    1. [PAERIE] Death Cert/Census Errors
    2. My grandfather, whom I never knew, was born in ERIE, PA in 1857, at least according to a recently acquired Death Certificate from MI where he died Nov. 1 1940. Early census records (1870 & 1880) place him in Indiana. On 1870 census it states he was b in IN & parents in PA & on other census it reads he was b in OH & I parent in PA & other in OH. On census in 1920 & 30 each one of his children have him born in one or the other state. Most say PA. One even reads he was b in the Irish Free State. All these records are documented & is the same family. I know census records can have errors, but how often is an error made on a death certificate as to Birth Place? Also, the DC had his parents as unknown. Only two Harris families in Erie County between 1850-1860 I find is a James & a William. James already has been ruled out. Very Confusing. Any help and/or suggestions will be appreciated. Richard Harris

    2. Steve, Have you looked in the census records? When they ask for relationship it just might say adopted daughter. I had that happen in a 1910 census. We knew the baby was adopted but by looking up the adoptive family in the census I also learned the natural father was born in Ohio... a huge clue in finding out his identity (along with the other info we had.) -- Elissa in Pittsburgh On Sun, 5 Jan 2003 01:44:43 -0500 "Erie Co Genealogy" <ErieCoGenie@worldnet.att.net> writes: > mailto:swgealy@zoominternet.net - can anyone help Steve with an > answer? Genealogy Question Hi, Bill I tried e-mailing Greg Spinks with this question, since the family I'm looking into lived in Wayne Twp, but apparently his e-mail address no longer matches the one shown on the Wayne Twp. page because it was returned undeliverable. Anyway, my question is a general question: Can you tell me where I can obtain 1870's adoption information for Erie Co.? My great grandmother, b. 1872, was adopted and lived in Sparta Twp., Crawford Co. I think her birth parents may have been Robert and Mary Brooks, who lived in Wayne Twp. Erie Co. in the 1870s and 1880s (page no. 26 of the Wayne Twp 1880 Census). The dates and fact that they immigrated from England all seem to work out, but I'm not sure where to go to get any adoption information that could confirm my suspicions. Would the Clerk of Courts at the Erie County Courthouse have this information? Thanks for taking the time to maintain the Erie Co. genealogy web site. Its dedicated people like you who make research for folks like me a lot easier. And thank you for any advice you can give me about Erie Co. adoption records. Respectfully, Steve Gealy Harmony, PA

    3. Marian: First, were all the children buried the same place? If place is different than where you checked, try other cemeteries. Second, Try some of the older Catholic churches in Erie --they might have a record. Social security death index? If you know the county for sure, they can do a 10-year search (I think it costs $25, but not positive) for death. Check at courthouse for property ownership if they owned their own home --it might give you a general year if the deed was transferred. Were they members of any clubs? Hope these ideas give you a direction (and answers) Good luck!!! Joyce Anthony Erie, PA

    3. Perhaps I spoke too soon.... and maybe I answered my own question... I double checked my records and was missing the 1930 census. Well, I found Andrew and Antoinette Skowronski, aged 84 and 77 respectively, living in Venango twp, Erie Co. So in 1910 they were in the City on East 14th... in 1920 they were on Wayne... 1930 - Venango Twp., 1940 back in the city on East 8th.... do you suppose a 90 year old couple would have moved back out of the city into the country once again??? They were farmers. Maybe this explains the lack of obit at Blasco, and them NOT being at Trinity/Calvary. Perhaps I should check out St. Boniface??? Just a little brainstorming here. Thanx for listening. Marian Matha-Fromknecht [RaveledRoots@post.com] Erie, Pennsylvania, USA

    3. Hello and happy New Year to all!!!! Thanx to everyone re: my courthouse/marriage records queries. I was able to go back yet another generation and found a new cousin! But here I am once again... My new brick wall... Skowronski::::::: My father-in-law's maternal grandfather was Andrew Skowronski. Immigrated in 1878. Born 1848/50, depending on which document you go by... I have found him in most of the censuses and in the city directories up to the year 1940... after that he and his wife are no longer listed. My father-in-law swears that he didn't pass away until he was 95 or 96, and he died here in Erie. He passed away before his wife, Antoinette. I ventured to guess that his wife moved in with a child; hence her not being listed, but my FIL says that she lived in her house 'til the day she died. Anyway... that is not my problem. I tried looking for their obits.... none listed. Not for Andrew or Antoinette. I found 4 obits of their 8 children... Why wouldn't they be listed then??? I called Trinity/Calvary Cemetery to see if they were interred there as they are Catholic, there is no record. I even looked for variant spellings. What am I missing??? I'm afraid to send for the death record as I don't have a year, and cant even find the obit. My next hope is to hopefully find a will. I just cant help wondering what I'm missing. FIL says his mother was always changing her name because she was ashamed of being Polish. I'm beginning to wonder if this was a problem with Andrew as well... Any suggestions as to where to go now would be greatly appreciated! With MANY thanks - ONCE again! Marian Matha-Fromknecht [RaveledRoots@post.com] Erie, Pennsylvania, USA

