    3. Does anyone have any information about 'Miller' in Harrisburg, PA (Dauphin County)? I have a great grandmother Johanna Miller (1868-1920) who married Levi Snoddy (1857-1923) Family stories say that Johanna had a brother, we believe a 'George' Miller, who was in the Navy and was one of the many unfortunates who died in Havana Harbor aboard the USS Maine...as in the rallying cry 'Remember the Maine'...circa 1898. Their father is recorded as Joe or perhaps Joseph Miller - no exact dates, but should have been born circa 1840s... My family has been hunting this line (without success) for years... ANYONE who can provide a lead to this elusive family line would be gratefully appreciated !!! I may be contacted directly via e-mail at: lbarkley3@comcast.net Thank you in advance if you have any information. 2. Dick: I've been there. It is also called Three Churches. There is a cemetery in the middle of the town and the 3 churches around it. Two miles is nearly on the banks, isn't it? Haha. Thanks for your note. I wish I could find out more about my progenitors in the cemetery there. Ruth Clark, Poinciana, FL

One son might be named Johannes as his full given name--but mostly sons and daughters are given a "prename" or saints name such as Johan or Maria and this is never intended to serve as the equivalent of an English given name. It is for official religious purposes mostly. The "middle" name they are given is called the "rufname" in German and that is the actual call name or given name. The same is true of French names--like Jean Pierre, the equivalent of Johan Peter. So it isn't that they changed the usage to accomodate the English language--it is merely that they followed German naming customs. Joan

    1. Re: [PDGO] re Roth JOHN, yes
    2. D. E. Weinhold
    3. Carolyn, Away back the "Germany speaking families" when they had their babies Baptized, the babes were all given a Bible Name as a first name. The Boys were usually given the 1st. name of Johannes (later John or Hans) and THEN their middle (Christian) name was usually that of the male witness that was along for the Baptizing: George, Henry, Jacob etc. As for the female,s it was MARIA for the babies and then the Christian name, that of the lady present, such their grandmother etc: Catherine, Elizabeth, Barbara etc. The First maybe "stuck" with John or Hans, and Maria, Mary or even Polly, meaning the same thing (for the girl,s, of course). The change being due to the English language. Of course the above may not have been "carved in stone", but as a rule you can at least have a"starting" point. Of course, more could be said in regards to the above. Ernest

    3. Hello. I am looking for the surname of COY in PA. My husband's grandfather stated that he was told that the Coy family was PA Dutch, but that is all he knew. He is in his 80s. I have a Levi Coy that was born in Elkhart, IN but I cannot find any mention as to who his parents were. I would love to get information the the Pennsylvania COY family if possible. Maybe (a long shot) I can somehow look at any information and try to connect the two. Thanks, carrol mick carrolmick@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Ernest, Nice to see your name appear again! Do you see a lot of the use of the name John in your Roth records? Wonder if it could be the clan's "Christian" name?? My ancestor's brothers wete both named John (Nicholas & George. His was just plain John. Carolyn
