Hi Lister Friends, Still researching names of STEVENS & WASSEL Great-Grandparents came from Russia in the late 1800's, have made trips to the LDS Library to no avail. My Grandfather on mother's side was MICHAEL STEVENS, and I am sure he changed his surname, can not find GGrandfather in any census. But think his first name was FRED or FEDORA? MICHAEL STEVENS killed in 1908 Marianna Mine Blast, Grandmother's name was MARY WILLIAMS-STEVENS-WASSEL.. She married LEE (LAWRENCE) WASSEL and had 3 more sons, HARRY, WILLIAM & LAWRENCE & daughter ALEXANDRA (ALICE) DAVIS-JENNETTE who lived in Vestaburg (Vesta 5) and moved to Erie, Pa. in her later years, she lived in Palmbrook, Erie, Pa. Buried from the Russian Church, I think perhaps St. John's? Lived in Vestaburg, Marianna, Cokeburg & Vesta 5, Pennsylvania. Looking for a break through some day, getting older and the wall still stands strong ! Thanks~~~~ LORI~~IN ARIZONA :)
Jackie, Let's don't give up yet. Try Conrad "Sneider" in Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA, 1900, ED 116, sheet 13. This Conrad is shown as born Sep 1836 in Germany (age given as 68), came to US in 1850, married 40 years in 1900; his wife Mary is shown as born June 1842 in Germany; their daughter Annie is shown as born Jun 1883 in PA. Jackie, A quick check of Erie county 1900 shows a Conrad "Snyder" age 45, with wife Sophia age 40, but no children. They were living in the vicinity of 12th and Plum in the Erie 3rd Ward, page 153. Their actual address was 828 12th Street. I live in Idaho, so don't know where this is in Erie, PA. Hello List, August, being a traditional vacation month, finds that I will not have a theme for the Erie Co (PA) Genealogy website. As I always do, I have many, many submissions, some dating back a year or more, that I will be working on. Of course, anyone who does come across pictures, information, listings, transcriptions of old documents, or anything else that is related to genealogy in Erie County, I always welcome them. Believe it or not, sometimes new submissions are so good, that I post them right away. Please visit the website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie and take a look at some of the 593 "pages" that have been posted as of August 1st, early AM. We have lost contact with our previous coordinator for Wayne Township, so I am looking for a coordinator for that township, and for tiny Lawrence Park Twp which has never had a coordinator. Several other township coordinators have remained, but have indicated that they really do not have sufficient time to address the needs of their township. If anyone on this list is interested in "having your name in print" and being a township coordinator, please contact me privately, with your "township of expertise", and we will see what we can work out. Our monthly theme will return in September with our annual favorite for the month, Schools. I am particularly interested in late 1800s - early 1900s school souvenir booklets or sheetlets, or any class photos prior to about 1940. I am still working on some of my cemetery theme updates, but do want everyone to know that I have been spending a lot of computer time at my second favorite site - Find-A-Grave. I now have over 6300 pictures posted, mostly of cemetery gravestones in Erie County. Probably the three cemeteries with the most pictures are Laurel Hill, Erie Cemetery and the Soldiers & Sailors Home. Find-A-Grave has just gone through a major upgrade, and there are some upgrade bugs still being worked on, but I do intend to update my Findagrave Index page with new numbers and additional cemeteries. That's all for now. Bill Klauk Volunteer County Coordinator, Erie Co (PA) Genealogy, USGenWeb/PAGenWeb project Rootsweb Message Board Administrator, Erie Co (PA)
Hello Listers ....... I wonder if anyone knows if there is an index available for the 1900 census for Erie? Could someone with access to such do a lookup for CONRAD SCHNEIDER and tell me which ED he is in? I have access to the census images but have had no luck determining the ED for 18th and Cranberry Streets .... can someone more familiar with Erie streets tell me what ED that would be in 1900? Appreciate any help you can lend ....... Jackie Researching Schneider, Wolf and Ford in Erie
Dear list, Please forgive the length of this query- I don't know how to explain my problem without giving a fair bit of detail! I am seeking the ancestry of my husband's great great grandmother,Sarah HAZEN CAMPBELL, born, according to her death certificate, in 1829 in ERIE COUNTY PA to Silas and Emily HAZEN. The only Silas and Emily pair I have been able to find in that area and that time period are Silas and Emily HAZEN, residents of MINA, NY. According to "The Hazen Family in America" Emily's maiden name was POPE and she was from ERIE COUNTY PA. They had three children, John,Harriet, and Sally b. 1824. I think there is substantial evidence that this Sally was our Sarah despite the birth year being wrong- I know those are often innacurately recorded. 1) Our Sarah was born Erie County PA, where this Emily was said to be from 2) Our Sarah named her children John and Harriet, presumably after her siblings 3) John, Harriet, and Sarah all moved to the small town of LIND WI sometime between 1850-1860 4) Emily died as a young mother ca. 1831, easily allowing for a birth year for Sarah of 1829 5) Less conclusive but still a possible factor is that Sarah's descendants show a strong family pattern of the women dying young and this Emily fits that pattern. Now,here is the problem: Who was this Emily HAZEN? According to "The Hazen Family in America" her children were sent to live with their grandparents at the time of their mother's death and later moved "out west." (Wisconsin?) Since the Hazen book did not mention them living with the Hazen grandparents I presume they meant the maternal grandparents, presumably POPES. I then looked in the book "Pioneer Popes II" but there