You know I would never post a virus warning to my mailing list's unless I thought it was important. I hope you all remember around the middle of last year or so when the Badtrans32 virus was making it's rounds? Well, it's back as a different strain this time. Due to the nature and the way it was spread, this particular virus hit the Rootsweb mailing list pretty hard, so I am passing information on to my lists that was sent to me in the hope that it can be prevented from spreading. I have personally received this virus at least four times so far over the holiday, and I can tell you that your best defense is NOT TO OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS, even from people you know unless you can verify that they sent you an attachment. This virus is not spread THROUGH Rootsweb's mailing lists, but attaches itself to unread mail in an infected computer's inbox, and sends itself back out. Thus, some of the messages MAY have subject lines that are pertinent to the Rootsweb mailing list that you may be subscribed to. It also alters the person's e-mail address by adding a slash so that it bounces back to you and you can't notify the person that they are sending a virus. Removing the slash from the e-mail addy fixes the address so that it no longer bounces. Info as follows: Dear All: The message below is from Sue on the TSL list and she states the situation quite clearly. The difficulty is that the attachment may not show or there is a false extension. It appears to have xxx.doc or xx.txt but the real extension ( .scr.or .exe) is 59 spaces to the right. So even if you get a email from a trusted source ( me or others) and there is no message etc, be very careful. It will also show about 29 or 30k as the size of the message. So that is a dead giveaway in that there is 30 k of message and it doesn't show up anyway . Many of you will remember the "badtrans" virus last August. People seemed to wise-up about that one, but now there is another _strain_ of the badtrans virus called W32.Badtrans.B@mm and I have received quite a few of them ... some from current list members. I am Bcc'ing those list members whose computers are infected, so if you receive a copy of this message without the [TSL] prepend, please quickly go to the link below to learn how to clean the virus out of your computer. You will NEVER receive a virus through the list, but if listmembers get infected, their computer may send you the virus, which _may_ have a list subject line. My Norton "anti-virus" program is doing a very good job of detecting, but Norton doesn't seem to have a complete write-up about this one. They do mention the file extensions etc., but they don't mention how the email will appear or whether there is a message or not. My experience has been that only one has arrived with a subject line from a list post, the others simply have a "Re:" in the subject line. I have seen no message (but maybe Norton is deleting that too) Most of those I have received have come from Australian or New Zealand email addresses, so they must have gotten it first. Also, I don't know whether my Norton is doing this (the write-up doesn't say) but the email addresses of the sending computers is altered by having an underline character preceeding the address, such as <_emailaddress@optusnet.com.au> PLEASE remember to make sure you have up-to-date Anti Virus software, AND remember to update the Virus definitions regularly. There are a lot of good Anti Virus programs out there (I use Norton) but they aren't any good unless you update them. You can read about this virus and how to remove it from your system on the Norton Symantec site ... http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.b@mm.html

Sherry, I certainly agree with you completely, that is why I depend on more than one piece of documentation to try to connect two members of a family. It is good search in as many places as possible to try to connect links. If you have the same family in four consecutive census reports...with the correct ages or dates of birth...years married and so forth...with the children following along plus a death certificate and maybe a baptism certificate or birth certificate then you can safely connect this family even if you find some variation of the spelling of the last name or as in the census reports...the first name. I think the thing we have to do is try to document our sources as much as possible, but you are right...even with all this we still make mistakes....that is what I like about computers...it is so easy to fix the mistake! Well to date I have not found that the Friendl/Friedl family share any connection at all. Of course I may discover something different in the future, but it appears to be a separate and distinct surname despite sounding very much alike. But who knows? Although one may very often find out differently, I have learned that it is not a good idea to assume that a family with a similarly spelled surname, or even the SAME surname, living in the same area is related. I learned this through a very painful and humbling experience from a few years ago. I was hired to do research by a man in Texas on the surname Harvey, specifically an Isaac Harvey, in Fox Twp., Elk Co., PA. I had the church records from the Elkton Presbyterian church, and knew that the Harveys of Kersey attended that church. Isaac Harvey, a member of the Elkton Presbyterian church, was born in 1843, and John Harvey, another prominent member of the church was born in 1838. I, quite naturally, assumed that they were brothers and proceded to the Elk County courthouse under that assumption. I even bet the man I was doing the research for that I would find that they were brothers. They attended the same church, Isaac is buried in the Earleyville Cemetery and John is buried in the Elkton Cemetery-- both cemeteries are associated with the Elkton Presbyterian Church. What would you think? Boy was I wrong. It turns out that John Harvey immigrated from Ireland and Isaac Harvey immigrated from England. Isaac Harvey was the son of a George and Mary Harvey, both from Scotland. Despite having the SAME last name, there was no apparent connection between the two Harvey families living in Kersey at that time. There may have been a familial connection at some point way back in the past, but it was WAY past the time frame that I was working in. I was SO embarrassed to tell the man that he was right-- that there was no connection between the Harvey families despite my confident boasting. My face still gets red when I think about it. :-) As a result, I don't make assumptions like that when I do research. If the connections are there, they will be readily apparent. If they are NOT there, one cannot assume that there is a connection.
