    1. [PAERIE] Web Site Changes for Erie Genealogy
    2. William Klauk
    3. Hello List, Reminder - Rootsweb will be down for an unspecified time on Friday starting about 11AM EST for maintenance of system. Following changes have been made to http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie : February 20-22, 2001 Added new cemetery page for Saint Mary of Czestochowa Polish National Catholic Church Cemetery, which was a 'lost' cemetery rededicated on 21 Feb 2001 by the City of Erie. Added a new feature page to Faces of Erie County - Wescott Siblings of Albion. February 17-19, 2001 Added two personal web page links to Faces of Erie County for two Erie County families. Added some naturalization record guidelines to the Courthouse & Vital Records page as submitted by Gaylene Banister. Now for some details of the cemetery posting - The Erie Times-News carried an article in Thursday's paper concerning the rededication of the Polish National Catholic Cemetery on Merline Avenue in south Erie. Please go directly to http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/cemeteries/PNACemErie.htm and read the story of this cemetery as contributed by Dick Tefft. Dick also provided the photo of the memorial stone. I would like to repeat a portion of the article that Dick submitted for posting concerning the effort of the Erie Society for Genealogical Research (ESGR) - "The Erie Society for Genealogical Research is now heading up the effort to find the names of as many of those burials as possible in order to get all the burials identified on that memorial. If anyone knows of any other burials there please let ESGR know by writing to them at PO Box 1403, Erie, PA 16512. If it can be verified that a person is buried there and not listed on that memorial, they will see to it that it gets added." 2. Hello All, I am looking for a marriage record from around 1866-1870 William and Ada Douglas(s). And a birth record for Edith Douglas(s) around 1872-1873. They lived in Erie City. Can someone help me with this? Thanks Linda

    1. Re: [PAERIE] Death Certificate
    2. If it is particularly a certificate you are after, you are out of luck. Pennsylvania did not require the reporting of deaths until 1906. Therefore, no death certificates before then. If you are looking simply to document a death there are other sources: the courthouse in Erie has some death records 1892-1906. The Erie Society for Genealogical Research has an index to births, marriages and deaths printed in Erie newspapers 1822-1906. Another source is church records. Wills and other estate papers can offer clues. If simple documentation is what you want, respond to the list. I am sure other people can offer more ideas. Janet - Delaware

    2. Gaylene Kerr Banister
    3. Barbara, I am also posting this to the list since there may be others who would like to obtain their ancestors' naturalization papers. The process is very simple. You can write, call or visit the Erie Co. Courthouse. Naturalization records are available for 1825-1940. I don't remember exactly what it cost, but when I visited there last summer, I obtained the records for 3 or 4 of my husband's ancestors and the *total* cost was something less than $10. The lady who works in the naturalization records is extremely helpful and very good:-) It took only a few minutes for her to locate and copy all the records I requested. Erie City & County Naturalization Records Microfilm Department, Room #108 Erie County Courthouse, 140 West 6th Street Erie, PA 16501 814-451-6393 WATTS Line 1-800-352-0026 (from anywhere in PENNSYLVANIA -- can be used for any number within the Erie County Courthouse. Ask for department or extension number). Hope this helps. Good luck with your research! Gaylene Kerr Banister Houston, TX [email protected] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~banister/index.html