    3. Hello List, Just a quick note to let everyone know that I am here and well, but in the middle of rebuilding my PC to give to my Mother as I accidently murdered hers. I am getting a new one around 1/7 but will not be reading much mail or doing any site maintenance till my new PC is hooked up. Hope everyone had a good holiday season and best to everyone in 2003. If anyone has material to send to me, please hold it for a week or so. Any material sent to date is on this PC, although it may end up at my Mother's house - she celebrates her 81st birthday on 1/3 so I absolutely have to get this PC to her right away. 3. 1910 census: Adam Gutowski, 33, Erie Co., NY (b. Russia) Alexander " , 35, Queens, NY (b. Russia) Joseph " , 38, Middlesex, NJ (b. Russia) There are more of these same given names, as well as several Stanleys around the country, some born in Germany. Usually describe themselves as Russian-Polish or German-Polish. Border may have been ill-defined or changeable in their day. You probably need to study the 1910, 1900 and maybe 1880 censuses very carefully. The latter one is available at familysearch.org and there are several Gutowskis listed, but none as heads of households. Good luck! 1. Re: [PAERIE] Margaret Lowry Clan article posted
    2. This reminds me that anyone who has an ancestor in ANY of the 26 western Pennsylvania counties before 31 Dec 1810 is eligible to join the First Families of Western PA. This lineage society is administered by the Western PA Genealogical Society (www.wpgs.org) and gives you a certificate and a pin when your application is approved. You have to provide sources for your lineage back to your ancestor and also prove that they were resident before the 1810 date. Easy enough if they were on the 1810 census (or before). The other benefit of joining such a group is the process you go through to do the application. So you think you have great-grandpa's death date nailed down? Digging out the proof might help you get organized and realize little discrepancies in the data. It sure is fun to see if you can do it. See the website above for an application. -- Elissa in Pittsburgh where there is no snow, just ice right now. 3. Merry Christmas to all on the PAErie mail list, I have just posted an original article researched and written by Beth Simmons titled "The Lowry Clan" to the Erie Co (PA) Genealogy Website. This article and an abbreviated descendancy chart outlines Margaret Lowry and her 10 sons who were pre-1800 settlers to Erie Co (PA). Due to conflicts with the PA Population Company, most of the family was evicted from the settled land, and some, including Margaret, moved elsewhere. Margaret died in Chatauqua Co in 1812. Hopefully someone will find this material interesting and helpful. Beth Simmons has also provided a Christmas Greeting which is posted to the Harbor Creek Township page, along with a valuable index of Harbor Creek names listed in Beers, Nelson, Reed and Miller Histories of Erie Co. I am off to church and just waiting for the snow to fall. Bill Klauk Volunteer County Coordinator, Erie Co (PA) Genealogy, USGenWeb/PAGenWeb project http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie

Info I found via interenet (and not proven) is that she died 1884 in Union City, Erie County, PA. Also found is that she was born 1793 in Port Bryon, Cayuga County, NY. I am trying to prove or disprove this. Do obit notices exist for this time period in PA? How about death certificates? Is there anyone else working on this line? Their children were: Jerome B. 2. Friends, I have the following notices of a death: Chenango American Newspaper, Norwich, NY, Feb 18, 1875 "In Girard, Pa., Nov. 13th, 1874, Mrs. Lucinda Loyd, aged 74 years, formerly of Coventry". Erie Weekly Gazzette, Dec 3, 1874 (another note says Dec 1): "LLOYD - In Girard, Nov 13th, Mrs. Lucinda Lloyd, of Coventry, N. Y., in the 74th year of her age". I'm looking for Lucida's grave. She is my g-g-grandmother Lloyd. Another mystery is what was she doing in Girard? She may have been just passing through, but the Norwich newspaper says "formerly of Coventry". On the other hand, the Erie newspaper says "of Coventry, N. Y.". I will appreciate any help or information on Lucinda. If is is helpful, her maiden name was Wright and her husband was Jesse Lloyd, who died ca 1850. As far as we know, she lived all her life in Central N.Y. and we just don't know why she went to Girard. Thanks for your time. Bruce Lloyd, Dryden, NY

    1. [PAERIE] Cemetery
    2. Since we are talking of cemeteries, I know where there was one when I was a small child living in North East. If no one told you of it you would never find it. It may not even be there anymore but when we were little we used to walk up the hill to see the old cemetery. I'm not too sure on the name of the roads since I haven't been there for 25 years and it is 50 years since I lived there. If you take Rt 89 out of North East heading north to the lake cross Rt5 (I think) and keep going down to the lake, just before you reach the lake there is a road on the left that goes up a hill and curves. It was a dead end when I was last there (1978) but at the end of the road there was a small wooded area and then a field, right on the edge of the woods were several tombstones. I know at that time there were at least 10 or 15 maybe more but like I said it has been a lot of years. Karen in FL
