He was a central figure in the old Second Avenue gang that included Johnny Kerr, David and Donald Hoy, Alvin Haley, Jr. etc. Torrence always kidded about having a copy of the book "Tom Swift and His Electric Grandmother". In the late 1930's we had an interest in things electronic and were building vacuum tube radios. T.Q. was a neighborhood source of technical guidance information. I've heard by the grapevine that he made a collection of automobile license plates that was quite unusual. Lloyd Yost.

I would like to thank and commend all of you on this list for remaining sane and calm during last week's insanity and not sending every chain foreward that was sent to you to the list. The Elk list was just about the only list that I was on that didn't descend into chaos and petty bickering following last week's tragedy. One of the lists I was on had an absolute meltdown, with some of the listers really insulting some of the other listers. It was very sad. Since Rootsweb archives all of these messages, they must be dealing with TONS of posts that are not history/genealogy related and are only going to eat up bandwidth on the Rootsweb servers. In fact, they stopped archiving messages last Tuesday, so I wonder if they are going to try to sort through what is pertinent and what is not? I don't know if all of you know this, but Rootsweb has set up a board for messages of condolence and reflection at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=an&p=usa-tragedy.mourning So thank you all again for staying focused during this difficult time and allowing this list to remain an Elk County Genealogy and History list. Hi Listers, We'll be heading up to Elk County on/about 8 - 10 October 2001. Researching my maternal line. Two things I want to accomplish: 1. Find grave site of George Madison and family - hopefully still where I was told they were, in the Mt Zion Cemetery, Caledonia. (also was told that church burned down years ago). 2. Find any/all documents relating to this family at the county court house and Historical Society Needing to know if the court house and historical society will be open and what their hours are (8 Oct is Columbus Day, celebrated). I have not been able to bring up the Historical Society web site for weeks now. http://users.penn.com/~elkhist/ Since I spent most summers when I was growing up in Ridgway it will be like going home. My Grandparents, Russell T & Irene Madison, used to live at 218 Metoxet Street. Both have since passed on. Does West Penn Power (if it still exists), where my Grandfather worked and retired (office on the St Mary's road from Ridgway), allow visitors and would they have any personnel records still on file? Unless another motel/hotel has moved into Ridgway, we'll probably be staying at the motel at the top of Boot Jack hill.
