    1. [PaDgo] "expiration" on land warrants, surveys, etc.

    3. Can someone explain to me the "warrant" process in Penna in the mid-to-late 1700's? In particular, I'm wondering about whether warrants "expired" if a person didn't take action on them, and, if so, how long did they have to make the required steps. And what were the required steps - was it sufficient to have your warranted land surveyed? Did you have to live on it (you did in the late 1600's, per William Penn's plan to settle parts of Penna)? How long until you had to patent it? Could you transfer a warrant/survey/patent to another party? Was there a "deed" process to do so, or how was it transferred? [I've got a case out in Bedford County where a potential relative, William Wertz, warrants land in 1784, that same land is surveyed by a Benjamin Shoemaker in 1795, and I never hear more about the land (though I'm pretty certain it is occupied today. :-) There are no deeds between William Wertz and anybody (nor a will), and a similar statement can be made about Benjamin SHoemaker. - Jeff R
