    1. [PAERIE] Prohibiton Era in Erie County...
    2. Hello, I've been reading a little about the Prohibition Era on the internet, because I found out that "Lake Erie" was used to smuggle liquor from Canada to the USA and that rumrunners hung out on those islands drinking & gambling. My great-grandfather, Daniel Caughlin, lived in Erie County from at least 1900 to abt. 1923 when he was last seen. His lifestyle and reputation would have fit right in with the profile of a bootlegger. I'm still trying to find out about his death & have exhausted the usual routes. The timing of his disappearance, his reputation, and the smuggling activities that were taking place on Lake Erie has caused me to want to research this angle some more. Does anyone have information about the Prohibition Era in relation to citizens of Erie County (i.e. arrests, unsolved deaths, etc.)? Or does anyone know where I should look for this info? Thanks so much!! Sincerely, Stacey

    3. Have you asked the DAR for a free Patriot lookup on him? If they have him as a Patriot, then they should have membership applications that would probably provide spouse and some family background on him. To request a lookup, see their site at dar.org --- AncestorsSearchi@aol.com wrote: > I'm researching Rev War Veteran, Capt John > Battles, who applied for pension > in Erie Co PA. 3. Hello List: I am most sorry for the message sent in error to your list. The personal message sent to our Society member Ms. West somehow reached your list. The message directed to your list should have been as follows. ...................................................................................................... Hello Everyone: Those of you who are working on your lines back to your 1600s American Ancestors will find the1600s Ancestors Data Base to be of great help. My recent postings to the Data Base has taken it to over 26,500 Ancestors who have descendants living today. I have also added several National Societies who have proven many of these Ancestors. Also at this time a few new respected Reference works that contain thousands of sources including some of the early colonists who have Royal Blood lines. All the entries are coded to indicate to which reference work or which National Society has at least one of their proven lines. Several of the National Societies have over 20 different lines from a single Ancestor. When you enter the 1600s Ancestor Data Base be sure to look at the top of each data page for the link that takes you to the "Data Base Information Page" Here you will find the codes and references listed and how to use them. This is MUST reading to understand the Data Base. We are constantly updating the Data Base with additional Ancestors added as time permits. You will find the 1600s Ancestor Data Base at: http://www.firstfamilies.org/db/ Everyone has FREE access to all our web site and the reports contained there. 2. Ms. West, Did you send this to the list because you suspect it might be a scam? One can never be too careful about people asking for money over the Internet. If this is an attempt to advertise services, that would be in violation of what these lists are for. 2. Hello to both the Pittsburgh and Erie, PA lists. I was wondering if someone out there could tell me the names of the newspapers in both Pittsburgh and Erie in 1922? My gg-grandmother passed away on November 10, 1922 in Buffalo, NY and in that obit it states for Pittsburgh and Erie papers to copy. I'm hoping that these obits may offer more information on this elusive ancestor. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Her name was: Catherine R. 3. Why don't this website come up for me? While I cannot give you a direct lead to your information, you may find some leads by reviewing the pages of the Palmer Registry of Merchant Ships (<A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/mppraetorius/"> http://www.geocities.com/mppraetorius/</A>). This is not a searchable listing, but his work is extensive for this period and it often includes a photo or drawing of the ship. I found the ship that my ancestors sailed on from France in 1834 on this site with two photos of paintings. My ancestors were emigrating from Germany themselves. I never thought I would find this much information so easily anywhere. Of course, I had the name of the ship and nothing more. Good luck! Chuck Bliley Rochester, NY www.Bliley.net

    3. I am researching my ancestor John D. Miller. His original German name was most likely MULLER, which he changed to Miller when he arrived in US. John D. Miller born 10-9-1824 in Wurtemburg (Germany). John married Margaret Werner in Germany and they had one child there prior to coming over. Mary Elizabeth Miller b. 2-23-1850 Essen, Germany Once they arrived in Erie, Erie Co, PA they had 3 more children: 1. John D, Miller , Jr. b. 1854 Erie 2. Maggie Miller b. 1859 Erie 3. Katie Miller b. 1857 Erie JOhn D. Miller stated that he immigrated in 1854, and was later Naturalized. By 1880 census this family has settled in Lima, Allen Co, OH. I have never been able to find any records for this family in Erie, PA. I live overseas and can only use the internet as a resource. Does anyone have the 1860 Erie, PA census? If so is there a John D. Miller born in Wurtemburg listed? Are there any other researchers who have German immigrants who arrived in Erie in 1854? Have you had any luck with finding ship information? Where there ships coming from Bremen or Hamburg directly to Erie in 1854, or would they have stopped somewhere else first? Best regards, Lillian Kathleen Martin

