    3. Hi Joan and List, I wonder if you could please tell me a little about the Frederick Co. MD Brethren? Were there several churches in the 18th century from about the third decade on, or was there a large German-Brethren settlement composed of many Brethren churches? My NEFF and SWINEHART ancestors moved there from Chester, York, Lancaster and Philadelphia Counties, PA in, if I remember correctly, the 1730s -- to Monocacy. Some of my other lines have connections there, too. In one line, the older children were born in PA and then one was born in Frederick Co., MD, but his younger brothers and sisters were born in PA. There seemed to be quite a bit of movement back and forth between PA and MD among Brethren families.. I am still trying to find my elusive ARNOLD, SMITH line and wonder if they also had connections to Frederick Co. MD., as well as Berks Co., PA. Thank you so much for any information you can offer that would generate clues. Cathy Martin ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 1. [PaDgo] Ermold (Arnold), Schmidt, Schmitt (Smith)
    2. Cathy Martin
    3. Hi Sheila and List Members I so appreciated your doing a lookup in your PA.German marriages book last week for my ggg grandparents, Jeremiah SMITH and Rowena or Regina ARNOLD (all I knew was that their daughter, Maria / Mariah was born in Berks Co. in 1824). You found no SMITH / ARNOLD marriage at all, but I have received some information that could be a breakthrough. An ARNOLD researcher wrote to say that in Berks Co. records, the name ARNOLD is spelled "ERMOLD," apparently the original German spelling for many Berks Co. ARNOLD families. Also, after you did the lookup, it occurred to me that Jeremiah SMITH's name could have originally been SCHMIDT or SCHMITT. Shelia, I would be tremendously grateful if you could look again to see if any ERMOLDs or ARNOLDs married, SCHMIDTs, SCHMITTs or SMITHs. Because this was a German family and Jeremiah, Rowena/Regina and Maria/Mariah could be middle names, I'm not sure if they would be listed in records under those given names. Thank you so much for your kindness in doing lookups for all of us. I am also sending this e-mail to the Lancaster and Chester Co. lists, because I believe Berks County was formed from parts of those two counties. With warm regards, Cathy Marti ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! 2. Daryl & Paul Bulkley
    3. The only information I have on Mathilde Oltmann was she was married in New York at the German Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1844. She evidently was born in the United States, in New York, and family myth states she was Pennsylvania Dutch. With so little information how can I trace if there was an Oltmann family in Pennsylvania? There were Oltmanns, but they spread out to Ohio, and other states. I am having a hard time getting started on this Line. thank you in advance for any little bits and pieces given out. Daryl

    3. Marilyn, I am not researching MOSER, but have run across mentions of MOSER many times as I research my own family, which is the MOSES line. One website that you should most definitely check out is Gary Mosier's page called "The Moser Genealogy and History Home Page"; the address is: http://www.surf-ici.com/mosier/default.htm Start with the link to the Moser German Genealogy Project, then go next to the examination of early Moser immigrants (which by the way isn't completely accurate -- it includes my Adam MOSES and refers to him as if he were a MOSER, which he clearly was not). Next check the family documents, followed by the Researcher's page. -- Hope this helps, Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu M J Moser wrote: > > Peter Moser, according to my grandfather was born someplace in > Northampton County and descends from a Michael who emigrated to this > country in 1751. 1. [PaDgo] Family of Peter Moser (b. abt. 1796) & Magdalena Horlacher
    2. M J Moser
    3. Peter Moser, according to my grandfather was born someplace in Northampton County and descends from a Michael who emigrated to this country in 1751. I don't know if Michael was his father. 1850 census records place his birth at 1796 or 1797. Magdalena Horlacher was born 1800-1801 . Her parents Daniel Horlacher and Magdalena Wittman, of Upper and Lower Saucon. Peter and Magdalena were married in the Borough of Easton, October 20, 1822 by Rev. Mr. John Hecht, German Ev. Lutheran Church of Easton, Northampton County. They were both of Saccona Twp. (published: "The Easton Centinel" Easton, Northampton County, PA, Friday, Nov. 1, 1822) My great-grandfather, Osiah Anthony Moser, was born in Northampton County July 23, 1823. He and his twin brother Owen Joseph were in the Lower Saucon Reformed Church, Lower Saucon Twp. A sister Hannah Louisa was born July 1829, was baptized in the same church. The family was living in Ohio for the 1840 census, There are IGI records for other children in the family born after 1829 in Pennsylvania and Pike County, Ohio. Osiah married Mary Ruckman in Ohio in 1845, and they were living in Iowa for the 1850 census. Peter and Magdalena are my gggrandparents. It is very possible that some of their younger children lived well into the 1900's. Osiah Moser was the oldest child in his family. He passed away in Kansas in 1893. Peter and Magdalena's gggrandchildren and ggggrandchildren may well find their names on death records. My grandfather, b. 1871, was the youngest of Osiah and Mary's 11 children, and lived until the early 1950's. His brother who was a few years older lived to the mid 1940's. One of his sister's lived to be 100, passing away in 1948. My grandfather's parents were identified on his death certificate. Although I already the information, I found on my grandfather's death certificate, his birth date and the place of his birth. I don't remember if his parents were named in his obituary notice which I recently saw, but it could have been. **Identifying Peter's parents and his birthplace is my current block. I would also like to find the birthplace of Magdalena. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It is my hope that the information I have shared will help others connect with our family. I would love to hear from my cousins and share information. Marilyn CT Marilyn Moser mjmoser@snet.net

    1. [PaDgo] Where was Barbara Wagner born on 14 Mar 1775?
