    1. [PAERIE] Searching for Heritage Quest Online
    2. Two ways to investigate if libraries in the are have Heritage Quest Online are by internet and by phone. You can look on each library's webpage to see if they have it, or you can call the libraries and ask. In a preliminary looking at the Erie county libary, I see they are tied to other county libaries. This may make Heritage Quest Online prohibitively expensive as they may have to buy for the entire network. For example in the Pittsburgh area I am told the Carnegie Library system would have to buy HQO in order for it to appear on their common network. However my local (smaller, independent) Library was able to purchase HQO and offer it to their patrons. Take a look at http://www.einetwork.net/ein/northland/ and click on "Online Reference Desk." You will readily see the link to HQO. When searching other library websites you will probably find it placed in a similar place and not on the home page, but on a sub-page, so drill down when looking for it. By the way the above library also has Ancestry.com but it is under the link "Online Reference Center" and then under "Gale Group." Certainly not real apparent! So if you are in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh, you can drop in and use both HQO and Ancestry for free at Northland Public Library which is housed currently in Northway Mall on McKnight Road. Or for $35 you can join Godfrey Libary http://www.godfrey.org/ and not only get HQO at home, but also some newspapers online such as the New York Times Historical Collection (1851-2001), Los Angeles Times and Washington Post. Why care about NYTimes? It will have listings of the ships as they came into NY harbor and what weather they encountered and if there were any prominent people onboard. Surely great background info for your immigrant who landed at Ellis Island or Castle Garden. The NYTimes is everyword searchable, as I recall. Anyone have any experience with it?
