    1. [PAERIE] KEEP family
    2. Jennifer
    3. Hello fellow listers! First of all, please excuse the duplicate postings to the lists. I just want to make sure that I get in touch with everyone I possibly can. I am looking for information on the KEEP family of Erie County, PA. I have a family tree book copyright 1899, Chicago, IL compiled by Frank E. Best. The title of the book is 'John KEEP of Longmeadow, Massachusetts 1660 - 1676 and his Descendants'. The book incorporates an unpublished KEEP genealogy prepared by W. J. KEEP in 1866 and a record of ancestry by Helen E. KEEP and the extended ancestry of Sallie KEEP BEST. I was told that there was another book, published much later about the KEEP family. I wrote to the publisher, (Heart of the Lakes Publishing) and they told me to contact the KEEP Family Society. I've not been able to locate this organization and was wondering if anyone could help me. I would love to have a copy of this book as I'm directly descended from Theda Malvina KEEP, daughter of Daniel Brush KEEP. Theda is my great-great grandmother. Theda was born in Keepville, Erie County, PA February 3, 1855. Is Keepville still a 'town' in Erie County? What cemeteries are there in that area? Could there possibly be a family plot there? Can anyone give me any information on Keepville, the KEEP family or getting a copy of the latest KEEP genealogy? If there are any cousins out there, I'd love to be in touch with you. There are so many helpful people on these lists that I'm hoping I connect with someone. Thanks for all your help! Jennifer [email protected] in chilly, windy Dodge City, KS

There are several mentions of Michael Hare in _The History of Erie Co., Pennsylvania_ on line at < http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/bates/batesindx.htm>. Michael Hare is mentioned in the first paragraph of Section II, Chapter XII, The Pioneers. There are a couple mentions of him in Section II, Chapter XXVII, Miscellaneous. First, he is mentioned in the section about Revolutionary War veterans and second, in the chapter about oldest men and women of Erie Co. Michael lived to the grand old age of 115 years 8 months 23 days! More mentions in Part IV Chapter XVII, City of Corry; Chapter II, Waterford Township; Chapter XIII, Greenfield Township; and Chapter XVIII, Wayne Township. Hare Creek is also mentioned several times in these chapters. The following is a bio for his grandson (this isn't online yet). JAMES HARE, farmer, P. O. Le Boeuf, was born Oct. 22, 1815, in Le Boeuf Township, Erie Co., Penn., second son of John Hare, a native of Pennsylvania, who must have come to Erie Co. about 1800, and whose father was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, and also served in the French war. He witnessed the defeat of Braddock, and shouldered his musket to go forth in the war of 1812, when over eighty years of age; he died in 1843 at the patriarchal age of nearly one hundred and sixteen years. John Hare reared a family of thirteen children, five now living; he died in 1854. Our subject married, in 1835, Harriet Preston, a native of New York State, and a daughter of Jeremiah Preston. To them have been born seven children—Amos W.; Stephen W., who served twenty-one months in the late war and was honorably discharged; Silas H., a soldier in the 83rd P.V.I., and died in the hospital at Alexandria in 1862; Martin E., a soldier in the 83rd P.V.I., was missing at the battle of the Wilderness and never since heard from; Mary J., widow of David Cottrell; Lydia A., wife of S. B. Stoke, and Aaron L. Mr. Hare is descended from one of the oldest and most respected families of the county. He owns eighty acres of improved land—a part of the old homestead. He and his wife are members of the Christian Church. In politics he is a Republican. Source: Samuel P. Bates, History of Erie County, Pennsylvania, (Warner, Beers & Co.: Chicago, 1884), Part VI, Biographical Sketches, Waterford Township. Another write-up about Michael is at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~indian/hare.htm> Hope this helps! 1. [PAERIE] Off Topic - Snow, Snow and more Snow
    2. William Klauk