    1. [PAERIE] The saga of Margaret LOWRY and her 10 sons, born Ireland to Erie Co PA.
    2. Dolores Davidson
    3. LOWRY FAMILY; As these families were among the early and prominent settlers of Erie Co PA, and as several of them removed to this, (Chautauqua Co NY) where some of the descendants still remain, a sketch of them is here given; GEORGE Lowry of Scotch descent, born in the North of Ireland in the County of DOWN, where he died in 1770; He had 10 sons, all living at the time of his death, the youngest about 18 months old, His first born , a daughter, died in childhood; The names of the sons were SAMUEL, HUGH, JOHN, ROBERT, JAMES, ANDREW, WILLIAM, GEORGE, ALEXANDER AND MORROW Samuel and Hugh, came to America, exploring for the family, in 1774. Hugh returned to report, Samuel remained and settled in Columbia County PA where he died in 1826. The MOTHER< MARGARET LOWRY, and her sons, determined to emigrate to the land of freedom and settle together; They had perpetual leases of land for which they paid the annual rent of $1.50 per acre. They left James and William to sell their leases; and the Mother and 7 sons embarked at Belfast, for the state of Delaware May 1, 1776 and landed at Wilmington Delaware July 5, 1776. William came in 1787 and James in 1788. The Mother and her 10 sons, settled near each other in Northumberland County PA. Some of the brothers, removed to other places in the vicinity and were married. Hugh, after his return from Ireland, settled in Union Co PA had a large family and died there. In 1794, the mother and her sons proposed to remove to some new country where they could form a colony and live on contigious lands. Having seen advertisements offering to settlers cheap land, on the shore of Lake Erie, they formed a compact and appointed James and George to go and explore and report back. In the spring of 1795, they went through the wilderness to Lake Erie, and down to 16 mile creek, and concluded to locate there. The land had been offered by the state to settlers in tracts of 400 acres , they made a measuring cord of bark, and measured off a number of 400 acre tracts, and in each tract, built a shanty, and they procured, in behalf of Lowry's Colony, from Gen. REES, agent of the state, certificates if 13 tracts at and about 16 Mile Creek; James and George reported back in the fall, and all were pleased ; the family numbered the tracts and drew lots for them, In March, 1796 the Colony of 8 brothers, JOHN, ROBERT,JAMES, ANDREW, WILLIAM, GEORGE, ALEXANDER and MORROW, and 4 other men left Northumberland for what they considered the "Land of Promise" (much more detail but too large for this) Of the LOWRY Brothers, Only 2 are believed to have come to Chautauqua. George came to Mayville in 1808, He raised a number of daughters, and 1 son;named James B. , who was clerk of the County; George removed to Illinois, where son James had gone and died there; MORROW, Lowry, father of Morrow B. LOWRY of Erie Co PA, came to Mayville in 1811, and removed to PA in 1813 or 1814; HUGH, another son of another of the 10 brothers, born in PA came to Westfield, where he was for several years in the mercantile business and removed to PA where he died; Nathaniel LOWRY son of Alexander, one of the 10 sons, settled in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co NY; the mother of the LOWRY SONS died in MAYVILLE in 1812 Nathaniel A. LOWRY came to Jamestown, Chautauqua Co NY in 1833; His father was Alexander LOWRY, 1 of 10 brothers who emigrated from Ireland; Most of whom were early settlers in ERIE COUNTY PA ; Nathaniel A was for many years a merchant and promiinent citizen and business man in Jamestown and acquired a large property. In November, 1844 he was stabbed by an assailant with intent to kill, the wound being for some time, considered mortal; The perpetrator of the deed was convicted and made to suffer the penalty of law,. Mr LOWRY was born Oct. 22, 1805 and died in Jamestown, Feb 23, 1852; His sons, William H., Augustus N, and Alexander M, reside in Jamestown. Source for the above data Andrew W Young, History of Chautauqua Co NY 1875 Morrow B. LOWRY (Son of Morrow, b Ireland), of Erie Co. PA married to Sarah Ann FLETCHER,8 b. 1. [PAERIE] Personal research and information providing
    2. William Klauk
    3. Hello list, I have had several e-mail messages recently directed only to me that is prompting this e-mail. I am in a position to post to the web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie any information concerning Erie County (PA) Genealogy that is submitted to me, as long as there is not a copyright issue. If the information is not posted, then it probably has not been supplied to me. I am NOT in a position to research for the information, or to do lookups. I will attempt to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge, but in most cases the questions are best directed to the list directly and/or through placing a query in the GenConnect system. With regard to cemetery information, if anyone has contact information for cemeteries listed on our cemetery index page, please provide that information so it can be posted. As stated on that page, there are about 30 more known cemeteries and burial grounds than what are on the list, and I am happy to accept information about them and post it if it is provided. I do not have information about cemeteries, unless it is posted (or something that I just gained knowledge about). I have recently joined the Erie Society for Genealogical Research (ESGR) and will be working with them in trying to make cemetery information more readily available, or to list where that information can be found. In some cases cemetery readings have been done in the past which MIGHT be made available for posting, or if there is any kind of 'permission' issue, then I will try to post where a person might go for the information. For example, a recent book published by one of the Fairview organizations lists all burials in Fairview Cemetery. I don't have the details of this book, but when I do I will post where one might write to purchase a copy of the book. Naturally, all of this is not going to get done overnight. My job of posting information can best be enhanced by the continued support of those volunteers who have been providing information in the past, and from those of you out there who may have information that has not been submitted. One additional note about copyright and reprints. It is crystal clear that any material prior to 1924 is free and clear of any copyright restrictions and may be openly transcribed, posted, copied, etc. When a pre-1924 book is reprinted, the original words and pictures of the original author can not be copyrighted. However, any new material or changes to the original document does fall under copyright. Usually, when an old book is reprinted by a historical or genealogical organization it is done so as a method of enhancing their treasury so that they may stay in business. Sometimes they only break even. Sometimes it is reprinted for entirely different reasons. But there is a fine line between making some of this information readily available on the Internet, versus making one go to a library or purchase a book. To avoid issues, if anyone is going to submit information from a reprinted document, first of all, DO NOT take the information from the reprint, but only from an original pre-1924 document. Then second, please coordinate with me so I may determine from the organization doing the reprint as to why they did a reprint, so we can all walk that fine line. I am still looking for individuals who would like to assist on the township level on the site as a township coordinator. One does not have to live there, only have some interest in the township and a little knowledge about the township. One does not need to know anything about web pages. Open townships - Conneaut, Elk Creek, Franklin, McKean, Greene, Greenfield, Amity, Wayne, North East, Lawrence Park, City of Erie, City of Corry. I am working with people on Springfield and Harborcreek and hope to announce something soon. 1. [PAERIE] Updates for this past week on the Web site
    2. William Klauk
    3. Most changes this past week have been cosmetic, working on the census page, correcting several 'broken' and wrong links. I did anoounce Kathy & Bob Groner as Washington township Coordinator, but don't believe these other posted changes were announced: February 12-16, 2001 Added Bob & Kathy Groner as Washington Township Coordinators, redid the Washington Township page, adding their welcome letter and several Edinboro links. Added a second version of the 1840 Pensioners Schedule, reposted with permission of the author. Reposted a 1890 Naval Schedule found elsewhere on the Internet, with permission of Dee Davidson. Posted a 1970 era cemetery reading from Herb Kinney of the stones in the commemorative area of the Waterford Cemetery. These were stones that were recovered prior to 1930 from an abandoned 'pioneer' cemetery in Waterford. Transcribed and posted 'The Michael Hare Story" from the 'story plaque' in Waterford Cemetery. Several other cosmetic changes, particularly to the census index page. February 11, 2001 Added a new Early Marriage Notices page linked from the main home page under Special Features, based on information provided by Christy Hodges. Added 4 more 1890 Veterans Schedules and linked from the Census page only at this time. These were contributed by Barb Seyler and are fairly small, but important to anyone researching Albion, Springfield area, Washington Township and the Erie Co Almshouse. February 9, 2001 Added 1860 Venango Township census index. About 350 names. Linked from Venango Township page and from Census page.
