    1. [PAERIE] BUSH, William O. or William R. (Tri-County Problem)
    2. D. L. Parry
    3. Looking for any sources that might help resolve a dilemna that crosses state lines and three counties. My great great grandfather was William Bush, who married Margaret Greeley the younger sister of the famous editor Horace Greeley. On the 1850 census for Spring Creek, Warren county, PA he is listed as William O. Bush age 32, born VT. This gives him a birth year of 1817/18. Their marriage is mentioned in the Fredonia NY newspaper clipping as marriage of "Oscar" Bush to Margaret Greeley. This is definitely my guy, because their youngest child is definitely my great grandfather Arthur, who was 1 month old on the 1850 census. Problem. Family is not on Warren county 1860 census, but NY 1855, US 1860, NY 1865 and later censuses show his wife and children living in Clymer, Chautauqua county, NY. Where is William? Assumption: death or divorce prior to 1855. Next clue: The Beers History of Erie county, in the article on the Greeley family, ends with "Marguerite united herself to a writing master named Bush, from whom she parted." That's all, but it suggests divorce might be my answer to William's whereabouts after 1850. Next clue: Quite by accident I find a William Bush on the 1860 census for Elk Creek twp, Erie county, PA. This William is also born VT, age 42 also giving a birth year of 1817/18. Aha! think I. There he is, living with his parents (maybe), a new young wife half his age, and starting a new young family with son Darius age 2 months. This looks promising, and in the Erie Public Library I find a January 15, 1899 burial listing for him in the Hope Cemetery in Wellsburg (which as we know from earlier posts is in Elk Creek twp.). So my wife and I drive up from Florida to investigate in person and what do we find? The burial record actually shows William "R." Bush, not William "O." His headstone in the cemetery also shows William R. Bush. Age is correct, place of birth is correct. I haven't found any other William Bushes from Vermont of that age anywhere. So how do I prove whether this is my gggfather or not? Is it likely that the informant for the burial got his middle initial wrong? Is there a marriage or divorce record that might give me a clue? Where would I find an obituary from Wellsburg area for January 15, 1899? Anyone have any ideas?? Dan Parry in Jacksonville, Florida [email protected]

    2. William Klauk
    3. Hello List, First, let me say that it is an honor to have been asked to be the Co-Coordinator for Erie County (PA) Genealogy and co-host for the web site. As Mike indicated, I have been making changes to the site on his behalf for about three weeks now. As additional material is obtained, I will try to fill it in on the appropriate pages where possible. In the case of photos and/or scanned images, I have decided to place them in one or more Zing albums until I have gathered enough for a particular page theme. One such album has just been created with a link on the Old Time Photo page. This album is at http://www.zing.com/album/pictures.html?id=4293143207 and consists of scans of 6 postcards sent in by Ron Smith, one sent in by Joe Schmitt, and one of East High School in 1930 that I scanned in. I also have some pictures from 3 other people that I am trying to work into a particular page. If you have not done so recently, please visit the site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/ and look around. Mike and I both welcome your comments, and especially your material, concerning the site. 1. [PAERIE] Happy New Year!
    2. Mike
    3. HI Folks! I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year! I also want to thank each of your for your contribution and support for the site. We have come a long way the past 4 months in breathing life into the Erie County site! We could not have done it without the help of those of you who take the time to transcribe the books, cemeteries, obits and more. And also those of you who share your families with us, your walls and your successes and then leave trails for others to follow. You will never really know the contribution that you have been for many many people. You all are truly the essence of what Genealogy is all about and I am proud to have been the coordinator of your venture these past few months. As you know, my new job has been much more time consuming than my previous job and I have not had the time or energy to put into the site like I want to. In that light please join me in officially welcoming Bill Klauk as Co-Coordinator for the Erie County (PA) Genealogy web site. Bill has served well as a Township Coordinator for Millcreek Township and has been managing the day-to-day maintenance of the site for several weeks now. I know you all have been enjoying his photos and stories! Bill will make sure things keep happening on the site, will keep up the excitement level and will be a huge asset to the site. I am happy to have him as my partner! I don't like to single out people in a project like this, because it is such a team effort, but I must single out a couple of people. One is Gaylene Kerr Banister. I know it took HUNDREDS of hours to transcribe the History of Erie County. I have seen that book...it is HUGE. And now she is posting hundreds of Biographies where folks from all over the genealogy world will have access to them. We are all very fortunate that she took the time to do this project and to share it with us! I am personally deeply grateful. Barb Seyler, who has contributed much and has been my hearty supporter. We live nearby each other and will soon be meeting. Dee Davidson is also a valued supporter and contributor. Last but certainly not least, Marian Fromknecht who has posted hundreds of obits on the Gen Connect site, which once again will benefit hundreds of people all over the country. You all have my deep appreciation! There are many other folks whose contributions are equally important and valuable and I am thankful for your time and commitment. Bill and I are looking forward to 2001 and are committed to bringing you more data, more people and more leads to your families rich heritage! Best Wishes for the New Year! 3. Hi Barb... Happy New Year! I was able to obtain quite a few obits from the Union City Public Library. The person who assisted me is the Library Director, Ruth Cogan, and her email address is mailto:[email protected] . Here is some info from her first reply to my inquiry: "The Union City Public Library has some obituary records taken from local newspapers, as well as copies of the local newspaper, Times-Leader, dating back to 1865. If you could provide us with names, dates, or whatever you have, we would be glad to research this information for you. Generally, we charge $5.00 per hour for this work. If you have dates, or if the information is readily available, there would not be a charge. The fee only applies if we have to search through the microfilm. Hope this helps. Ruth Cogan, Library Director." Good luck... Linda Barb Seyler wrote: > Hi Genealogy Friends! > > Does anyone know if there is microfilm available somewhere for the Union City Times, in 1901. 3. Although this mail list goes through a filter process at Rootsweb, several list administrators in PA have advised that they are getting a substantial number of 'rejected' messages containing the Snow White worm virus that is properly known as W95.Hybris.Gen. As there are probably a lot of new computer users at this time, the chances to get this worm virus in private e-mail increases. Symantec (Norton Anti-Virus) has this at the top of their list. Although I do not like to use a genealogy mail list to advise about viruses and worms, the fact that several list administrators have been discussing it on the 'administrators' mail list, prompts me to bring this to everyone's attention and to urge each of you to make sure your have your PCs properly protected with your favorite anti-virus program, and urge you to make sure you have updated your virus definitions file with the various methods built into each anti-virus software. Please do not start a discussion of viruses and/or worms and/or anti-virus software on this mail list. Thank you for the interuption of your New Year's Eve parties and Happy 2001 to all.
