has a similar dating issue when it comes to the switch between Julian and Gregorian calendars intermingled with historic and legal calendars - so any one with mixed British and European ancestry will have a mixture of dating changes at different times. The second impact of the British change to the Gregorian calendar was that in order to align the dates with the rest of Europe and adopt the new rules to accommodating leap years, eleven days had to be deleted from the 1752 calendar - resulting in the 2nd September 1752 being followed by the 14th September (even in the American colonies!). To complete the re-dating as in the form of 1750/51, I often wonder why those who want to be exact about the Julian/Gregorian date don't also subtract 11 days on a decreasing basis back to 1582 to arrive at the "real" equivalent Gregorian date. For any who may have wondered why the British tax year always starts on the 6th April - it is because the bankers in 1752 insisted on a full years (365 days) interest despite the deletion of 11 days from the calendar and extended their (old style) year end to the 5th April. Sooo... Feb 29,1750(OS)for example (And I did not look it up to see if it's a leap year or not) Would HAVE to be written Feb 29, 1750/1. With the Old style calendar (Julian) the event would happen in 1750. In the New Sytle calendar (Gregorian) it would happen in 1751, as the year formerly ended in March..So some folks find the event date in one of those years, and "correct" the date to whichever year they found..The pafdate program flagged Feb 29, 1750/1 as an error..probably because one of those years was not a leap year..And I spent a couple of moments trying to fix something that was not broken..Justa pet peave, I feel better now...:-) Regards, Fred -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ross G.H.
