    1. [PAERIE] Memory Box
    2. Linda & Mike Mounce
    3. I ran across an idea recently I wish I had known about when my mother was alive. Type up all the family questions you would like to have answered, cut into strips so that each strip of paper has one question. Place all the strips into a memory box (or jar), and give it along with a bound notebook and a pen to the oldest member of your family. Ask them to write the answer to the questions in the notebook over a period of time. It is not such an overwhelming task when it is taken one question at a time, and when all the questions are answered, you will have a notebook full of family memories, handwritten by a family member. The person who does the answering will have a wonderful time remembering all the events written down in the book. 3. Hi Ed, I hate to ask you to look up anything as you have been pretty over loaded with look-ups of late, as our web site is getting more traffic, and we are getting more joiners to our mailing list. I really need a look-up on this, though. I need a look-up on ANDREW J. MAYER. I found him listed on my Family Tree Maker CD # 354. It shows that he emigrated to Erie, PA in 1852. I believe he was naturalized in 1869. This is my GG grandfather, that is if it is the right Andrew Mayer. There were two of them in Erie at the same time. I am hoping your listing might show a age for him, and the place he emigrated from, in Germany. I really appreciate all your hard work ED! It is a labor of Love you are doing for us all!! Thanks again, Sue Moyer -- Sue Moyer [email protected]

    3. Hello Greg, in the book of emigrations of my hometown area I have found for the city of Maehringen, former Kingdom of Wuerttemberg: 1854 Johann Jacob Gross, 53 years old, with 2 children to America If you have more detailed information on Katherine I could lookup the file, as I'm actually working on this film at the LDS center. Kind regards, Ruediger -----Original Message----- From: Greg Hoppe [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, February 11, 2001 12:54 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [PAERIE] Hoppe and Gross from Germany & Erie County - 1870s Hi List, I have not posted my ancestor search for awhile so I will use this posting as a follow up to my post a few miniutes ago seeking information on my ggrandfather's naturalization. Any help anyone can offer would be welcomed. An excerpt from naturalization records in Erie County, Pa., dated 9/30/1879 says my ggrandfather, William H. Hoppe, arrived in the US in 1866 from Prussia, Germany. However, according to the 1900 Census, he arrived in 1868. The Census went on to say in 1869 he married Katherine Gross, also born in somewhere in Germany. They lived in Erie, PA for at least 8 years (1872-1879). After September 1879, and maybe as late as 1887, they moved to the northwest Indiana and Chicago areas. The 1900 Census said they had 7 children - one had died and 6 were living at the time of the census. Ida (12/21/1872), Amelia (9/1/1875) and Oscar 4/1879) apparently were born in Erie Co. Then there is a gap of 8 years before Julius was born in Hanna, Indiana (4/20/1887). Perhaps the two unnamed children were born first and were old enough to leave home prior to 1900 when the Census was taken. The two unnamed and one deceased children could also have been born in the 8 year gap between 1879 and 1887. I don't know much else - the town William came from in Prussia or the area Katherine came from, whether William and Katherine knew each other before arriving in the US, names of the other 2 children, was William the first, last or only Hoppe of his family to immigrate, in what US port did they disembark, etc. Descendants of William H. 3. Hello List, Please join Mike and me in welcoming Bob and Kathy Groner as the new township coordinators for Washington Township and Edinboro. Although they live in Lorain County, Ohio, their roots are in the Edinboro area and they travel back frequently (once the weather is nice). Bob and Kathy have provided a welcome introduction for the Washington Township page which I will be working on getting posted this evening, along with a nice list of links for the page. They also have some excellent web pages developed already, mostly specifically with their family in the area, but these will be linked as well. Check them out now at http://www.geocities.com/kathysangels/hamiltons.html . They have expressed some of the same desires to make the Erie County (PA) Genealogy web site a premier site for research, a goal expressed by Mike originally and strongly supported by myself, so we look forward to their participation in the site. Bob and Kathy are on e-mail at: [email protected] . Bill Klauk Co-Coordinator, Erie County (PA) Genealogy, USGenWeb/PAGenWeb Project Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA

    1. [PAERIE] Fraternal Organizations
    2. William Klauk
    3. Here is a good site to go to to get names of organizations from initials - http://www.gwgantiques.com/ffaq.htm - then use your favorite search engine to look further. On this list K of H stands for Knights of Honor, but I don't recognize it. Linda Emerson has already replied on the other two. In my summertime project of looking for unusual gravestone flagholders and posting pictures to the Zing album which one can get to by way of the Erie County Cemetery page, I often make reference to various pages that are linked from a site maintained by Joyce M. Tice at http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm who has a featured flagholder page and a number of links to other pages talking about the various organizations. I got my idea to start taking flagholder pictures from Joyce, and have contributed some to her pages. Joyce runs an independent site, but covers Bradford Co and Tioga Co in PA and Chemung Co in NY. As the subject was brought up, if anyone is visiting any cemeteries and sees any flagholders that look unusual and happen to have your digital camera with you (or regular camera for that matter although film costs money), please take a picture of it and send it too me (if you so desire - strictly voluntary). Most flags won't go in till Memorial Day so its not good flagholder hunting now. Bill Klauk Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA

    1. [PAERIE] Web Site Changes - Feb 11, 2001
    2. William Klauk
    3. Hello list, Following changes made to http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie for Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001. February 11, 2001 Added a new Early Marriage Notices page linked from the main home page under Special Features, based on information provided by Christy Hodges. Added 4 more 1890 Veterans Schedules and linked from the Census page only at this time. These were contributed by Barb Seyler and are fairly small, but important to anyone researching Albion, Springfield area, Washington Township and the Erie Co Almshouse. In the process of testing the four new 1890 Vets pages, I discovered that a bad link to Barb Seyler's e-mail which I thought I had corrected in all places, somehow had been reintroduced. I corrected it on 6 pages that I found. Barb's e-mail starts with ropetracer so if anyone clicks on a mail link on any of the pages for Barb, and you don't see ropetracer, etc. then please let me know off list so I can correct it. Also, I didn't add a mail link to Christy Hodges on the Early Marriage Notices page as I understand from Mike that her e-mail is bouncing so she must still be converting over. Christy, please contact me if you are back on line. That's it for this weekend. As I keep promising, more in the works.
