In case the online stuff doesn't give you what you are looking for -- You can request a copy of his service records from General Reference Branch (NNRG-P), National Archives and Records Administration, 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20408. They will probably send you a form to fill out and submit. They require the following minimum information: Complete name (including middle, if you know it); state from which he served; war in which he served; whether Union or Confederate; and whether Army, Navy, or Marine Corps. Take a chance with Army and see if they can turn up something. The Bates histories have extensive lists of soldiers by regiment and company (History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865, Bates [Samuel?] 1870, several volumes. I'm sure all historical and genealogical libraries are familiar with these. Janet - Delaware
