Can anyone suggest where I might purchase a copy of The History of Erie County or Nelson's Biographical Dictionary? According to Amazon.com, these are both out of print. Thanks (and Happy New Millennium)!! Linda
Linda Emerson asked about a source for Erie County Histories. One source is the Erie Book Store at 137 East 13th Street 16503, (814) 480-5671 or 5674. This is the old Lovell Manufacturing Building that has been nicely renovated into office and living spaces. I bought my copy of Nelson's there. They tend to get the used books in and turned over fairly rapidly. I don't know what arrangements they might make for non-store purchases. An online source is http://www.addall.com/Used/ , when you get to this search engine type History of Erie County, Pennsylvania in the KEYWORD section and you will get a listing of about 30 or so titles. There is some included which are more modern, and you can do various keyword searches to do other titles. I did note that Bates, Nelson, Sanford, Miller and Reed were all listed as available. I have a copy of Sanford 1896 and although it tends to be less expensive, in my opinion it does not contain much, other than a lot of rambling stories. I am not familiar with her earlier edition but I think the later edition just added a supplement with rambling stories in no particular order. I understand Miller and Reed (I believe Reed was done about 1925) are also quite good and in multiple volumes although I have not had a chance to look through them, only to glance at volume one only of them in the Erie Book Store. We have a Bibliography section on the site that has not yet been developed. I will attempt to gather the names of the various histories and build a page for that site. If anyone has copies of any histories and would like to provide me a short review (I don't need Nelson as I have that), I would appreciate it and I will (unless asked not to) post the review to the Bibliography page.
