Ed, Did any of your Herrons marry McClellands. I have not been able to learn anything about my g-g-grandfather, Cyrus Herron McClelland. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mcclell2/homepage/mcclell.htm Ed McClelland, Alexandria, Virginia.
I was just informed by the Erie County Library that the Erie County Historical Society is working on a website but, as of today, it has yet to be published. Linda
Dick, What good news! I am researching two names in Erie County: HERRON: James Hervey HERRON, Sr, died Erie, PA 1895 Josephine Fuller HERRON, died Erie, PA 1895 I believe that succeeding generations were also buried in Erie LEWIS: Cora Edith LEWIS, daughter of George Trumbull and Alice Baldwin LEWIS married James Hervey HERRON, JR at St. Paul's Church, Erie, 1900 I am assuming that James Hervey HERRON, Sr. was associated with a Methodist Church or educational institution during his years in Erie: 1869-1895. Thank you for your assistance. Joe I think I can help you. In the summer of 1999 the Erie Society for Genealogical Research read the gravestones in Trinity Cemetery. I happen to have the database from that reading containing over 16000 names right here on my computer. There is only one Michalena in the whole bunch, so it must be yours. In the St. Stan's section I found: Michalena Winiecki 1860-1943 John Winiecki 1857-1943 Helen Winiecki 1908-1960 Samuel Winiecki 1900-1954 The St. Stan's section is about the area you described, and the other two people you named are also in that section, so I think this must be who you are looking for. You can write to the cemetery to see what more information they might have in their records. On behalf of Mike, anyone with old photographs of people and/or places should scan them into .jpg format and send them to me at [email protected] and I will get them posted on the appropriate page. We have both a page dedicate to people, and also a page for old time pictures which is mostly scenery. Due to my residence in Central Louisiana, I request that some wonderful person assist me in my genealogical hunt. Would like to have the help of camera buffs for a project trying to find my Polish Roots. A distant great-aunt of mine is buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery. I need her name to be able to contact Holy Trinity or St Stanislaus Churches to get information. I know where she is buried so you do not need to hunt or do a lookup. I just need a wonderful person with good eyesight and a paper and pencil. You will not even need to get out of your car!!! The coordinates for the gravestone are as follows: Using the main gate of Holy Trinity Cemetery as a refeence point of "6 o'clock" her stone is at roughly "2 o'clock". Her stone is right near to the outer ring road in that part of the cemetery. It is an very tall stone (2ft? high). It is located next to a very old tree that is between the stone and the road curb. The stone is a husband+wife stone. Her first name (I think) is MICHALENA W _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (I think the first name is Michalenea and the last name starts with a "W"). Her and her husband's stone is to the immediate left of the graves of my grandparents: Stanley and Veronica(Virginia) FILIPOWICZ. Also looking for pictures to put in my Family Tree Maker of all Hilinski/Chylinski gravestones in Holy Trinity especially: Theophilus/Teofil, Franczek/Frank, Marianna/Maria Hojinowska Hilinski, Antonina (Pleczynska) Hilinski. I would like a digital picture if possible, but will gladly accept your verbal statement.
I have an old portrait photo of my great-great grandfather, Josiah Emerson, and his siblings from Erie County. Judging by the ages of the family, this photo would have been taken in the late 1890s. Would this be appropriate for the Erie site or should I contact the museum or historical society? Thanks... Linda Emerson Twain Harte, CA
It is only six pictures, but I have started an album at http://www.zing.com/album/?id=4293254321 for Ye Old Burying Ground, also known as Cottage Grove Cemetery, in West Springfield. As indicated in a previous message, this cemetery is on the south side of U.S. Route 20, west of Huntley Road and east of the Route 5 turnoff. Pictures were taken on Sept 9, 2000, but I was at the tail end of a long day of picture taking and my Sony rechargable needed a charge so I could not take any more pictures. Maybe in the spring I will wander back out that way. Bill Klauk Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA
I have added about 12 or so pictures of the St. Stanislaus (Polish) section of the Trinity Cemetery to that album at http://www.zing.com/album/pictures.html?id=4293640043 . I am not sure if this is 100 percent incorporated into Trinity Cemetery from a records keeping standpoint. The only way to view graves in this section is to drive through Trinity Cemetery proper to the southwest corner to enter the narrow one way straight driveway which runs in a southeast to northwest direction and exits on the West Lake Road. As always, if anyone has any pictures of gravestones in this or any other cemetery that they wish to have posted, you may send to me at [email protected] and I will take care of them. By the way, these lastest pictures were taken on 10/20/00, after the first bit of snow, but before the big Thanksgiving week snow. Bill Klauk Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA

This is the Cottage Grove Cemetery, also called West Springfield or Ye Old Burying Ground. Can any of you West County people (or anyone else with knowledge) give me the name of the small cemetery right on the south side of US 20 in Springfield Twp, just to the east of the Route 5 turnoff and just to the west of Huntley Road. I took a small number of pictures back on Sept 9th, 2000 including one ornate stone of Esther Thompson half buried in a tree, and one with an FLT(IOOF) flagholder and flag of BAKER widow. There are some very decorative stones in this cemetery, but my camera battery had died so I only managed about 5 or 6 pictures (this was the same day I took the shoreline shots from the wildlife preserve). Thank you! Cheryl (Cheryl Trapp Boyd)
Patrick Knierman's URL below is missing part of the address. The correct URL is http://www.statelibrary.state.pa.us/ (the word 'state' was left out). Thank you Patrick for bringing it to the list's attention. Those of you who are not members of ancestry.com should take advantage of this offer to poke around in their 'paid' section. This also includes what they have online in the new census image section. Enjoy! Joyce ____________________________________________________________ FREE ACCESS TO ALL ANCESTRY.COM SUBSCRIBER DATABASES ============================================================ Here's the opportunity you've been waiting for! Ancestry.com is offering free access to all of its databases through December 21. This is your chance to see why more than 270,000 researchers have chosen to subscribe to Ancestry.com in their quest to discover their family's history. Included in the offer is access to the images of original census records that Ancestry.com recently began posting. These top-quality images represent a more true-to-life depiction of the records and are in most cases better than the original in readability. Ancestry.com's Images Online are scanned in 256 shades of gray to allow for variations in tone, as opposed to the less expensive method of bi-tonal technologies used by competitors. The entire set of U.S. Federal Censuses is expected to be online by spring 2001. I have a possible solution for those "out of towners" who are looking for Pennsylvania newspapers. Try the State Library of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg (www.statelibrary.pa.us). They have many newspapers from NW PA on microfilm, which can be checked out. You could try interlibrary loan as well. The library webpage has a search form as well, which can narrow down the search. Enter Erie County and newspapers as an exact phrase and you'll get the list of what they have. Off the top of my head, they have the Erie Weekly Gazette from 1850-, the Erie Times from the 1880s, the Union City papers from the early 1900's, some Corry papers, etc. Regards, Patrick Knierman Gettysburg, PA
Thanks to Bill Klauks post re Ancestry.com and it's holiday free special, I found Maryan and Magdalena Brzozowski in the 1910 Census. Thanks again, Bill! joe