Hi Gus, A great big "Thank You" for posting the Death Records and the St. Mary's Church death records for Kreckel, Heiberger and Lechner. It was very gracious of you to take the time to type in that information, especially since you only had one Kreckel connection. It will help me a lot! As to the spelling of Friendl, or Friendel or Friedl...the same as Kreckel, Kreckle, Kreakel and Krickel and other various spellings of the same name: you just have to take all the records and find the common threads that tie the family together. When my g. grandparents got married the marriage license has Wilhelm Kregel but when William and Mary Core Kreckel had my grandmother, her baptismal certificate has the surname spelled as Kreckle, as does her certificate of nursing...but she herself spelled the last name as Kreckel...her brother spelled it as Krackel and that was just in my direct line. We can not get hung up on the spelling of names but we must try to make correct connections. To me it is just one great big puzzle, waiting for someone to put it together and I notice the more information I gather the more questions I have! I guess that is what make genealogy so enjoyable....you never know what may be right around the corner. As to mistakes in Death records...I have found from collection the Death Records from County Courthouses and PA Vital Records alike that the info is only as good as the person giving the information. ie...I have death records where the person giving the information, when asked the father's name will give their father's name instead of the deceased's father's name....my grandfather when asked for the spouse's name gave his mother's name even though she had died when he was 7 years old and his father had remarried and had seven more children. So we just try to figure out the right answers and then go on from there. Thanks again, Gus for your kind contribution to the list. Thank you for offering the death records. I am searching for the Wittman family. Searching: BRUNNER, WEIS, and many more from Saint Marys. Sincerely yours Ceil
Joseph Heiberger and Susan Friendl were my great grandparents. Their daughter, Martha, was my grandmother-- married first to Vincent Rohrbach and second to Kenneth Bish. Susan's name is not Friedl as written below, though. It's actually FRIENDL or sometimes FRIENDEL, and I have never been able to find much info on the surname. Susan's parent's were John Friendl and Julia Walker. Julia Walker's (or Wacker's) father John had the distinction of being named as the first man to fell a tree in the new colony of St. Marys. It's kind of funny, but I have never really pursued the few St. Marys lines that I have. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Gus4970@aol.com> To: <PAELK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 13, 2001 5:10 PM Subject: [PAELK] Heiberger Death Records > Following are the death records of the Heiberger family from the St. Marys > Church > > Mary Theresia Heiberger > Death: 17 Apr 1848 > Burial: 18 Apr 1848 > Age: 1 Day > Origin: St. Marys > > Joseph Heiberger > Death: 14 Oct 1862 > Burial: 15 Oct 1862 > Age: 1.6 years > Parents: Joseph Heiberger > > James Leonard Heiberger > Death: 15 Nov 1864 > Parents: Joseph and Catherine Heiberger > > Elizabeth Heiberger > Burial: 8 Feb 1870 > Age: 2 years 3 months > Parents: Joseph Heiberger - Elizabeth Regal Kreckel > > George Edward Heiberger > Burial: 30 Aug 1870 > Age: 10 days > > Benedict Heiberger > Death: 17 Dec 1879 > Burial: 19 Dec 1879 > Age: 6 yrs > Parents: Joseph Heiberger - Catherine Kreckle > > Benedict Heiberger > Death: 27 Jul 1883 > Burial: 28 Jul 1883 > Age: 3 years > Cause: Diptheria > Origin: St. Marys > > John Heiberger > Death: 7 feb 1884 > Burial: 9 Feb 1884 > Age: 8 years 7 months > Parents: John Heiberger - Catherine Kreckle > Origin: St Marys > > Magdalen Heiberger > Death: 4 Oct 1884 > Burial: 5 Oct 1884 > Age: 60 years > Origin: Wuertemberg > > Wendelin John Heiberger > Death: 6 Oct 1886 > Burial: 8 Oct 1886 > Age: 2 years > Parents: Mother Eva Heiberger > Origin: St. Marys > > Laura Heiberger > Death: 9 mar 1894 > Burial: 12 Mary 1894 > Age: 1 Year 6 days > Parents: Joseph Heiberger - Susan Freidl > > Catherine Heiberger > Death: 10 Jul 1897 > Burial: 12 Jul 1897 > Age: 59 Years > Husband: Joseph (nee Kreckel) > Cause: Apoplexy > Origin: Benzinger Twsp > > Joseph Heiberger > Death: 28 Apr 1908 > Burial: 30 Apr 1908 > Age: 85 years > Wife: Catherine Kreckle > > Maurus Frank Heiberger > Death: 4 may 1909 > Burial: 6 May 1909 > Age: 2 mos > Parents: William Heiberger - Margaret Daniel > Cause: Pneumonia > Origin: Chestnut St > > Barbara Evelyn Heiberger > Death: 10 Feb 1915 > Burial: 13 Feb 1915 > Age: 7 years 4 months > Parents: Jacob Heiberger -Elizabeth Eberly > Source: Spruce St > > Infant Heiberger > Death: 13 Dec 1918 > Burail: 14 Dec 1918 > Age: 11 hours > Parents: William Heiberger - Margaret Daniel > CAuse: Premature > Origin: St Marys > > Catherine Heiberger > Death: 22 Sept 1920 > Burial: 25 Sep 1920 > Age: 18 years > Cause: Heart Failure > Origin: St. Marys > > This is exactly as extracted by the St. Marys Historical Society.
