I attended a class on using "familysearch.org " yesterday. It was interesting to note that: 1. The LDS made a deal to microfilm records at their expense and provide copy as request free to the governments whose records they copied. 2. The original films are on a silver (not deteriorate film) from which all copies are made. 3. The originals are stored deep in a Mountain near Salt Lake City. 4. Many records were lost recently due to earthquakes, flood, etc., The filmed records were restored by using copies of the films held by the LDS storage facility. 5. They have records from all over the world. I Hope this was of interest.
