    1. [PAERIE] Fisher - Brown Survivors?
    2. Dear List Members, I first posted my message here last May and haven't as yet reached my goal, so I'm trying again, as I do have additional information (see below). I am looking for descendants (if they exist) of my first cousin, HOWARD I. FISHER, who died on Christmas Day, 1944, when the ship on which he was sailing from England to France was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine the previous night (Christmas Eve). Howard was a U.S. Army private at the time and had been living prior to his army duty in Erie, PA. Details of the ship's sinking were apparently kept secret for many years, until a book was written about the event. Go to: www.historychannel.com/exhibits/leopoldville/states/pa.html to learn more about the tragedy (assuming it is still posted). Here is what I know about Howard to date: 1911, Dec. 04 - Howard born to Isaac H. Fisher and Sylvia Elisabeth (Wambach) Fisher in Irondequoit, Monroe County, NY 1914 - Isaac (Howard's father) dies from unknown causes. Burial in Irondequoit cemetery. 1923, Sept. 23 - Sylvia also dies, leaving Howard an orphan. She is buried with Isaac in Irondequoit cemetery. 1930 Erie County, Erie City, PA Census - Howard is living with the Homer STULL BROWN family at 925 East 25th Street. Also in the household were Homer's wife, Mary (Mae H.) and his adopted son, Richard, listed as 19 years of age. 1943 Erie City Directory - Howard I. Fisher and wife (Elsie) living at 507 East 5th Street and Howard is listed as being in the U. S. Army. 1944, Dec. 25 - Howard and numerous other soldiers drown in the sinking of the S. S. Leopoldville. His body was never recovered. 1956, March 29 - Homer Stull Brown dies at the Erie Veteran's Administration Hospital. He is listed as the father of Richard Brown of Rochester, NY, undoubtedly his adopted son. Sept. 1981 - (Rochester Democrat & Chronicle Newspaper Obit) Springwater, NY. Richard H. Brown, age 70, of Bald Hill Rd., formerly of E. Avon. Husband of the late Rebecca Gardner Brown. Survived by daughters, Nancy Brown of Fairview, PA, and Mrs. Donald (Pamela) Morey of Union City, PA; sons, Richard, Jr. and Robert, both of Harbor Creek, PA, and Ralph T. Barber of Erie; 15 grand children. I've looked up and called a number of people in the Erie area having the names listed above, but no luck, nor have I heard from the National Archives after sending them their form containing Howard's service number and requesting information. My goal is to locate any possible descendants of Howard Fisher and/or Richard Brown. Any assistance in this endeavor will be much appreciated! Thank you for reading this, Robert F. Wambach Ontario, Wayne County, NY

    1. [PAERIE] Thomas Peter Barton
    2. Donna Merrill
    3. DEAR LISTERS, Would love to hear from any descendants of this family!!! Thanks, Donna Merrill FAMILY OF THOMAS PETER BARTON and RHODA N. CALKINS by Donna Merrill dmerrill3@mindspring.com Thomas Peter BARTON, my oldest known ancestor was born 3 July 1805 in Dutchess Co., NY, died 7 Dec 1870 in Erie Co., PA. I have been unable to find out who Thomas's parents were but in 2002 my brother participated in the Barton Family Organization, Phase 2, DNA Project which linked us to the Roger Barton family of Westchester, NY. In the book "The Calkins Family Manuscript" by Mrs. Turney Sharps, it stated that Thomas was born in Dutchess Co., NY in 1805 and was also married there in 1826. Family bible records which came to light a few years ago from Vance MORTON, Steve CUMMINS and more recently, Rhea HANDLEY, state that Thomas was married 28 Apr 1825 in Oswego Co., NY to Rhoda N. CALKINS, b. 12 Sep 1809 in Coburg, Ontario, Canada, d. 29 Jul 1880 in Erie Co., PA. daughter of Salmon CALKINS and Eunice RICHARDSON. Both Thomas Peter and Rhoda N. Calkins BARTON were buried at Phillipsville Cemetery in Erie Co., PA. The dates on the headstone support their birth and death date! s. I also have obituaries for Thomas and Rhoda from the Erie Morning Dispatch, Erie Co., PA. Thomas and Rhoda are found listed on the 1830 Census of Jefferson Co., NY. Further research at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah has not revealed any paper trail for them in Jefferson or Oswego Co., NY. Rhoda had most of her family living in the Jefferson/Oswego County, NY area at that time. Thomas and Rhoda are next found listed on the 1840 and 1850 Census of Trenton Village, Oneida Co., NY where the remainder of their children were born. One child , Lewis King BARTON died there 3 Oct 1841. There are some deed records on Thomas in Oneida County. Thomas and Rhoda then migrated to Greene Twp., Erie Co., PA before 1860 and settled there. Many of Rhoda's siblings lived there then moved on to Michigan or Wisconsin. Listed below are the children of Thomas & Rhoda Calkins Barton. A) Lewis b. 19 Feb 1826 in Oswego Co., NY d. 26 Feb 1826. 1. [PAERIE] Lookup help-- Fire Departments.
    2. Hello, I am looking for information on two local fire departments. I would like to know when the Kearsarge Fire Dept. first was established and it's address. I would also like to know when the Lake Shore F.D. was established and address. This is a homework assignment for my daughter. She cannot call the fire department. A call to the Erie Co. library did not help, and I got a recording at the Historical Society. If anyone knows of where we could find this information, we would be most grateful. Thanks in advance. 1. [PAERIE] Further thoughts on Joab Stafford
    2. G. Stafford
    3. In doing some online searching, I've found that there is a Stafford burial plot in McKean Twp, and that in it are a Jonas Stafford, b. abt. 29 Jan 1774, d. 31 Jul 1852, and his second wife, Amy Slater. Jonas was also married to Alma Park (this is according to a couple of websites with no real substantial proof). At the Golden Cemetery, McKean Twp, there is also a John Stafford, b. abt. 10 Oct 1785, d. 22 Jan 1863, and his wife, Eleanor, b. abt. 24 Jan 1792, d. 24 Jul 1864. I'm wondering if either of these couples could be the parents of Joab Stafford? They seem to have been of parenting age at approximately the right times, and in the right place if Joab is from McKean Twp... I couldn't find anything to rule either couple either in or out. I'm probably barking up the wrong family trees. Geoff

