List, Knowing that Mike has been extremely busy lately, I will announce that he has posted a new web page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/cemeteries/StJohns.htm . This page lists 31 names, 30 of which are included on a memorial stone, who were known to still be buried at that location in 1996 when the cemetery was formally abandoned and the area turned to other use. Okay List, Pictures from another cemetery have been posted to another Zing album. This one is the Erie Cemetery at http://www.zing.com/album/?id=4293374393 with initially 20 pictures, most taken from the highest ground along 26th Street. Anyone who has .jpg copies of gravestones or other items of interest within Erie Cemetery may post them directly to the album, or send to me via e-mail attachment if you desire to have something included in this album.. Hi fellow Listers! I work for my local school district and they have yearbooks dating back pretty far. I've seen them, but don't know how far back they go. Our district also has high school records dating back to the 1880s on microfilm. I got mine (graduated in 1980) just the other day. They even had my attendance record!! My suggestion would be to contact the superintendent's office in the school district you are looking in and ask what kind of records they have. You just might get more than yearbook information. I know people have contacted our district to get past records. It is worth a try. And as Gaylene mentioned, the public library is another good place to check. Best of luck!!! I don't know if the Genealogy Room of the Erie Public Library has a copy of the 1908/1909 yearbook for Strong Vincent high school, but I do know they have many of the old yearbooks for Erie. If I remember correctly, some of them date back to the 1890s or so. My husband's gg-uncle, Seth STEINER, graduated from Erie High School in 1909. It was a thrill for us to discover his yearbook picture when we visited the library in 1997. Info about how to contact the library can be found at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/resources.html>. Good luck! Gaylene Kerr Banister Houston, TX [email protected] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~banister/index.html
Anyone have a yearbook for Strong Vincent high school from 1908 or 1909? I'm looking for a picture of Gertrude Kindie/Kendie/Kennedy. That's assuming high schools had yearbooks with pictures then. I know nothing of the history of yearbooks.
Why not try contacting the school? They may have it. Jan
Hi Erie Listers, Today we attended the funeral of a much loved member of our extended family, Chas Wilbur. Chas was father-in-law to my daughter Sallie and was buried in the Phillipsville Cemetary a mile or two from Sallies home on Turner Rd. in Venango township. I expect that I'll take some pics out there and post to a Zing album. If there is anything in particular any of you might need from that cemetary that I could provide I'd be happy to be of help. Best to all...Joe Schmitt
Linda, In speaking to a friend of mine I thought I should let you know that the Union City Historical Society has a book available for $25.00 on Evergreen Cemetery... I have sent Mike a draft of a web page containing 4 photos taken by myself and a table (list) of 31 names that were provided to me by Audry Mascharka for the memorial stone for this former cemetery. Here is the text portion that will eventually appear on the page. QUOTE - There was formerly a cemetery near the corner of Sassafras Street and 23rd Street which became unused in the later part of the 19th century. Supposedly most burials were relocated to Erie Cemetery around the turn of the century, but some remained, apparently to satisfy a deed requirement. Several years ago, a recording was made of all remaining graves, and any remaining stones were buried, the remains were left untouched, and the site is now used for other purposes. There is a 'flat in the ground' single stone memorial plaque between a parking lot and the back of the Lutheran Home with 30 names recorded. Audry Mascharka advised that there is also a listing in the St. John's Lutheran Church office, which she transcribed. There is one additional name on that list which is not on the stone as indicated by an asterisk below. Audry Mascharka also reported that she believes that at least two other of her ancestors or relatives could have been buried here but without grave stones and that her great grandmother was buried here in 1866 and then her body was moved in 1876 to Erie Cemetery. She believes the cemetery must have closed in that period of time. In addition to the 30 names, the stone reads - "ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH CEMETERY DEDICATED TO THE FOLLOWING ON APRIL 11, 1996" followed by the names and dates and at the bottom "AND WE HONOR THOSE ALSO BURIED HERE WHOSE NAMES ARE KNOWN ONLY TO GOD". - UNQUOTE As the names are all in a table, it is hard to extract them so I am not including them here, but that should make everyone anxious to see the future web page. Hi List, Marian Fromknecht was busy this weekend trying out a digital camera at Trinity Cemetery and has kindly uploaded about 35 or so more pictures to the album at http://www.zing.com/album/pictures.html?id=4293640043 including a map of the cemetery. I was also busy for a couple hours today, Monday, prior to feeding all the hungry people at the soup kitchen, with a trip to the top of the hill in Erie Cemetery. I have added three pictures that I took of the Sigsbee Reservour across 26th St to the City of Erie - http://www.zing.com/album/?id=4293598237 . The pictures I took in the cemetery itself will be put in an Erie Cemetery album which I don't think I have created yet. Bill Klauk Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA
Bill... Do you have any plans for putting the Evergreen Cemetery on Zing? Seems that all of the generous Erie County volunteers are having problems finding time to get to Evergreen to do rubbings or photos. Thanks... Hi Teresa, This isn't the answer to your question to the Erie Co List, but you may want to know the following information if you don't already have it: I found a record, of Mary Alice Souther's marriage to Henry Carter on 8 Feb 1891 in Saline County Illinois, at the Illinois State Archives website http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/database.html : CARTER, HENRY SOUTHER, M A (BK A-1 PG 189) SALINE 02/08/1891 C/ 115 But I did not see a record of a marriage between Mary Alice Souther or Mary Alice Carter to a Mr. Andrew Jackson. The Illinois State Archives marriage index only covers up to the year 1900 or so, Perhaps she married Mr. Jackson in Texas. However, in trying to cover all possibilities for the 2nd marriage of Mary Alice to Mr. Jackson, I did find the following: JACKSON, ANDREW A CARTER, THRESA ANN (BK C PG 242) SALINE 08/03/1893 A 1/ 235 Then, just to confuse the issue, I found the following, also in Saline Co. Again, I don't know that they mean anything in particular, only that the one from 1872 for Mr. Souther and Miss Boyd could be Mary Alice's parents, as the one for Mr. Souther and Miss Lowe could be a second marriage for Mr. Souther: SOUTHER, ANDREW J BOYD, JULIA A SALINE 02/15/1872 C/ 113 SOUTHER, ANDREW J LOWE, MARTHA A SALINE 04/08/1880 A 1/0032 SOUTHER, JOHN L DURHAM, GALE I SALINE 01/06/1874 C/ 211 If you want to send to Saline County and request a copy of the marriage license & [possible] marriage license application, this is the address. You may get lucky and the Saline Co Clerk may find a marriage license application, in which case you will learn the names of the parents: Saline County Clerk 10 East Poplar Harrisburg IL 62946 (618) 253-8197 ML & MLA $2.00 each [before 1916] Hope this helps, Susan in Oregon [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: James Young [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, November 06, 2000 5:00 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [PAERIE] Please help me find my gr. grandmother? Hi Lists, This is my first time on the lists. I have a great grandmother, Mary Alice Jackson, who was born on April 28, 1873 in Illinois. She is born Mary Alice Souther and she married to Carter, then married to Jackson. So she is known as Mary Alice Souther Carter Jackson. She went from Illinois to Texas, then to Pennsylvania and she is buried somewhere in Pennsylvania. My elder aunt told me she believe it is Erie County, PA. She married a man last name "Jackson" and she think his first name is Andrew. I do not know where she is buried at and when she died. Will you help me to look up in the Cemetery Book for her and her husband, Andrew Jackson? Please!!!! I will humbly appreciated your kindness and helpfulness to help me out. Thanks. I don't recall seeing the original post regarding BRINDLE but the reply caught my eye. I have done a lot of research on this family as my house I live in was built in 1835 by Malachia Brindle, son of Mathias Brindle. Mathias gave portions of the land he had settled to his sons as they came of age. My ancestors purchased it from Malachia's heirs in 1866. Pat
Here is a link to go to the Albion Library web site and it lists hours open and information about the History Room. I am one of the three volunteers for the History Room and generally we are there Mon & Wed mornings <A HREF="http://www.erie.net/~albion/">Click here: Albion Library</A>
The cemetery locations were placed into the townships basis information available which is some cases was just a post office. As Albion borough itself is in Conneaut Twp, when I made the list that I sent to Mike to post, anything that said Albion was put into Conneaut. In the case of Hope Cemetery, the information which I was working from did not say Lundys Lane or Wellsburg so this definitely needs to be moved into Elk Creek Twp. In the case of Pageville, I only just now noticed a crossroads on the map with that name in Elk Creek so that cemetery needs to be moved also. Hi List, In response to Mary Mills saying the Hope Cemetery is in Lundy's or as some call it Wellsburg. That is correct! My mother still lives in Cranesville, Elk Creek Township & it is just down Crane Road, take a left & it is just down the road. I am not sure about Pageville Cemetery though. The Albion Library has much information on all of the cemeteries, I use them quite often for some of my genealogy since most of my family still lives in that area. Hi List, As a former resident of Albion, Elk Creek Township, for twenty plus years, I am quite sure Pageville is in Elk Creek Township and not Conneaut Township. All of you Elk Creek residents out there, help me out, or anyone else. Also isn't Hope Cemetery, Lundys Lane--Wellsburg, also in Elk Creek Township rather than Conneaut Township? I have checked the maps and the Hope Cemetery could be a question, but if I am correct, then our cemetery list needs to be changed. I do know many of my family is buried there. According to an editorial in the local newspaper The Albion News, which I still subscribe to, has all of their newspapers on microfilm from the 1920's. I have heard that the Albion Library has a wealth of information on Elk Creek Township also that the Erie Library does not have. When all else in your search fails, you might give the Library a call and maybe they can help. Mary Silfies Mills
