    3. Hi all, THis is just an FYI if you should visit any Rootsweb sites beginning on Friday. I assume it will effect the mailing lists as well. FYI- PA-Roots is back up and running. Some of the URL's have changed slightly so you should start at the link in my signature block to find the county site you're interested in. Some of the Query boards are still being transitioned, but I should have them fixed tomorrow. Hopefully you'll notice the improved performance. 1. Re: [PAELK] Elk County records
    2. GJ & SJ
    3. Marriage records in the courthouse of Elk Co., PA start around 1885, but the very first book or two of marriages is kind of useless unless you are sure that is the person you are seeking because no parent's names are given. This situation is remedied after two or three marriage liscense books, but it would have been nice to have the parents listed for the early marriage records. There are supposed to be some marriage records from around the years 1851-1852 or so at the courthouse, but no one seems to know where they are. They were published once in a Western PA Genealogical Society bulletin, but I don't have that info readily available. I plan to see if I can find them when I can find the time to get to the courthouse. There are only a year or two of these records though, and they are probably incomplete. Truthfully, there are virtually no records from the early days of the Kersey settlement-- no cemetery records, no birth records, no death records, no obituaries. The only things you might find useful in that respect are deeds, and wills or intestate records if there are no wills. Wills and deeds, if recorded before 1843, will be in Clearfield County. After 1843, they will be in the Elk County courthouse. I have never gone to St. Boniface to look through their records, and I am not at all sure that one would be allowed. Joan told me that "you won't be able to read that old writing." Little does she know that I have become quite adept at deciphering the seemingly undecipherable! ----- Original Message ----- From: Sharon Dani and JP <amuckdjp@sympatico.ca> To: <PAELK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 19, 2001 1:01 PM Subject: [PAELK] Elk County reords > Dear Sherry J., > How far back do marriage records in Elk County go? > And if the marriage was in Kersey (Fox Twsp.) in, what may have still been Clearfield County at the time, where would the marriage records be? > Also, do you ever get over to St. Boniface to do any records searches? 3. This is too early for there to be a marriage liscense at the courthouse, so your best bet would be to try to write to St. Boniface and see if they have anything on it. They didn't start to record marriages at the county level until 1885. 1. Re: [PAELK] Naturalization
    2. GJ & SJ
    3. Naturalization papers are kept in the Prothonotary office of the courthouse. Given that Andrew Hau apparently came here during the time that Fox Twp, Elk Co., PA was being pulled from Clearfield, the papers could be in either courthouse. That is, provided that he did not pledge intent to naturalize in some other PA county. Centreville IS Kersey. They changed the name of the town at some point in the 1880's. McKean county shouldn't be involved, unless they moved to that county. When I was fresh out of high school, I worked at a local nursing home called Elk Haven. We have a man named Bill Hau there for awhile, and he owned a bar on Skyline Drive which runs down in front of my house. It has been known by various names over the years-- Hau's Tavern, and more recently, the Skyline Inn. Could this have been old Andrew Hau's original hotel? ----- Original Message ----- From: tomordot <tomordot@email.msn.com> To: <PAELK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 8:13 PM Subject: [PAELK] Naturalization > Naturalization Papers > > I am looking for the Bavarian town of origin for Andrew Hau (1st) b.