    1. [PAERIE] KATH / KNIGHT Marriage in Rochester, NY
    2. William M. Kath, age 37, Asst. Signal Supervisor of Erie, PA, married Edna M. Knight, age 29, School Teacher of Erie, PA in Rochester, New York on 3 March, 1927. I have a copy of the Marriage Record (made from microfilm at the Rochester City Archives Office) if anyone needs more information, but I think additional information might also be found at: <http://www2.cityofrochester.net/cs/MarriageRecords/index.cfm> My reason for interest in this marriage is that I have an Edna Knight who also married in Rochester, but 'my' Edna is not this one. Still looking for information about possible descendants of Howard I. Fisher of Erie, who drowned after his ship was torpedoed on Christmas Eve, 1944. See my message of 10/04/03 for more details about Howard and his cousin, Richard Brown. Anyone know if Howard's name is inscribed on the World War II Memorial in Erie? I asked that question of Mr. John Williams of the Erie Veteran's Affairs office back in September, but never received an answer from him.... Best wishes to all and especially to Chuck Bliley, a fellow Rochester Genealogical Society member! Robert F. Wambach Ontario, Wayne County, NY

    1. [PAERIE] Darius Mead Family History Site Online!
    2. November 3, 2003 SOMETHING NEW ON THE WEB! AN ILLUSTRATED BIOGRAPHY OF DARIUS MEAD (1728-1791) Greetings to All: I am pleased to announce the Darius Mead biography on my Web site, <A HREF="http://www.Bliley.net">Bliley.net</A>, is now complete and ready for public access. This is really a family history, written and originally published by Rush Maxwell Blodget for the 1937 Mead family reunion in Youngsville, PA. It is titled: "Darius Mead, His Ancestors and Some of his many decedents, 1728-1791". Darius Mead and his descendants were major contributors to the development of Northwestern, Pennsylvania and the founding of Youngsville and Meadville, Pennsylvania. Visit the Web site at <A HREF="http://www.Bliley.net/family/Darius_Mead/"> http://www.Bliley.net/family/Darius_Mead/</A> Here you will find a transcription of Blodget's 15,000 word booklet posted in HTML, PDF, MS Word and plain text fomats for download. The Web page is relatively large at 130 k, and may take a longer than normal to load, but it contains the complete illustrated manuscript. Unfortunately, the author, Rush Blodget, did not present any citations for his sources. Still the work is far better than nothing, and I doubt he made this all up. I do not have any other significant documentation on the Mead line with the exception of the "Memoirs of Mary Jane Mead Bliley (1827-1913)" my great grandmother who was born in Brokenstraw, PA. (<A HREF="http://www.Bliley.net/family/MJ_Mead/MJ_Mead_Memoirs.html"> http://www.Bliley.net/family/MJ_Mead/MJ_Mead_Memoirs.html</A>) Feel free to pass on the URLs to anyone that may be interested. To date, with only three interested people knowing of the Darius Mead page, it has well over 800 hits in a week! Someone must have leaked the URL to the public before it was ready for "prime-time", or the counter source was spooked by Halloween. If you did pass it on, that is OK, but I would like to know where this hive of Mead kin are located and make sure they are properly introduced to the site. ;-) For other links to my other family history sites with a focus on my Bliley and Dawson lines of Western, PA, please go to my root home page at <A HREF="http://www.Bliley.net">http://www.Bliley.net</A>. Best regards, Charles A. Bliley www.Bliley.net Pittsford, NY (585) 385-6838 (Afternoons & Evenings) P.S. As required by AOL for publishers of mass e-mail messages, I must respect your desire to be removed from the mailing list. If you do not wish to remain on the list, please send me a message with "Mead-Remove" in the subject field. At this hour, I do not have any intentions of publishing any other messages to this list.