    2. Dora Smith
    3. Barbara Wagner was born on March 14, 1775, to Henry and Elizabeth Wagner, according to her death record. (She died during a small window of time when they were keeping death records.) Henry and Elizabeth Wagner lived in Reading, Berks Co, atleast from 1789, but I do not know where they were before that. I do not know they lived in Berks Co, in fact, I have a vague memory of finding evidence in Pennsylvania Archives that I can't now find that Henry Wagner may have come from Lancaster Co or someplace, though I could easily have him mixed up with one of the Burkhart families. If anyone can locate Barbara Wagner's christening in any of their compilations of records, can they please tell me where the family lived at the time and at what church she was christened? And if they happen to locate marriage of Henry and Elizabeth Wagner at the same church, that would be the cat's meow! 1. [PaDgo] Henry and Johannes WAGNER, RITTER, JUNG, Reading
    2. Dora Smith
    3. I have quite a number of new clues about the identity of my Henry Wagner of Reading. I hope to have even more when I get my information properly digested. Henry Wagner was in Reading by 1789, I guess; I haven't yet found the records of the baptisms of most of his children though I'm sure I've seen them before. He also was called Heinrich Wagner, and Henrich Wagner. It isn't inconceivable his name often had a first name in front of it. Susanne, probably his last child, was born to Henrich and Elizabeth Wagner in 1784, and baptized 3/27/1796. (I must have copied that wrong; I don't know if this really happened in the 1780;s or 1790's) The sponsors were John Wagner and Suzanne. Barbara, who is my direct ancestor, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Wagner, was b on 14 Mar 1775 - and not necessarily in Reading. Wherever a Barbara Wagner, may have been ____ Barbara Wagner, since call name is second name, was b on 14 Mar 1775 would be where Henry and Elizabeth Wagner lived at that time. Johann Wagner (John) and Susanne his wife had a child Susanne bapt 11/29/1798 in Rading, Fist Reformed. So Henry (Heinrich, Henrich) Wagner who married Elizabeth and lived in Reading had a close relative, probably brother, Johannes (John) Wagner who married Susanne and lived in Reading or very nearby. Does this help anyone pin down who was Henry Wagner? There are other clues; particularly, close family ties to the Jung's and to Frantz Ritter and his wife Barbara. Paul Jung son of Christina and ____ Jung, b 11/9/1781 bap 8/24/1782, Schwarzwald, sponsors were Henrich and Elizabeth Wagner. Samuel Ritter, son of Frantz Ritter and his wife (who was Barbara), bapt 4/7/1793, Schwarzwald, sponsor Henrich Wagner. Sarah Seidel dau Nicholas Seidel and wife, bapt 3/18/1798, sponsors Frantz Ritter and wife Barbara. also sponsors of Nicholas and wife's daughter Sarah Seidel. Hannah Jensen dau Jacob and Eva Jensen, b 5/16/1799 bapt 8/11/1799, sponsors John Wagner and Elizabeth (?) Friedans Union Ch. Jacob Jensen seems to have been closely related to Christopher Jensen and Marina Lutz. Because baptismal sponsors usually were family members of the parents, these are usually clues to family membership and kinship. Can anyone find what Wagners were tied to the Frantz Ritter and Paul Jung families? Yours, Dora Smith __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. It sounds like he was mixed up. People often are when it comes to the Pennsylvania Dutch. My family was so mixed up they decided to throw out all memory of being Pennsylvania Dutch; my father is half German and from that news you could have knocked him over with a feather. He must mean Lower German - which is the family of German dialects that the Pennsylvania Dutch spoke. Alot of people also confuse "Deutsch", which means "German", which is what the Pennsylvania Dutch actually called themselves, with "Dutch", which means from Holland.
