Hello List - My contribution for the night is the Ruhl Cemetery on Ruhl Road in Fairview Township. This old burial ground has had some work done in the past to it, as almost all stones have been 'read' and a small bronze or brass 'gravemarker' has been placed by almost each stone, including footstones. The cemetery is fairly small - just guessing about 20 to 25 feet deep by about 75 to 80 feet long, but it does not receive regular maintenance. As you can see from the pictures, you can walk through it, but it doesn't look like anyone had been in it this year (pictures were taken at the beginning of September). Pictures may be viewed at http://www.zing.com/album/pictures.html?id=4293502693 Bill Klauk Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA

Today's (October 11, 2000) Erie Times-News front page feature article is titled "LOST SOULS" - 'unclaimed remains of a dozen people in Erie County await scattering among the wildflowers". This story by Scott Westcott is not specifically about the Old Almshouse Cemetery, although the feature picture is of the cemetery entrance and several references are made to the cemetery, and today's procedure of cremation of remains of the unclaimed. This is a very timely article as it was only about a week ago that I posted the pictures and the transcription of the 'story' to the maillist. Bill Klauk Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA

The street names of the city of Erie were as follows: Starting at the north and going south from Presque Isle Bay the streets that ran east to west were: First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, Twelfth, Canal, Washington, Penn, Court, Ichabod, Buffalo Starting at the eastern boundary of the city and going west the streets that ran north to south were: Ash Lane, Parade, German, Holland, French, State, Peach, Sassafras, Myrtle, Chestnut, Walnut, Cherry, Poplar, Liberty, Plum Then, as now, State Street was the main street -- and at the time of the 1850 census everything to the east of State was in the East Ward and everything to the West was the West Ward. To the list and Mike, As soon as I can work out (by way of written permission) some copyright details, I will be working on transcribing a booklet written in 1980 (the copyright is 1982) about the Millcreek Township schools from the first school about 1805, up to the present. The book covers to 1980 and I will cover the small changes in the last 20 years. The author has provided me her very last copy, which was done as a teacher-student project, but I only have a verbal okay through a third party with regard to the copyright. However, as a start, I thought I would post first to the list, then as a text document to Mike, the listing of all of the modern day public schools in Millcreek Township. The only school after 1938 in use that is not on the list is the old Millcreek High School, which became Millcreek Junior High School in 1953 and Westminster Junior High School in 1958. This school was used until June 1967 and was demolished in 1968 so that the Millcreek Education Center could be built. Here is the listing: =================================================== Millcreek Township - Millcreek School District - ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS 1916 to present The following schools are no longer in use KEARSARGE ........................ 1916 to 1977 (demolished about 1978-1981) BELLE VALLEY..................... 1924 to 1990 (replaced by new school - demolished 1999) LAKEWOOD ........................ 1926 to 1978 (demolished sometime after 1980 - now a park/playground) TRACY .................................. 1928 to 1998 (replaced by new school - sits idle October 2000) MONTCLAIR ........................ 1938 to 1978 (building in use as Montessori School) Present day Elementary (K-5) Schools in Millcreek ---------------------------------------------------- VERNONDALE ................ 1949 to present RIDGEFIELD .................... 1951 to present ASBURY ........................... 1956 to present CHESTNUT HILL.............. 1965 to present GRANDVIEW ................... 1971 to present BELLE VALLEY (new) ..... 1990 to present TRACY (new) .................... 1998 to present Present day Secondary (6-12) Schools in Millcreek MCDOWELL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ................. 1953 to present MCDOWELL INTERMEDIATE HIGH SCHOOL ... 1973 to present WESTLAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL ............................ 1957 to present JAMES S. WILSON MIDDLE SCHOOL ................ 1967 to present WALNUT CREEK MIDDLE SCHOOL ................... 1993 to present ========================================================= By the way, the reason I mentioned after 1938 above, is that at least one of the one room school houses (the Love School) was in use until that time. When I do eventually get portions of this booklet transcribed, it will be interesting to note that present day Millcreek Township is only about half the size as it was in the 1800s and up until 1920. I have not yet researched where the original 'inside' boundary with the City of Erie actually was, but I do know that the area of 26th and Brown Ave west, and the area of the Burton School east was all a part of Millcreek. Well, this has been to wet your whistle until I can get more done from the booklet. Bill Klauk Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA

I'm searching for information about the family of Hyacinth WETHLI, b. 29 jun 1916 in Chautauqua Co. NY, and died in childbirth 21 Nov. 1937 in Corry, Erie, PA. She md. Wilford C. POMEROY on 25 Aug. 1936. Her parents were William W. WETHLI, b. in Dec. 1872 in PA, and Mattie L. ROWLAND b. 17 March 1895 in LeBoeuf Township, Erie County, PA. I have a little more info about the Rowlands and Wethlis, but very little about Hyacinth and her family. I hear that the family was raising grapes in Chautauqua County. Any help here? Thanks! Linda in Utah
Hi Larry, thanks for the lead, but my Pomeroy "family guy" says that there are two "groups" of Pomeroys in the Erie area. One comes predominantly from the Roulet area in Potter County, PA, and the other (I don't know where they originated) came from a preacher named Pomeroy who was local, and HAD been there a long time. The Pomeroys of Roulet, Potter County, are fairly "new" in Erie, arriving the first part of the 20th century. Thank you for helping. Can you keep looking for Pomeroys as you search for your own records? Let me know if you find any. Linda in Utah "Larry R. Bish" wrote: > There are is a family of Pomeroy in Cranesville. Dear Listers: Can anyone tell me where I would inquire about obtaining copies of Marriage Licenses. I understand there is a wealth of information on the applications, such as age, place of birth, parents, occupation etc. Would they be records kept in the Court System? Jessie B.