    3. Could he be a descendant of this Joab Stafford? The book is on Heritage Quest. Ther are lots of Joabs and Jobs mentioned but I see no Chloe. Benedict, Henry Marvin, A contribution to the genealogy of the Stafford family in America : containing an account of Col. Joab Stafford, and a complete record of his descendents in the male lines. Albany N.Y.: J. Munsell, 1870, 29 pgs. ------------------------ A Joab Stafford is listed in McKean TWP., Erie Co., PA in the 1820 census, with lots of other Staffords on the same page _ Jonathan, Jonas?, Henry, Lemuel and one I can't quite make out - Horrin? or Warren? maybe. I suspect your Joab is son of one of these. But there were an awful lot of Joabs and Jobs around in New England and NY, esp. Here's one that looks a lot like yours, in 1870: STAFFORD JOB 58 M W NY VT BENNINGTON BENNINGTON 1870 with Chloe 55, Henry 32, Frank 22, and a farm laborer named Charles Russell 19, all b VT except Job. Note birthplaces are different from what you have and ages of Chloe and Henry a little off your birth dates. How firm is you info? Could there possibly have been two Joabs/Jobs md. to a Chloe and b about 1812? Or could two of them have gotten mixed up somewhere along the way? Probably not - the data is just not very accurate, especially in the census. See 1880: Census Place Bennington, Bennington, Vermont Job STAFFORD Self M Male W 69 NY Farmer NY NY Chloe STAFFORD Wife M Female W 65 MASS Keep House MASS MASS Now she's born Mass., for crying out loud! 3. Thanks for that info! I am positive Joab was born in PA, and Chloe was born in NY. They are listed on the 1850 census as living in Dryden, MI. Joab was a farmer, age 32, b. PA; Chloe a housewife, age 29, b. NY, and 8 year old Henry was listed as their son, b. PA. Henry and his wife, Lucinda are listed as living in Dryden, MI in the 1870 census along with their son, my great grandfather, Samuel Lucian Stafford; again Henry is shown to have been born in PA. Joab and Chloe are also documented in other places to be connected with Henry, listed as his parents on his tombstone, and they are also listed on his death certificate. Death dates match in both places, and his age at time of death was 30 years, 7 months, 15 days in both places. I know that there are a lot of Job Staffords, probably because Job Stafford was a famous revolutionary war figure, living in western MA (there's a monument to him near the MA/NY/VT borders). However, I'm almost certain that in 1842, at least, Joab and Chloe were living in PA, because Henry is listed as being born there in 1842. Geoff

    3. Aloha list: I'm the great-great-great-grandson of Joab and Chloe Stafford, and I'm trying to get some information about the family. Here's what I know: Joab Stafford was born in Pennsylvania abt. 1818. Chloe (maiden name unknown) was born in NY abt. 1821. Henry M. Stafford, their first child, was born in PA in 1842. The family moved to Dryden, MI between 1842 and 1850. Records I have found indicate that Henry was born in McKean, PA. I think that probably means McKean Twp, not McKean County, but I can't be sure of that. Any information you might have about Joab, Chloe or Henry would be greatly appreciated. Geoff Stafford

    3. Looks like James Turner went back to his father's home state in 1910. Check this: Ashtabula County, Ohio, ED 18, visit 107, James M. Turner, age 37, born PENN, wife Francis P., age 26, born PENN. Could he have been in Richland County, Montana in 1920 with wife Franky? Aside from many books written on the topic, this kind of information is available on the web and can be found by doing a search through www.Google.com. Put the following into the search box: Pennsylvania +"Vital Records" Also at www.Rootsweb.com under the USGenWeb project for Pennsylvania are links to various geographies which would describe what is available where. In the case of birth and death records, the Pennsylvania Vital Records department has an on-line form that you would fill out and submit to them. The rules have recently changed and only family members can request these records which are from 1906 to present. If you do not know the exact date they can do a 10 year search for you. Their site is http://www.dsf.health.state.pa.us/health/cwp/view.asp?a=168&q=229939 While the State of Pennsylvania handles the birth and death records from 1906 to present, the county records the marriage records from 1885 to present. So you should find out what county the couple filed their application in, and that is where the record is. This is not necessarily the same county in which they lived, or in which they got married. These are public records and you could write to the marriage records bureau to see if they will send you a copy of the applicaton and certificate (the application has the really great genealogical info including parents' names) and what the cost is. A lot of libraries have the census on-line now as a patron service. Working them can be another story. Be open to spelling variants and finding them in places you may not expect. Our expectations of what we think we should see sometimes blinds us to our ancestor's data even when we are staring at it in the face. I hope that you will pursue some of these avenues and find the thrill of the chase is even more exciting than finding them!
