Hello Erie Co (PA) Genealogy list members, February is quickly coming to a close, and I am slowly but surely getting a lot of back logged material finally posted. The site was reindexed earlier on Monday evening with 541 pages now included in the index. While on the PICO site (the company that provides the search engine), I noted that there are on average 1000 searches on the web site per month, with only about 15 to 20 percent not finding any data. Here are the latest updates (I have gone back to Dec 1, 2002, to pick up material I failed to include on a previous update): February 24, 2003 Modified the St. Thomas Cemetery page to include additional data supplied by Ginny Eakin concerning the MULLEN surname. Added a new feature page for the Corry Class of 1913 visit to the White House. This page is a picture with names on back, which have been transcribed and included. This is another in a whole series of feature pages from material on loan from Teresa Hughes. This page has been linked to the Schools Index page and the City of Corry page. These later pages were updated to reflect 2003 copyright. Added a page including the Leboeuf Township Plat Map as submitted by Beth Simmons. This feature page has been linked to the LeBoeuf Township page, and to the Old Maps Index page. These later pages were also updated to reflect 2003 copyright. Slight modification was made on the LeBoeuf Twp page. February 19-20, 2003 Added a new feature page to the Faces of Erie County. This is several pages that have been scanned by Bill Klauk from the June 1923 edition of the Hammermill Bond, the employee magazine of the Hammermill Paper Company. This was the 25th anniversary of the founding. The page has been linked to the City of Erie page, and to the Faces of Erie County page. February 14, 2003 Added a new feature article submitted by Evelyn Baker titled Charter of the Springfield Telephone Co (1906). This page was linked to the Misc. Subjects Index page, and the Springfield Twp page. February 13, 2003 Added a new Newspapers page from information provided over a year ago from Kathy Groner. This page is a three page extract from the Gordon Law Newspapers Index. Most surnames are Hamilton, but other H names are also included. February 10, 2003 Added a new feature page to Erie County Land Records. This page is a newspaper ad from the January 17, 1850, Erie Gazette, for land for sale that had been a part of the Moravian Land Grant. The article has been transcribed and submitted by Evelyn Baker, and is also linked on the Springfield Township page. February 6, 2003 Note that ESGR has updated the City of Erie Vital Records Research page and submission form. The link from the Courthouse and Vital Records page has not changed. February 4, 2003 Beth Simmons has provided a complete revision to her Lowry Clan submission. The Family Tree portion, titled Descendants of George and Margaret Lowry, was put into a separate web page. Both sections of the Lowry Clan story were uploaded. The Family History Index page, and the Harbor Creek Township page, were both updated to reflect the changes. Updated the Guest Book to start a new book for 2003. Several January entries had been posted and these were entered into the new current Guest Book. Archived all 2002 entries into a 2002 Guest Book, and entered the link to this 2002 book on the current 2003 Guest Book. February 2, 2003 Changed the Homepage to reflect the new year and updated the Welcome Letter. Due to the new PC and limited time, there is no formal theme for February. Updated the Copyright Statement to reflect 2003. January, 2003 Due to a personal computer upgrade and change of operating systems to Windows XP, there were no additions of changes to the Website during January. December 25, 2002 Fixed a broken link to the Warren County USGenWeb site. December 24, 2002 Added a new feature Family History page for the Lowry Clan, as written and submitted by Beth Simmons. Although the Lowry family settled in both North East and Harbor Creek Townships, the page has only been linked from the Family History Index page and from the in Harbor Creek Township page. Beth also provided an image of an old time Christmas Card which has been posted to the Harbor Creek Township page. Another submission from Beth Simmons was also linked to both Harbor Creek Township, and to the Family Histories Index page. This feature page is an index of all Harbor Creek names found in the four most popular Histories of Erie County. December 20, 2002 Added a new Scouting feature page from information submitted by Barb Seyler. This article is a short biography of Clarence Seyler, a pioneer in the Erie Cub Scout movement. December 