I have recently discovered that there were TWO Abraham Emersons living in Erie County, PA at the same time. The families are as follows: Children of Abraham & Apama (Emes) Emerson: John C. Cordelia Puduthan Julia Jane Ansil Versel Lorenzo (also found as Abraham Lorenzo) Levi Perry H. Children of Abraham & Eliza Emerson: Abraham Robert Emmaline Mary William L. Charles H. Josiah I have information on both families, including census records, if anyone is interested. Linda Emerson Twain Harte, CA
Is anyone on the list planning a trip to the Erie County Public Library? If so, please contact me. I understand there is a reference book on the Evergreen Cemetery (Union City) and I would like to have a name checked. Thanks... You have done such a great job on the photos. Really appreciate them. I grew up in Knox, Clarion Co., PA, and have fond memories of our family making trips to shop in Erie and then out to the lake to picnic and swim. I am sure my dad has some photos, but he still lives in Knox and does not have a scanner and I am out here in Hays, KS with a scanner and no pictures except for what I sent you of Albion. Just wanted to let you know I appreciate this Erie site and all the hard work all of you have put into it. While growing up I only knew of my mother being raised in Albion. Had no idea I had Erie City & Erie Co. roots. Lines I have so far: Magill from Ireland to Erie, Kennedy from Ireland to Erie, Thorn/Thorne from NY to Erie, Chase & Wescott from NH, Mass, & NY to Washington Twp., Webb from Clarion Co. & m. to Benson & McClure in Waterford and Buzza families related to me from Cornwall, Eng. to Erie Co. Again, thank you to all of you. This is the best group. Betty Macdonald [email protected]
I have also been busy, although Mike did most of the work Saturday evening. He did push some of it off to me and I updated the Faces of Erie County page, and added a few links to the Links page. There are about 8 new pages that Barb Seyler has sent in and I will work on those Sunday and let everyone know about them. One link I added was to a separate project called Migrations. There is a page for Erie County where anyone can post information about the migration path of your ancestors. I need to look into it some more but it seems to supplement our site nicely. Hi Folks! I spent a couple of hours tonight uploading the final 17 chapters of Bates History of Erie County! Once again a special thanks to Gaylene for all her time and hard work....my fingers ache just thinking of all the typing she did to accomplish this!! We are very fortunate to have this valuable resource online!! If you find it useful, please take a moment and thank Gaylene. I also noticed that she has been busy tonight uploading more biographies from the book into the BIOGRAPHY section online. There are now over 425 searchable biographies on the site! (PLUS almost 400 Obituaries are listed too!) AWESOME! Hi Listers and Ian Brown...I have checked my copy of Robert MacDonald and David Frew's "Home Port Erie" for references to the war effort participation of our four best known local ship yards (Loomis, Paasch, Lund, and Nolan) and have found none. However, as the Great Lakes fleet of ore carriers and all of its auxiliary vessels were a vital part of the nations war machine, an assignment at virtually any Great Lakes yard would have some war effort ramifications. I'm including a link to what is called"The Mother of All Maritime Links" to help in your search. Good luck! Joe http://www.boat-links.com/boatlink.html
Hi Bill, That unidentified Ron Smith photo is of the old Erie City Hall (1884-1963). The tower was 156' high. My info source again is a publication of the Erie County Historical Society, "Lost Erie" by John Claridge. About $20 when I bought it 3 yrs ago. Does anyone know if there is a site that can "translate" the location parameters given on a Homestead Record? Thanks... Linda
Thanks to Ron Smith, we now have some great added scanned post cards (actually I think Ron digitally photographed them) at http://www.zing.com/album/pictures.html?id=4293143207 . Included are 'old time' pictures of the high schools. One is not labeled and I think it might be the original Cathedral Prep, please provide information if you are sure, or if I have a wrong caption. I have also extracted (blown up) the portion of the GCMurphy picture showing 926 State and added the comments previously submitted by Joe Schmitt. There are several other pictures submitted by Ron that I haven't got to yet, along with some people pics that I have to work on next. The rest of ths weekend will probably be spent on a second pass through a 'genealogy treasure box' that I found at my parent's house on Thursday. My late German grandmother who died in 1988 two months short of her 100th birthday had saved almost every greeting card ever sent to her by family members and a lot of family letters and notes, including some old ones from Germany. This is my father's side of the family for which I have been severely lacking genealogical information. This box was literally buried in what has become the junk room at my parents house, that is boxes of stuff go in, but never seem to come back out! As this is a needed downstairs bedroom if my parents should get to the point of not being able to climb stairs, I am helping my Mom clean it, and able to find 'treasure' at the same time. To List, Can anyone help Ian Brown with the below query? Please reply to him, or back to the list as I am only forwarding the query. Bill Klauk ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, January 06, 2001 1:16 PM Subject: WWI Shipyards I am looking for any information on federal shipyards in Erie, PA in operation during WWI. My grandfather was a Swedish immagrant and carpenter who was sent to help in one of these shipyards in lieu of deportation. It didn't seem as though your military index would help with this information, and I understand that this may not be the proper venue for this query, but any response at all would be greatly appreciated. I also wanted to add that this website seems quite further developed than our Onondaga County New York GenWebsite. Keep up the good work! Thanks again. Ian Brown Syracuse, New York
