In a message dated 5/6/03 3:05:38 AM, PAERIE-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << Date: Mon, 5 May 2003 18:58:41 -0400 From: "Anne Lurie" <alurie@nc.rr.com> Subject: Re: [PAERIE] Re: Erie County Courthouse site Chuck, I just used the http://www.eriepa.us/Assessment/Search.aspx website, and it seems to be working. OTOH, I got a shock when I checked out Wilson Drive (in Fairview) where I grew up -- I was barely able to recognize my dad's house at 7566 Wilson Dr. (as I recall; it had no street name or number when I lived there), but the orientation of the doors, Lake Erie in the background, and the "nice little hemlock" next to the path from the garage confirmed the ID for me. Neighboring houses 7578 & 7598 are recognizable to me also -- although the houses were always good-sized, my dad's house has had some major renovation done, not surprising considering that "houses can be changed, but no one can manufacture more desirable property" (in this case, overlooking Lake Erie). Anne Lurie Raleigh, NC >> Hello Anne, Thanks for the input on the Erie County Assessment online database. I was wrong, the search function does work after all. My problem was I did not have the right address for our family homestead at 965 West Arlington Road. After more than an hour bumping around and testing the search function with your address and that of some friends in Erie, I discovered several things. 1. If you put in the wrong data, you may not get any results 2. If you leave out the house numbers, you will get a listing of ALL of the assessment records for the entire street. 3. OBY is an abbreviation for Out Buildings in the Yard. In the end, I did find the information on the house. It was listed as but it as mislisted as >>959<< West Arlington Road and not >>965<< West Arlington Road. No wonder I could not find it and thought the database was broken. Unfortunately, there is no convenient way to report any errors to the database manager. I also found the fair market assessed value to be 25% lower than what the house sold for eight years earlier. The house was not sold at an above market value and the house and neighborhood is well kept. This data, like all genealogical data, should pass the common sense test. This one does not. One of the interesting things I discovered was the listing for the Grubb-Reed cemetery across the street from 965 West Arlington Road. (http://www.eriepa.us/Assessment/Results.aspx?Card=&ParcelID=33101453000400&Se ction=Photos) It is literally the front yard of the house behind it. It totals 0.0551 acres, or 2400 square feet. The address is distinguished from the house by the use of "West" in the street address. The cemetery and house have the same number in this database. Other information on the obscure Grubb-Reed cemetery can be found on my Web site at http://www.Bliley.net/family/misc/Grubb-Reed_Cemetery/. This is a perfect example of why to double-check your data for most anything and not to give up. I trust the paper version of the data for this property is correct. :-) Thanks Anne for the help and redirection. Everyone can now relax and return to their personal genealogical work. ;-) Best regards, Chuck Bliley www.Bliley.net
Chuck, I just used the http://www.eriepa.us/Assessment/Search.aspx website, and it seems to be working. As a follow-up to my previous mailing, I thought I would re-post some of the names found in the St. John's Catholic Church baptism register Dec 1869 - Dec 1908. The following surnames are of the baptized child (some cases adult) only, and does not include the maiden names or sponsors' names. If you think your family may be shown here, or may be among the ones not shown, I will be more than happy to look it up for you. Barb is right, all three churches were/are the Erie city Catholic churches of predominantly German congregation. St Mary's and St Joseph's were the earliest, 1833, 1853 respectively. Offhand the German Catholic Churches in Erie were St. Joseph's, St. John's and I think St. Mary's. All are still in existence. Barb
Michelle, The Courthouse in Erie has the Naturalization Records for Erie County. They will do a lookup for you for a fee. The library also has a book with the index of names of immigrants that were naturalized in Erie County. If you are in Erie, you can go there, look up the name and information, and then go to the Courthouse with that information, and they will charge you only for the copy. Barb
In an earlier post it mentioned that Erie was heavily Catholic. I had German Catholic ancestors there in the late mid to late 1800's. What was or were the names of the predominately German Catholic churches in the area? Cheryl FREES WESTFALL tedrickw@cox.net
Michelle: You might try writing to: St. Patrick's Church 130 E. 4th St. Erie, PA 16507 Immigrants to Erie were in a large part Catholic, and each ethnic group set up it's own Church (German, Irish, Italian, ...) I know St. Patrick's was the church set up by the Irish population --and was in existence at that time. Does anyone know where someone living in Erie, PA would have had to gone to be naturalized in the 1860's? They were born in Ireland, but traveled to the U.S. through Canada. Searching for Johanna ALLEN b. 1859 in Canada, her mother, Catherine b. 1827 in Ireland. Do not have the father's first name. I would appreciate any history about Irish settlement in Erie in the 1860's and later. Michelle
Hello to all Erie Co (PA) researchers, Just to let all of you know that the Erie County government website has finally been revised to a much more user friendly website. I will be updating our Erie Co Genealogy site to link to the new pages, but if one goes to http://www.eriepa.us/default.aspx?id=rw you should see that there is again a direct link to Genealogical Information posted by the Clerk of Courts - Register of Wills office. My clan has roots in Erie County (specifically, in McKean and Fairview Twps) and would like to hold a reunion within, say, 50 miles of that area (the closer the better) in 2005. We need accommodations for 70-90 people, a meeting room that will accommodate them, a child care room, and meal service. Recreation opportunities for children and youth a big plus. Any suggestions? To avoid cluttering the list, you may send them directly to me ( mailto:pkmorse@speedfactory.net ). Thanks, Ken
Our Harrison Family lived most of the 1800s at the NE corner of Fry and Van Camp Roads in McKean, Pa. This is just north of the old Harrison School, the land being donated for school use by our family. Does anyone know who currently lives in the old house on the NE corner of Fry and Van Camp? I would like contact them to find out if that house is the same structure that was standing in 1900 and if they know of any history about the house. Would also be interested in sharing information with other Harrisons, Staffords, or McArdles that may still be in the area. Also interested in any information about the Thomas and/or Daniel Harrison Dairy in McKean, 1800s. Debbie McArdle
I received this from a friend (Iris Jones) who is part of the CSGA Legislative watch. This is something we all need to take action on. It is FEDERAL and will affect all of us, no matter where we research! Janice Ramsey Lear FEDERAL LEGISLATION - A CALL TO ACTION At the federal level there are two bills on privacy and the use of Social Security Numbers working their way through the system. They are call the Social Security Misuse Prevention Act. Granted, the misuse of Social Security Numbers has gone on much too long, but as the bills are worded it could spell the end of the Social Security Death Indexes. Even if they were to exempt the present Death Indexes, no further indexes could be developed. The Utah Genealogical Society has worked to get the authors to amend the bill to protect the continued availability of the death indexes, but so far there have been no amendments. It is time for the genealogy community to let Washington know how we feel. We want people's privacy protected but we do not want to see this very important historical research tool lost forever. It is important to thousands of genealogists and family health historians. We ask that make the following amendments in S228 and HR637: 1. Under Sec. 3 (a)(1)(a) DEFINITIONS, add the following definition: "SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER - The term 'social security number' refers to the social security number of a living individual." 2. Under Sec. 4 (a)(1)(e)(2) LIST OF PAPER AND OTHER NONELECTRONIC RECORDS, delete "(D) death certificates." You can contact the authors: S228 Senator Dianne Feinstein 331 Hart Senate Office Bldg.
