I couldn't help but notice this. I have Stiehl/Steele in my family but they are in Fleetwood, Berks Co, PA. I don't know much of them but they lived in Fleetwood. My John Steele/Stiehl was a gardener/grower and supposed to be the last of his line even though he was survived by children. I think the article written in a Fleetwood History book meant he was the last of his siblings but I do not know about that. I have no siblings for him. Here is what I have on him: Johannes Shamp Steele son of Abraham Stiehl/Steele (bn between 1780-1790 in PA) and Eva Shamp (bn in PA). Johannes Steele bn 26 Jan 1827 PA d 14 Dec 1915 Fleetwood, Berks Co, PA md 9 Aug 1848 Ruscombmanor Twp, Berks Co, PA to Sarah Keller Noll. She was the dau of Heinrich Keller Noll (1798 Alsace Twp, Berks Co, PA-1883 Ruscombmanor Twp, Berks Co, PA) and Maria Catharina Keller (1803 Ruscombmanor Twp, Berks Co, PA-1885 Ruscombmanor Twp, Berks Co, PA). Sarah was bn 5 Apr 1824 Ruscombmanor Twp, Berks Co, PA d 22 Sep 1912 Fleetwood, Berks Co, PA. I have 8 children for them: 1. Mary Stiehl bn abt 1848 died after 1915 md Joseph Peters 2. Eva Noll Stiehl/Steele (my line) bn 3 Oct 1850 Berks Co, PA d 14 Nov 1897 Muhlenberg Twp, Berks Co, PA md Johannes Snyder Noll (1849 Muhlenberg Twp, Berks Co, PA-1902 Muhlenberg Twp, Berks Co, PA son of Gideon Fuchs Noll (1813 Muhlenberg Twp, Berks Co, PA-1880 Muhlenberg Twp, Berks Co, PA) and Catharina Schneider/Snyder (1808 PA-1886 Berks Co, PA). 3. Catharine Steele bn abt 1852 4. Elisabeth Steele bn abt 1856 5. Emma N. Stiehl bn 25 Jan 1858 d 16 Dec 1948 md Morris M. Rothermel 6. Maggie Stiehl bn abt 1861 PA died after 1915 md Daniel Bowers 7. Henry N. Stiehl bn abt 1863 PA died after 1915 8. Rebecca Stiehl bn abt 1866 PA died after 1915 md John Rothermel Maybe this will help you but maybe it might confuse you more! I know in Berks Co there are other variants of Stiehl/Steele some with a Y at the end of the name. Good luck! crystal >My basis for thinking that Hugh Steel was likely born in PA is two part-- 1. Of his 9 children who were still alive in 1880 (7 of them), they all state on that census that their father was born in PA. They were a bit divided on their response for their mother, some saying VA and some saying PA, but most said PA for her, too........ Sherry Steele (Seattle)< ______________________________