19, 2002 Added a link on the Old Maps index page to the NEGenealogy PA maps. These maps show the various counties in Pennsylvania over the years. Added a new school page from a picture submitted by Betty Matteson Rhodes of the 1929 class at the McNair School. Linked this page from the Schools Index page, and from the Venango Township page. Added another school page from a picture submitted by P Nolan of a 1905 Class at Erie High School. Linked this page from the City of Erie page, and from the Schools Index page. December 18, 2002 Made corrections to the LeBoeuf Township cemetery listings on the Cemetery Index page. December 17, 2002 Added a new feature cemetery page for the Drury Family Cemetery in Girard township as contributed by Dick Tefft. This page is linked to the Girard Township page and to the Cemetery Index page. Updated the Girard Township page to list all cemeteries from the Cemetery Index page. December 13, 2002 Updated the Pico Search Engine Index for the site. There are now 528 pages included in the search. Updated all email addresses listed on Copyright page. December 12, 2002 Updated the County Courthouse and Vital Records page to include a link to the ESGR page which announces that Erie City vital records from about 1875 to about 1908 may be researched by ESGR. Updated Amity Township page to include a new email address for Bimmy Urso, the township coordinator. Updated Springfield Township page to include a newly scanned photo of the East Springfield Christian Church. December 9, 2002 Updated Dee's Trivia page and the Misc Everything Goes Here page with an additional submission from Dee Davidson concerning the sinking of the steamboat 'Erie' in the mid 1800s. Posted a new Land Records page titled 1819 Tax Assessment submitted many months ago by Evelyn Baker, but just now being posted. December 1, 2002 Updated Homepage Welcome letter to reflect carry over of the Church theme with most time being spent in catch up. In other news, the Erie Times-News for Sunday, February 23, 2003, ran a feature article in the City & Region section titled The Mystery of Snake Hollow Cemetery. This small cemetery in Greenfield Township is included in our listings, but little is known about the cemetery. Until next update, Bill Klauk Volunteer County Coordinator, Erie Co (PA) Genealogy Website, USGenWeb/PAGenWeb project http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie

If anyone has access to any Erie City directories, I needed info on the following: Between 1940 and 1946: Any listings for a William John LEE, a Valerie M. SORGER, Valerie LEE, Valerie FARBO. I believe Valerie married Carmen R. Farbo around 1945. She may have been married to William LEE somewhere between 1940-45. Valerie's father was Frank SORGER, so she may have been still living at home during any or some of that time. Most important is finding out who lived in the household with any of these people during this time period. I found her in the 1930 census, but I need more recent info. Thanks! Laurel
If anyone happens to have access to marriage records in Erie Co, PA and/or Chautauqua County, NY I was looking for any record of a marriage of William John LEE to Valerie (or Valery) M. SORGER. It would be between 1940-1945. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Laurel Anderson
Although I don't know anything about Hardin DeVitt, the mention of Hammermill brings back memories. I don't recall ever having seen the mill, as we lived out in Fairview west of Erie, but our summer neighbor was Norman Wilson; at the time he was [I think] Chairman of the Board and/or CEO. I believe my dad said that Mr. Wilson had worked his way up the ladder after starting at Hammermill when in his teens -- a real "Horatio Alger" story! In reply to Bob Phillips message, the High Schools in Erie in 1920 were Central (the old Erie High School), I believe East, and the brand new Academy, in addition to the Catholic Cathedral Prep. I have extracts from the 1920 Central High School yearbook which I was never able to get posted online. It includes 8th to 10th grade classes from Gridley which was called Gridley High School, but only had what today would be intermediate high school classes. There is a "Hunter, Robt." listed on the page for the Class of 24, but it is not clear if he was at Gridley, or at Central itself, which also had these lower classes. My maternal grandfather went to Tech when it was an all boys school... but it used to be on State if I remember correctly (well I know it wasn't always on Cherry... I have his yearbook stashed away somewhere... Although, he was born in 1919, so it was sometime after your Robert attended school...