This is a real long shot. I have recently learned that the parentage of my gr-grandfather is questionable. According to family information, his name is Ethelbert Livingston Emerson but I am unable to verify his natural parents since a birth certificate does not exist. All I know is that he was allegedly born in November of 1861 in Erie County, PA, a land patent was issued to him in the State of Wisconsin in 1900 under the name Ethelbert Emerson, and he died in Charles City, IA. I am questioning the legitimacy of his birth to Josiah & Harriet Emerson, since the obituary for Josiah does not include him in the list of children. In addition, he does not appear in a family portrait taken well after the time of his birth. I am thinking that perhaps his middle name of Livingston may be a clue to his actual parentage. Can anyone make any suggestions on how to pursue this? Linda Emerson Twain Harte, CA
Here's a multimedia site for the Library of Congress that might give you some leads to the information you are seeking: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amhome.html Click on Search Enter the word shipyard in the Search field You'll end up with about 326 hits and will enjoy looking through just about everyone! Hi Erie Friends! Am wondering if any of you who live in the Erie area, know the Harold Folts family. They may live in Fairview. From my Grandma Way's Scrapbook, I have a very old photo of that family as well as a birthday part announcement. I would like to turn these items over to their family. Any help will be appreciated! Barb
Hi Folks! I may have sent out a virus in my recent emails to you. I had it and did not know it. It is the WScript.kak worm. You can find the fix for it at this address: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/wscript.kakworm.html It only takes a couple of minutes to down load the fix and run it....I highly recommend that you take the time to do it. My virus protection did not catch it...It is not an attachment like most of them...it hides in the signature file, the website addresses that usually follow my name. There is also a file on Microsoft that will upgrade your Windows program so that these types of worms will not infect your computer in the future. You can get to it at the above address. Anyway, I am sorry for the inconvenience! Mike Wennin
Hi Bill, Ron's picture postcard view of the Murphys five and dime also shows two doors to the left the very beautiful but long gone Pulakos bldg. at 926 State St. Our Wingerter posters may be interested to know that the 1891 Erie City Directory shows the 3rd floor of this building as home to the Wingerter Bros. cigar manufactory. John Claridge's "Lost Erie" dates the structure to 1870 and the decorative facade to 1916. It was knocked down in 1964. Looking for any sources that might help resolve a dilemna that crosses state lines and three counties. My great great grandfather was William Bush, who married Margaret Greeley the younger sister of the famous editor Horace Greeley. On the 1850 census for Spring Creek, Warren county, PA he is listed as William O. Bush age 32, born VT. This gives him a birth year of 1817/18. Their marriage is mentioned in the Fredonia NY newspaper clipping as marriage of "Oscar" Bush to Margaret Greeley. This is definitely my guy, because their youngest child is definitely my great grandfather Arthur, who was 1 month old on the 1850 census. Problem. Family is not on Warren county 1860 census, but NY 1855, US 1860, NY 1865 and later censuses show his wife and children living in Clymer, Chautauqua county, NY. Where is William? Assumption: death or divorce prior to 1855. Next clue: The Beers History of Erie county, in the article on the Greeley family, ends with "Marguerite united herself to a writing master named Bush, from whom she parted." That's all, but it suggests divorce might be my answer to William's whereabouts after 1850. Next clue: Quite by accident I find a William Bush on the 1860 census for Elk Creek twp, Erie county, PA. This William is also born VT, age 42 also giving a birth year of 1817/18. Aha! think I. There he is, living with his parents (maybe), a new young wife half his age, and starting a new young family with son Darius age 2 months. This looks promising, and in the Erie Public Library I find a January 15, 1899 burial listing for him in the Hope Cemetery in Wellsburg (which as we know from earlier posts is in Elk Creek twp.). So my wife and I drive up from Florida to investigate in person and what do we find? The burial record actually shows William "R." Bush, not William "O." His headstone in the cemetery also shows William R. Bush. Age is correct, place of birth is correct. I haven't found any other William Bushes from Vermont of that age anywhere. So how do I prove whether this is my gggfather or not? Is it likely that the informant for the burial got his middle initial wrong? Is there a marriage or divorce record that might give me a clue? Where would I find an obituary from Wellsburg area for January 15, 1899? Anyone have any ideas?? Dan Parry in Jacksonville, Florida [email protected]
