    1. [PAERIE] Different Group descriptions?
    2. Does anyone know what these groups stand for? I have an ancestor that was a member of the G. A. R., of the K. of H., and of the Patrons of Husbandry.

R. stands for Grand Army of the Republic, an organization for Union veterans of the Civil War. I believe K. of H. stands for Knights of Honor. There is some discussion of these "secret societies" in Part III, Chapter V of Bates' 1884 "History of Erie Co., PA < http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/bates/bates3V.htm>. Other than this, I don't really know much about these organizations. Perhaps a search of the internet would turn up more about their history and function. Three or four years ago I searched for info about the Knights of Pythias society and found a site that had quite a lot about its history, but the URL I have for it is no longer valid. Hope this helps a little bit. Hopefully someone else has more info about these societies. Gaylene Kerr Banister Houston, TX [email protected] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~banister/index.html

    3. Hi, G. A. R. stands for Grand Army of the Republic. It was an organization for veterans of the North in the Civil War.
