    1. [PAERIE] 1850 census
    2. Hi Could anyone look up Levi Turner on the 1850 Census for Erie, PA? He would be about 18-20 years old. I don't have that census info in my library. Levi's first child was born in 1853 in PA, and his wife is from PA. He is there in Springfield Twp., Erie Co. on the 1870-80 census as well. He is in Lorain Co., Ohio in 1860. I did check the 1850 census in Ohio for him, but I could not find him. Thanks in advance--Betty

    3. This is very strange. I can find no Graham Slitor or Sliter anywhere in the US census indexes in 1860 or 1870 (or 1910, for that matter). Could the spelling you have of his name be a simplification - from something more Germanic, perhaps? Or did he die or go West (to a territory) before 1860? The former would make him a bit too young to become anyone's ancestor, but the latter might explain his absence from the earlier censuses. Oh, and have you checked Civil War records for him? Birth records definitely do not go back to 1837, but church records or posted Bible records might possibly list him (of you're lucky). If someone has an 1850 census index, they might be able to find him with his parents that year. --- BELINDA WINSTEAD <testaments2@msn.com> wrote: > Hi I am new to your list. 1. [PAERIE] Patrick J. Ford/ 1900 census lookup
    2. Hello Researchers ........ Asking for help from another kind soul! Could someone with a Genealogy.com subscription check the 1900 census for my great-grandfather, PATRICK J. FORD, who should be somewhere in Erie. He would be about 33 to 35 years old and living with his wife, Mary (who would be about 26 years old) and three children named Henry or Hank, Louise or Lou, and Ellen. The kids would be about 5, 3 and 1 year old respectively. I really need the ED and page number for his entry if you find him. And I truly appreciate the help! Best wishes ........... Jackie

    3. jrhand@ncn.net has sent a private inquiry to me. If anyone can help her, please reply directly to her. Bill Klauk Erie Co (PA) Genealogy ----- Original Message ----- From: Ruth Hand To: ErieCoGenie@worldnet.att.net Sent: Friday, August 15, 2003 6:35 PM Subject: Question Dear Bill, I live in a small town, Emmetsburg, in northwest Iowa and have been doing research this past month for a PowerPoint presentation that my husband will use in his work as Foundation director for our local hospital. I am wondering if you might possibly be able to help me find information related to that for which I have been searching at great lengths. Please allow me to explain.. The first slides in this presentation are directed toward a history of our hospital, beginning with the first doctor in our county (called Palo Alto). I particularly wanted a photo of this man so I looked through articles in an old scrapbook at the hospital and discovered it was a Dr. J. H. Underwood who had settled in West Bend, IA (Palo Alto County) in 1863, after serving as an assistant surgeon in the cavalry under General Steel in Little Rock, AR during the Civil War (I do not know what this means in relation to which side he was serving for, the Union or the Confederacy). Further research in the genealogical room at our local library turned up cards on both Dr. Underwood and his wife, Maria. From them, I learned that his full name was James Hester Underwood, born in Erie County, PA., and that he died in 1880 at age 45 of "paralysis." There were no photos in the local paper of the time so that seemed to be the end of the trail. I have made many phone calls to other local historical societies and driven to several towns around, but we have been unable to locate any further information, let alone a picture of him. This leads to why I am contacting you. Previously, I had used a search engine on the Internet to look for the Underwood family, but over 46,000 entries came up. Today, I searched for an Erie County, PA site in hopes of finding any mention of the Underwood family with no way of knowing if they remained there or eventually moved to another city or area of the country. He would have been born in 1835 and perhaps trained as a medical doctor/surgeon or enlisted for service in the Civil War during the late 1850's or early 1860's. I did find and take a photo of his gravestone located in Riverside Cemetery a few miles west of the town of West Bend near the site of the original settlement. The library card did not mention his parents or any other siblings/family members, but it did mention that his wife was the daughter of pioneer settlers in West Bend Township of this county, and he worked part time as a farmer as well as medical doctor. They had four children, 2 sons and 2 daughters. I found library cards on the two sons showing that they both died young, one in 1893 of "creeping paralysis" and the other in 1898 of an un-named accident. One daughter was mentioned living in San Gabriel, CA, but there was no mention of what eventually happened to her and no reference whatever to the other daughter. The mother finally moved to Los Angeles in 1898, passing away in 1907 of acute bronchitis. In closing, I would like to know if you might have any further information about this man, particularly a picture of him from the war or his early 20's. If so, please let me hear from you. I would be most grateful for any time and help you could give me in this matter. Sincerely, Ruth E. Hand Emmetsburg, IA Ph. 712-852-4808 Email: jrhand@ncn.net

