Dear list, Please forgive the length of this query- I don't know how to explain my problem without giving a fair bit of detail! I am seeking the ancestry of my husband's great great grandmother,Sarah HAZEN CAMPBELL, born, according to her death certificate, in 1829 in ERIE COUNTY PA to Silas and Emily HAZEN. The only Silas and Emily pair I have been able to find in that area and that time period are Silas and Emily HAZEN, residents of MINA, NY. According to "The Hazen Family in America" Emily's maiden name was POPE and she was from ERIE COUNTY PA. They had three children, John,Harriet, and Sally b. 1824. I think there is substantial evidence that this Sally was our Sarah despite the birth year being wrong- I know those are often innacurately recorded. 1) Our Sarah was born Erie County PA, where this Emily was said to be from 2) Our Sarah named her children John and Harriet, presumably after her siblings 3) John, Harriet, and Sarah all moved to the small town of LIND WI sometime between 1850-1860 4) Emily died as a young mother ca. 1831, easily allowing for a birth year for Sarah of 1829 5) Less conclusive but still a possible factor is that Sarah's descendants show a strong family pattern of the women dying young and this Emily fits that pattern. Now,here is the problem: Who was this Emily HAZEN? According to "The Hazen Family in America" her children were sent to live with their grandparents at the time of their mother's death and later moved "out west." (Wisconsin?) Since the Hazen book did not mention them living with the Hazen grandparents I presume they meant the maternal grandparents, presumably POPES. I then looked in the book "Pioneer Popes II" but there were no Emilys listed in the right time frame. However, of great interest was the mention of Nathaniel and Ida MATTOCKS POPE who took in to raise some HAZEN children including John and Harriet, said to be the children of her sister. According to the 1850 census Harriet HAZEN was living with Nathaniel and Ida and a Sarah HAZEN the right age to be our Sarah was living nearby as a single, but close enough to be on the next page of the census. They all lived in ERIE COUNTY PA. It seems highly unlikely that there would be two sets of HAZEN children named John and Harriet in the same place at the same time, both living with Pope relatives. So I presume these were the children of Silas and Emily Hazen. Further evidence is that Nathaniel and Ida POPE moved to the same little WISCONSIN town, LIND, where our Sarah lived as a young woman.John and Harriet also moved there and he and possibly she are buried in the same area as the POPES in the LIND cemetery. But, who were Emily's parents? The Hazen book says the children went to live with their grandparents, but Nathaniel and Ida were too young to be Emily's parents. The POPE book says they were the children of Ida MATTOCKS POPE'S sister. But, if that were the case then Emily's maiden name would have been MATTOCKS and not POPE. But is it possible someone said "Oh, she was Ida POPE'S sister- and mistakingly gave her maiden name as POPE and not MATTOCKS? The other possibility is that Emily was actually Nathaniel POPE'S sister. However the POPE book lists all of the children of that family as taken from school records and an Emily is not listed. So, if anyone has any information/ideas as to the ancestry of Emily HAZEN I would appreciate your help ever so much.