were no Emilys listed in the right time frame. However, of great interest was the mention of Nathaniel and Ida MATTOCKS POPE who took in to raise some HAZEN children including John and Harriet, said to be the children of her sister. According to the 1850 census Harriet HAZEN was living with Nathaniel and Ida and a Sarah HAZEN the right age to be our Sarah was living nearby as a single, but close enough to be on the next page of the census. They all lived in ERIE COUNTY PA. It seems highly unlikely that there would be two sets of HAZEN children named John and Harriet in the same place at the same time, both living with Pope relatives. So I presume these were the children of Silas and Emily Hazen. Further evidence is that Nathaniel and Ida POPE moved to the same little WISCONSIN town, LIND, where our Sarah lived as a young woman.John and Harriet also moved there and he and possibly she are buried in the same area as the POPES in the LIND cemetery. But, who were Emily's parents? The Hazen book says the children went to live with their grandparents, but Nathaniel and Ida were too young to be Emily's parents. The POPE book says they were the children of Ida MATTOCKS POPE'S sister. But, if that were the case then Emily's maiden name would have been MATTOCKS and not POPE. But is it possible someone said "Oh, she was Ida POPE'S sister- and mistakingly gave her maiden name as POPE and not MATTOCKS? The other possibility is that Emily was actually Nathaniel POPE'S sister. However the POPE book lists all of the children of that family as taken from school records and an Emily is not listed. So, if anyone has any information/ideas as to the ancestry of Emily HAZEN I would appreciate your help ever so much. Hello. Would anyone have any information on the Fritts or Black families of Venango and Concord Townships? They are buried at the Concord Cemetery: Christian, b. 1817, d. 1891. Jane (or Emily Jane), b. 1821, d. 1904. Thank you!! Jill
To all who responded to my request for Lundys Lane, a big thank you. It does seem that there were two. One was in the county, and one a street name in the city of Erie . Mary
Thank you for your help Andy. I have a hand typed "copy" of a death notice supposedly from a Conneaut, Ohio newspaper (no name given) but I have no idea if this is accurate information. I realize that some things in obituaries may have been exaggerated or even invented in those days. It says : a.. Francis Lorell Hoskins lived at 377 Main St. Conneaut, Ohio. Son of William Lorell Hoskins and Nancy Trimmer, members of the pioneer families in the Connecticut Western Reserve. b.. He was born 7/2/1852 and buried in Pierpont. He died circa 1932. c.. m. Louise Thompson d.. m Margaret B. Sherrod-1900- son-F. Lorell Hoskins of Sandusky,OH- granddaughter Charlotte Lorell Hoskins b. Feb. 16, circa 1932. e.. That he was a Pennsylvania legislator a trustee of Edinboro State College, builder and part owner of Northwestern Pennsylvania Railroad Co and a friend and associate of President McKinley. My ggrandmother-Hattie Victoria Sherrod Mooney's death notice (b 5/ 3/1871 d. 7/13/1929 -hand typed also) states that she is the ggg-granddaughter of General Joseph Warren. I cannot find any connection there. This is part of the reason I want to find information on her mother Abigail Bartlett's parents. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have just come across a slide that my parents had taken of a covered bridge near Albion. The name on the bridge shows Stines and Wingate Clothing. Is this bridge still existing and exactly where would it be? I plan to be in Albion next month for the Smock-Hall reunion and if the bridge is still existing I would like to see it. Thank you very much. Betty Macdonald

This confused me because I knew about the village of Lundy's Lane/Wellsburg and also knew it was in the western part of the county, not near enough to the City of Erie to be enumerated as part of the city. Tonight I looked at the 1860 census images online at Ancestry.com. The census pages for the City of Erie are broken down into two groups on the Ancestry site and all the various townships are listed separately by township. For the City of Erie, the two groups are labeled Erie City (121 pages) and Erie East Ward (116 pages). When I looked at the actual pages in the two groupings, at the top of each page in the Erie East Ward group it says "City of Erie" and "Post Office: Erie" while the pages in the Erie City group say "City of Erie" and "Post Office: Lundys Lane." So . . . it appears the Lundys Lane post office district possibly covered all of the west side of the city of Erie in 1860. I believe the naming of the Lundy's Lane Post Office district in the City of Erie is coincidental to the naming of the community of Lundy's Lane in Elk Township. Hello. Would someone give me directions to Beaver Dam Cemetery from Erie, PA? Thank you!! Jill
Hi, I live out here, in the county. Cranesville and Albion are southeast of Ashtabula, and are at least 7-10 miles south of the lake. Here is a url http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/townships/ElkCreek.htm Wellsboro ( Lundy's Lane) is noted here. The Township was named for the many herds of elk that once roamed the small creeks in the area. Several small villages developed in this rural area and still exist today that include: Pageville, Pont, Ivarea, Wellsburg / Lundys Lane, Cranesville, and Lavery. Our Township has been in different stages of development for over 200 years. I live about six miles from this area, if there is anything that I can do to help let me know Rick ----- Original Message ----- From: "Genie" <genielists@yahoo.com> To: <> Sent: Friday, July 18, 2003 2:26 PM Subject: Re: [PAERIE] Lundys Lane > It still is - in the COUNTY of Erie <smile>. > It's a few miles NE of Ashtabula, OH, sort of > between Cranesville and Albion, near the lake. > I'm sure you can find it on Mapquest.com or other > online map services.
