    1. [PD-LIFE] AIR CONDITIONED CITY
    2. Sheila Kline
    3. To answer Tracy's question...yes, Bluefield is known as an "air conditioned" city, and anytime the temperature hits 90 degrees or higher the merchants here in Bluefield give free lemonade. These days, they are using the "prepared lemonade", so it is not like the good ole' days when it was fresh squeezed with lots of lemons floating in it!! But, it is a nice tradition here. The only thing it has to be 90 degrees registered at the Mercer County Airport, and it does not reflect the true temperature of Bluefield City, so there would probably be a few more "Lemonade Days" if it were measured downtown, since the airport is on top of a mountain where it is much cooler. We have had a few more 90 degree days lately, but as always, it really gets cool at night, and there is dew in the mornings, sometimes until after l0:00 a.m. When the haze settles in on the mountains, it is really a beautiful site to see. Has anyone seen the famous photo taken by Grubb Studios here in Bluefield of the clouds when they were rolling in on the New River Mountain? It is an absolutely awesome photo - looks just like ocean waves rolling in. He has won quite a few awards with that photo. The story goes that he saw the clouds forming, and quickly got an airplane and ventured above the mountains to get this magnificant photo...talk about being at the right place at the right time!! We have warm days, and some fierce thunderstorms when they don't split up as they hit our mountains. We had storms here this week, and when it thunders my little doggies all cuddle around us. The one named Skipy gets really close to me and I wrap him in a blanket to help him not be afraid. And he is not a tiny doggie....a little butterball. Oh yes, the kielbosi that my dad hid was already cooked. Dad didn't let it last long enough to make it to the fridge for storage. Glad to be a part of your PaDutch group....you are all so caring, and so much fun!! Sheila P.S. Thanks for reminding me that the greens in the corn field were most likely dandelion greens...I believe they were, but the creesy (sp) greens are not watercress. We had that in the stream in the spring - really delicious, but a little bitter. I believe watercress is a delicacy - a little pricey. I'll have to "google" or "yahoo" greens and see what I can find. 3. Sheila, I am wondering if those greens could be purslane; they are abundant at this time. They have a reddish cast to them, the leaves are oblong with a rounded tip, overall the stem and leaves are thick. They grow close to the ground rather than upright. I have never eaten them and I don't know how they are prepared.