    3. They were still in Lorain Co. when the 1860 census was taken (June 13), with children Louisa, Floyd, Joe and Oscar N., plus a man named something like Orlando Covlerhaver(sp?), 25. They were in the 1870 census for Erie Co., PA with several more children. Do you have those? Was Martha possibly a Covlerhaver? (I doubt that's the right spelling, but it's as close as I can make it out. It could be Coolshaver, Cevlerhaver, etc.) --- Trippworks59@wmconnect.com wrote: > I am researching Levi and Martha Turner who are > listed on the 1880 Federal > Census as living in Springfield Twp., Erie Co. > He is 50 and she is 47. And they moved to 18th & Cranberry by Mary's death in Dec. 1901 cause her wake was at the house with address given in the death notice in the newspaper.<snip> Jackie, I don't know when the area of 18th & Cranberry was incorporated into the City of Erie, but it was originally in Mill Creek Township (back then the township was generally spelled as two words while today it is one word). In 1855 the western boundary of the City of Erie was Plum Street. The streets just west of Plum are Cascade, then Raspberry, then Cranberry. The southern boundary was Buffalo Road (now 18th Street). So even though 18th and Cranberry was in Mill Creek Township in 1855, it was very near the boundary line between the city and the township. Generally (there are exceptions) in the City of Erie named streets run north/south and numbered streets run east/west. Hope this helps a little bit. 3. Jackie, Genealogy.com has indexed 1900, 1910, and part of 1870. I like their indexes because you can "jump to" a surname. This puts the entire state for that year in alpha order by surname, then first name. Then you click "go to page" and the image comes up. Another click prepares the page for printing. Actually the printed image of the page with Conrad Sneider is quite good. He clearly said that he came to USA in 1850 and had been here 50 years. His naturalization papers are probably in Erie county. Gayle ----- Original Message ----- From: KJBUDELL@aol.com To: gdhix@cableone.net Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2003 8:55 PM Subject: Re: [PAERIE] 1900 census/Conrad Schneider Hello Gayle! It's him! I cannot thank you enough for finding Conrad Schneider in the 1900 census! I never would have looked at Millcreek Township going page by page becuase the family was always otherwise concentrated in the same city area. I'm anxious to find some time to investigate exactly where it is in relation to the city. Does Genealogy.com transcribe the information as well as provide the image? I checked the image on Ancestry and it's barely legible; just wondered if that's the condition of the original. For example, does it transcribe 1836 as his birth year? It doesn't correlate with his listed age as 68 (doesn't add up). He was born 6 Sept 1835 to the best of my knowledge (even has 1835 on his tombstone) and it seems to hold in the other census listings I've found. If he were 68 going on 69 in 1900, his birth year would be 1831. Mary was born in 1840 according to her tombstone, so that's a little off. But Annie was the only child left at home and her birthdate of 11 June 1883 matches the census information. Also, Conrad emigrated in 1852 according to his naturalization papers at the Erie Court House so this discrepancy requires some further investigation. For example, does he show up in the 1850 or 51 city directories? I wonder what prompted the move to Millcreek Township? And they moved to 18th & Cranberry by Mary's death in Dec. 1901 cause her wake was at the house with address given in the death notice in the newspaper. I guess new information always brings about a ton more questions!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU again for all your kindness! I do hope that your kindness is returned to you in the form of many blessings! Your persistence afforded me a major breakthrough in my research, and I'm truly grateful> Most Sincerely, Jackie
