Most of the mailing lists to which I subscribe are set up so that when I click "reply" my post is automatically sent to the entire list, not just to the individual who wrote the message to which I am replying. I have no idea why this list is set up differently. Sometimes I have sent my messages to individuals instead of the group by accident. If I've done that you you... I'm sorry, it's hard for me to remember that this one list is different from all the others. Cheryl (Cheryl Trapp Boyd)
No this list IS NOT SET UP DIFFERENT! (Cheryl, I am NOT personally attacking you). First of all, Mike or I couldn't change it if we wanted to because we do not control this mail list. This mail list is "owned" by Jeff LaMarca who continues to be the administrator. Second, SOME mail lists are set to have replies go back to the mail list, but most of the ones I subscribe to do not. I subscribe to about 8 county/state mail lists and about ten surname lists, and only one county/state list (Ct-River-Valley) and one surname list (don't recall off hand which one) go back to the list. The three counties surrounding us (I didn't check Warren), and the other lists go only to the sender of the message, unless you hit the Reply All button. Several people on this list have mentioned that most lists they subscribe to DO reply to the list. Obviously we must subscribe to different sets of maillists. My experience with two very large lists (as a subscriber and observer) is that it doesn't matter which way the administrator has set the list to work, people need to LOOK at the address in the To box before hitting the send button. Multiple times I have seen people on the CRV list apologize for sending a private message to the list, and multiple times I have seen "Thank you", "Your Welcome", "Me too" and other types of messages that should not have gone to the list, but only to a specific individual. The only advantage in my mind to having a reply go back to the entire list is that everyone knows that a question has been answered. But far too many times it turns into a personal chat session that may or may not be of interest to everyone. On the other hand, Cheryl has pointed out that she has experienced just the opposite of having replied thinking that everyone on the list was getting a message, and not just an individual. Bottom line - you must look at your To line before you hit the send button.
