Marg: This is an article I wrote several years ago on some basic usage of the Advanced Filtering: http://www.ancquest.com/t_t6.htm This was written about the time we gave the code to the LDS Church for use in PAF -- so even though this article mentions Ancestral Quest, the Advanced Filtering works the same in PAF. Maybe the third time is the charm, as they say. This is actually my report on the conversion of PDF files to other formats. This time I am just replying without changing the Subject line, in case that was the problem. Zamzar.com WAS able to convert the two PDF files to Word format. One of the PDF files was a 24 page Modified Register Report and the other was a full page graphic file. It took Zamzar about an hour. The link that they emailed to me didn't work, but they also directed me to their website, where there was a download link to a zip archive containing my converted files. Clicking this link downloaded my files to my computer. The files looked perfect in Word. There was heavy use of text boxes, which is excellent for retaining the original formatting, but can be awkward to edit. (PAF probably makes heavier use of text boxes.) I was pleased to get my converted files back in a reasonable time and that the service was free. So consider this (and similar services) when you need to convert a PDF to text. Bill Buchanan
Marg, Like most things it gets easier with practice. For example, if you wanted to search for everyone in your database that was connected to Michigan, you could click Search > Advanced Focus Filter > Define > Any Place > > Full Place > Contains > Michigan > OK > Show Results Only > OK To search your Notes for all references to the word "census", you could click Search > Advanced Focus Filter > Define > Notes > > Contains > census > OK > Show Results Only > OK Using "Show Results Only" means that only individuals matching the filter set will be shown in the "Find Individual" screen, making it easy to examine them. You remove the check mark from "Show Results Only" in order to see everyone in the database instead of just the selected set. (You click Clear to clear the filter set. Never click Delete unless you want to permanently remove the selected records from your database.) If you have accidentally imported a gedcom file, one way to get rid of the new records is to select the range of new RINs and Delete these records, (after making a backup with a new name of course). This can be done with an advanced Focus Filter. So it is a powerful and somewhat dangerous tool. I find it very useful! I may be jumping the gun a bit here, but so far, all versions of Windows have come with a 'Compatibility Wizard' (just type that into Help to find it) which allows you to run any software as if it were in another (earlier) operating system. My son has several games which will only run under Windows 95, but his machine runs Windows XP. This compatibility wizard allows those games to run under Windows XP. I am assuming therefore that the next version of Windows after Vista will also have this wizard, so the use of PAF will not die after Vista. Another Possibility is that the View in WORD needs to be Set to Print Layout to properly show RTF format. I am considering trying out Legacy after using PAF ever since Version2 (possibly even Version 1). I have one major concern about Legacy: In PAF 5 there is a feature called Advanced Focus Filter that I find very confusing. In PAF 2, doing a search was VERY SIMPLE. I could type SEVY in the surname field; type KANSAS in the State field, hit some Function Key, and it would give me every SEVY born in Kansas. I could also do more complex searches just as easily. How are such searches done in the Basic Legacy? Are searches in the Advanced Legacy done any differently? I have another question. For those who have had both the Basic and the Full Featured Legacy, what are the three most important features that the full featured program has over the free program. I'm not a cheapskate, but when I looked over the features on the Legacy web site, the advanced features didn't seem all that important to me. Tom Sevy in Taylorsville, Utah PS: As I was writing this I got a response to an inquiry which I sent to Legacy last night. This is VERY satisfactory in my opinion. I am also generally pleased to see that they will respond quickly to questions. The person at Legacy gave me a good answer, but I'm still interested to hear what "users" think. Although he responded to my questions, his main suggestion was that I download the FREE version and try it out. Sounds reasonable to me.
Donna, There is a chance that RTF files are associated with Windows Wordpad instead of Word 2003. Wordpad is not able to interpret the advanced formatting and you see garbage. If you exit Wordpad without editing or saving the RTF file, and then open the RTF file from Word's File menu, the problem will probably disappear. If that is what is happening, you should be able to have the files open in Word by associating Word with RTF files. To do this, go to the folder where an RTF file is located, right-click on the file's icon > Open With > Choose Program > check mark "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" > MS Word > OK Let us know if this solves the problem. The little paragraph symbol in Word is called the show/hide feature. Click on the same symbol button on your toolbar to make the symbol disappear. Bill I did that already. What happens is that it opens in Word but I have like little Paragraphs Symbols beside each line. You can read what is there but it is not in the FGR Form with the lines and boxes like it is suppose to be. Maybe I have Word not formatted right or something.??? I have that paragraph symbol that I cannot get rid of. Need some input on opening my PAF5 FGR in the RTF. I recently purchased a new computer which has Word 2003 in it. I have just noticed when I try to Print to File and Open a Family Group Record in Rich Text Formula that it will not open correctly with all of the Lines and Boxes like it is suppose to do. In my old Version of Word 97 Had no problem with the FGR showing like it is suppose to ... I also have had to re-install my PAF5 program on the new computer. Can I have some input as what has happened. Thanks for your Help and Input. Donna
Yes, thanks, Gary. Good morning. I ahve been using PAF for ever and really like it. the list I belong to was sent the following "Whoah there! Be careful about PAF. Judging by what I've been reading in various blogs, the LDS will let PAF die a natural death once they roll out the new version of FamilySearch. " So I am wondering what is to happen to my very relaible PAF. And waht does that mean? Would be grateful for advice. AncestralQuest is the windows version of PAF's big brother. LegacyFamily Tree is free. Which of the dozen or so PC-based programs out there you'd prefer is kinda like which which Ice cream or car is best -- no accounting for tastes (g) ... some people are perfectly happy with vanilla icecream or a VW; others want Rocky Road or a Corvette. To clarify, the basic Legacy program is free and is a good solid program, but does not have all the features that the paid Legacy Deluxe version has. When a software program comes in more than one "flavor" and one want to use the free version, it is good to research the differences to be sure you understand the limitations. The free versions work for a lot of people, and are also great for testing even if you think you might want to upgrade to the paid version later. Marg: The Church is providing a way for commercial vendors to let you 'tie' your PAF data to the new FamilySearch. Ancestral Quest will let you keep using PAF as long as you want -- at least for several years -- and if you also want to connect your PAF data to new FamilySearch, AQ can act as the bridge between PAF and NFS. If you really like PAF, no reason to not continue using it.
