    3. M You don't need to apologize. The purpose of this list and others like it is so you can post to everyone at once. Another purpose of this type of list is to share information. When people respond privately to message that seeks information about a family or individual, only the person asking the question benefits from the response. Others looking for the same information don't receive it. All responses to this list and others are stored in searchable archives. It is possible to go back through those archives and look for information that has been sent to the list that may help you. Your question is an interesting one. I'm sure there are others who will also be interested in the answer. Marilyn CT "michael d. mahaffey" wrote: > > Hello, > Sorry to post to everyone at once. 1. Re: [PaDgo] new privacy threat: genealogy?
    2. M J Moser
    3. I live in a state where access to vital records is very restricted. There is a severe restriction as to who can obtain copies of an individual's birth certificate. I would like to see more stringent restrictions on who can obtain copies of all present day vital records. For instance, I could walk in a get as copy of the marriage record for my neighbor's daughter who married a year ago. This would give me all the family information for both she and her husband. I have no legitimate need for this information. The genealogists in my state helped to write the present law that is one the books. Unfortunately voluntary restrictions pertaining to individual p does not work. In every family there are individuals who see not harm in making public information other family members may wish to keep private. Sooner or later there are going to be more restrictive laws passed to protect the privacy and identities of living individuals. Genealogists need to be involved in writing those laws. Who knows better the legitimate needs of genealogical researcher. I don't need access to state and town vital records to find out the maiden name of my cousin's wife's mother. I can pick up a telephone and ask her. I think what I am really trying to say is that experienced professional Genealogy Researchers need to be a part of finding a balanced solution that protects the legitimate interests of the living while making the information needed to learn our ancestral heritage available. Personally, I don't want to find my picture or any other personal information on a relatives web page; and especially on a web page I didn't even know existed. I love looking for my ancestors, but I don't need information about my living relatives to do that. He was the son of Kraft Billet b. 1778 and Catharina Sipe Billet. I don't know who Zachariah married. His father Kraft was the son of Kraft Billet, the 1751 immigrant, who settled in Hellam Twp., York C., Pa. My 1998 book did not include any of Zachariah's descendants. So I'd be pleased to learn if your George Daniel had brothers and sisters. Don

My father who was born in 1912 and whose name was also Walter was, I believe, from Pennsylvania Dutch country. His father was a firemen who died before 1930 when my father graduated from high school. I am just starting a search back to my roots and found your information. I am curious about your Schoppe family. What era are you talking about (i.e., this century, last,...). If it is this century would could be distant cousins? Although I now live in San Diego, I am from Philadelphia where I lived until 1996. I have a brother: William, and two sisters: Judy and Marylou. I was born April 17, 1945. My father Walter was born November 1, 1912 and lived until October 30, 1969. I have no knowledge about my grandfather other than he was a firemen. My father had a sister who died two years ago. Her name was Mildred Schoppe Ward. She was older than my father.

    3. Hello all, I am trying to locate a place called East Buffalo, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Recently I found an extraction of a land sale in Fayette, Seneca County, New York: "Stephen Frantz and wife Mary Barbara of East Buffalo, Northumberland County, PA., 1807" This may provide just the puzzle piece I am missing from finding the Pennsylvania origins of my Frantz family; in particular, Jacob Frantz and his wife Anna Maria, who with five other Frantz families (perhaps brothers), and Singer/Diesinger families, left Pennsylvania about 1804 to settle in Seneca County, New York. They were either Reformed Lutheran or German Reformed Church people. Thank you, Suzanne Frantz St. Clair, Michigan

    1. [PaDgo] new privacy threat: genealogy?
    2. "Genealogy" as it is practiced by many on the Internet is indeed a danger to privacy. Responsible genealogists do not put information on living people on the web. I have a cutoff date of 1900 and don't release information on people born after that date. I have even seen social security numbers of living people on home pages, pictures of their grandchildren and so forth, which is certainly invading the privacy and perhaps even safety of those little ones. The congressman from Indiana, probably no genealogist himself, has heard about this kind of irresponsible data-spreading and is justifiably concerned. JHall

    1. [PaDgo] Posting about possible Congressional interference
    2. Dear PDGO-Rooters: A few minutes ago I received the following unsigned note from one member of this list. Here we go again. How about we stick to genealogy. That is what we agreed to when we joined thins list. Dear Sir or Madam: If you feel that the content of the message I sent to the Northeast list has nothing to do with genealogy in general and is not applicable to New England genealogy in specific, then I have to tell you that I believe that you stand in grievous error. Any effort on the part of misguided and ignorant members of Congress to impede the free flow of information of an historical and genealogical nature is a matter that interferes with the pursuit of family history data, which is clearly interference with the intent and content of this list. Indeed, in its most stringent interpretation, it could close down all of Rootsweb's maillists, to say nothing of all the web sites that are slowly emerging that hold transcriptions of original source data. I must conclude that you did not think the matter through to a logical conclusion when you wrote, castigating me for my posting. Sincerely, Allan E. Green (please note that I did sign my name, which is more than you did!)

    1. [PaDgo] Use of mother's maiden name
    2. Dear Marilyn: I think what he is referring to is the use of your mother's maiden name by your bank as a means of identifying that a caller on the phone is really you when discussing your credit card account. I have repeatedly asked my credit card issuers to use something else, but they insist that when they try to use other types of personal identifiers, people forget what they chose, and they will never forget the maiden name of their mothers. Thus, they insist on using that as their means of insuring that the person who calls them is really you. Allan

    1. [PaDgo] Special keyboard characters
    2. Phil Knox
    3. This is a hint for Windows 98 users (and I think win 95): Unless for some reason it initially never got installed for you, "Character Map" is a little program found in win 98's "System Tools". It allows you to find and produce all manner of special characters on your keyboard such as the umlaut. If you need to do this often, creating a shortcut right on your desktop to load this little program can be quite helpful. The program shows you all the characters and when you select a character it gives you the keystrokes to produce it in your document. Or one can choose a character (or even several) and then click on the "copy" button. Now you can go and paste it (them) right into your document using the clipboard. Phil ..........................