    3. After just watching Mario make his return with the Pittsburgh Penguins, I switched over to the local 11 PM news to hear that we are point 3 inches away from 6th place for the snowiest December on record in Erie, this after hitting second place all time in November. Those of you in Erie know what I am talking about. The snowiest December is still 20" away which was in 1989 and although I was not here most of the time during that month, I did have a weekend or two at home and have some documented pictures. Erie is now over 86 inches of snow for the season! To keep this a little on topic, a list member of another list that I belong to posted a reminder message that this is the time of year when many people start using new computers and sometimes even get an interest in family history and join mail lists such as this one, and/or visit web sites such as Erie County (PA) Genealogy. These people for the most part are "newbies" and sometimes 'discover' already published family trees which may or may not be correct, and sometimes ask questions, or post queries that to the well experienced might seem "dumb" or off the wall. I am still a "newbie" myself as I have only been doing my own family history study for about two years. Someone else remarked that you are still a "newbie" to genealogy until you have been doing it for about 20 years! Point to make is that if you see questions or queries that might seem "not up to standard", it might be from someone who is new to either computers or genealogy and be kind. To cite an example from my own experience, my career was in messaging where in the pre e-mail days there was telex or teletype - there were no small letters - only CAPITALS. Today, when someone sends a message with all capitals, it is taken to mean that the person is SHOUTING. But for one such as myself who didn't have small letters, I only knew CAPITALS when I first had a PC with e-mail. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas or other seasonal celebration, and wishing everyone a Happy 2001 (although I am sure I will be posting more before then). 1. [PAERIE] Be kind to others (formerly Snow, snow and more snow)
    2. Jennifer
    3. Hi Bill! You are so right about being kind to fellow genealogists. We all have to start somewhere. Besides, no question is 'dumb' when it is asked sincerely. I know from my journalism training that in order to find out the story, you have to ask tons of questions and hopefully one of them will be the 'intelligent' one that leads you to the answer.:o) I've been interested in genealogy for years, but only actively researching for the past 4.5. I have been truly blessed to have had wonderful people offer to help me and guide me along the way. Because of this, I offer help to others no matter how trivial the question may seem. You just never know when that breakthrough might come. I can honestly say that the majority of the genealogists I've come in contact with are wonderful people who are always willing to lend a helping hand. In turn, I try to do what I can to help others. Thanks again for a timely reminder for all of us. We all need to keep in mind that we had to start somewhere, too!! Happy New Year!! 2. Rüdiger Kemmler
    3. Hello all Merry Christmas to everyone, I'm searching for Harry Kemmler or his descendants. In the SSDI I have found a Harry Kemmler, born 2/14/1893 and died May 1976 in Erie. The birth date would fit in the data I have already. Harry was in the United States Service in May 1919. His father John Jacob Kemmler was born in Alexandria June 23, 1850 and died May 5, 1919. His mother was Alice Mauffet or Moffit. So if anyone of you have any information on Harry or his descendants I would very much appreciate, if you would share this information with me. Kind regards, Ruediger Kemmler Munich, Germany

    1. [PAERIE] 38 pictures added to City of Erie on Zing
    2. William Klauk
    3. Hi List, Just to let you know that I have added 38 pictures to the back end of the Zing Album for the City of Erie which you can view at http://www.zing.com/album/?id=4293598237 . These are mostly pictures taken on 12/20 of St. Peter's Cathedral, the 'skyscraper' at 10th and State, main Post Office, Union Station, the Maennerchor building at 16th and State along with some building detail work close-ups, and last but not least - the ruins of the Eagle Brewery/Koehler Brewery on State St between 22nd and 23rd. I say ruins because although the two main buildings are still standing, and the original white colored Eagle Brewery looks to be in better shape, if some group or organization doesn't try to restore those buildings I believe they won't last but a few more years, with the weather we have around here. I am thinking of perhaps splitting up the City of Erie album, but short of that, I do plan on re-ordering the pictures, but for now felt it easiest for everyone to see them (who want to see them) to just go to the back part of the album. Think the clock just turned over to Dec 22, so only 3 more days till Christmas - I haven't spotted any Elk, but there are a lot of deer tracts in what was my garden (now covered with snow, and ice, and snow and ice - winter is definitely here in Erie!) 3. After sending Linda 3 separate messages with possible suggestions, I decided to haul down my Nelson's and low and behold there is a William B. Kimball, farmer, Union City, tract #135 Union township in 1847, clearing a 110 acre farm where he was living in 1896 (born 1822). As indicated to Linda earlier, there is a KIMBLE Hill Road and a KIMBLE Corners, so perhaps the name Kimball has become Kimble. Only a guess as I am not familiar with the area. 2. HI everyone! I made to PA AOK...beat the snow storm that was brewing in Atlanta. My parents picked me up in DuBois and we took the scenic route back to Emporium (Cameron County). Along the way we saw over 60 Elk...35 in one herd! Six Bull elk with their impressive horns. They are fairly tame..one group I was able to walk up to them about 30 feet away! Hope you are all geared up for the Holiday! You can reach me at this email address if you need to....I get the county email at this address too. Mike Wennin

    3. Ed, I noted your query re Cyrus HERRON McCLELLAND. I am researching the HERRON line starting with John and Rebecca HERRON who settled, supposedly, first in Lancaster, PA and then in New Richmond, Clermont County, OH. While I have been able to document the family from their move to Ohio in 1816, I can find no trace of them in Lancaster. John HERRON's grandson, James Hervey HERRON, Sr, was a Methodist minister who lived from 1870 until his death in 1895 in Girard, Erie County, PA, where he and the next generation are buried. 1. [PAERIE] Little Italy Historical Marker - 16th & Walnut St - Erie
    2. William Klauk
    3. Hi List, About two moths ago, I snapped a picture of a historical marker across the street from St. Paul's RC Church at 16th and Walnut titled, LITTLE ITALY. I didn't realize it at the time that it was more a story of the founding of the church, as much as it described the Italian settlement. Please excuse the capital letters, I am not shouting but this is the wat the letters were depicted on the marker sign. There will be several pictures of this marker posted shortly to the City of Erie Zing album, although not right away. If anyone can fill in the names of the two newspapers, there was a tree branch blocking several of the words on the sign and I am not familiar with those names. QUOTE THIS MARKER IS DEDICATED TO OUR ITALIAN ANCESTORS WHO IMMIGRATED TO ERIE FROM ALL REGIONS OF ITALY AND ESTABLISHED LITTLE ITALY. THE FIRST ITALIANS SETTLED IN ERIE AROUND 1864. IN 1895, THERE WERE FOUR ITALIAN SETTLEMENTS IN ERIE, AND LITTLE ITALY WAS THE LARGEST OF THEM. THESE IMMIGRANTS SETTLED ON WEST 16th STREET BETWEEN CHERRY AND POPLAR STREETS AND THE CORNER OF WEST 16th & WALNUT STREETS. TWO RAILROADS FORMED THE EARLY BOUNDARIES OF LITTLE ITALY. THE NICKEL PLATE RAILROAD ON WEST 19th STREET FORMED THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY. AND THE NEW YORK CENTRAL FORMED THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY ALONG WEST 13th AND 14th STREETS. BY 1911, LITTLE ITALY'S POPULATION GREW TO 3,000 RESIDENTS AND INCLUDED NINE CITY BLOCKS FROM HURON STREET TO WEST 17th STREET, AND FROM CHESTNUT STREET TO POPLAR STREET. IN MAY 1891, DURING A GATHERING AT A LOCAL FRUIT STORE, THE PLANS FOR THE FIRST ITALIAN CHURCH WERE FORMULATED. FROM THIS HUMBLE BEGINNING EMERGED ST. PAUL ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. MONEY WAS RAISED TO PURCHASE THE OLD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AT 17th AND CHESTNUT STREETS. THE BUILDING WAS RELOCATED TO THE SITE OF THE PRESENT RECTORY ON WALNUT STREET BETWEEN 16th AND 17th STREETS. IN 1928, CONSTRUCTION BEGAN ON THE CHURCH AT ITS PRESENT LOCATION. IT WAS DEDICATED IN 1935. DURING ITS ZENITH, LITTLE ITALY SUPPORTED TWO BANKS; THE BANK OF ITALY AND THE ITALIAN-AMERICAN BANK, FLOURISHING NEWSPAPERS LA PROGRESSO, LA ????MA AND LATER, LA CHITA?RA. PROMINENT ITALIAN DOCTORS FOUNDED THE ROSE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. THERE WERE MANY FRATERNAL SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS FORMED. THE MOST PROMINENT WERE LA NUOVA AURORA SOCIETY AND THE CALABRESE CLUB. THE SPONSOR OF THIS HISTORICAL MARKER: THE GIUSEPPE MAZZINI CIVIC ASSOCIATION UNQUOTE Perhaps someone on the list with some genealogical ties to Little Italy might want to contribute some material that could justify a page on the web site.
