    2. Gotta disagree on that....especially since even the word gumbo is derived from the West African name for okra~~gombo....every cook book I have calls for okra...now there are some that will use file powder (pronounced "fee LAY") instead, which is not added until just before serving, but most do call for okra....maybe cook books in the north don't call for it....an old cajun friend's Mamere (grandma) told me pointblank "no okra, not gumbo"....she is a hoot! -- Meddle not in the affairs of dragons for thou art crunchy and good with ketchup... -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: "Daniel Reinhold" <dreinhold1@comcast.net> > Look in any recipe book and you will find that most gumbos do NOT have okra > in them! > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Tracy" <better_than_good@yahoo.com> > To: <padutch-life@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Friday, July 27, 2007 1:39 PM > Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] More Southern stuff/okra/gumbo > > > > > > --- Daniel wrote: > > > >> Lynn et al, Most gumbo's do not contain okra. > > ********************** > > > > Daniel, > > > > Then it is not gumbo but a soup, stew or whatnot. > > > > tracy > > > > > > > > > ________________________________________________________________________________ > ____ > > Sick sense of humor? 3. Gumbo may have been named for okra ~~gombo. But almost every one of the VERY many cookbooks that I have do NOT call for okra in gumbo. See the many internet cooking site as: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/find/results?search=gumbo Als see the heading on the gumbu page - "From jambalaya to King Cake, get tasty Louisiana recipes - sponsored by Louisiana Tourism " ----- Original Message ----- From: <barefootrebelgirl@comcast.net> To: <padutch-life@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 28, 2007 1:43 AM Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] More Southern stuff/okra/gumbo > Gotta disagree on that....especially since even the word gumbo is derived > from the West African name for okra~~gombo....every cook book I have calls > for okra...now there are some that will use file powder (pronounced "fee > LAY") instead, which is not added until just before serving, but most do > call for okra....maybe cook books in the north don't call for it....an > old cajun friend's Mamere (grandma) told me pointblank "no okra, not > gumbo"....she is a hoot! > > -- > Meddle not in the affairs of dragons for thou art crunchy and good with > ketchup... > > -------------- Original message ---------------------- > From: "Daniel Reinhold" <dreinhold1@comcast.net> >> Look in any recipe book and you will find that most gumbos do NOT have >> okra >> in them! >> >> ----- Original Message ----- >> From: "Tracy" <better_than_good@yahoo.com> >> To: <padutch-life@rootsweb.com> >> Sent: Friday, July 27, 2007 1:39 PM >> Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] More Southern stuff/okra/gumbo >> >> >> > >> > --- Daniel wrote: >> > >> >> Lynn et al, Most gumbo's do not contain okra. >> > ********************** >> > >> > Daniel, >> > >> > Then it is not gumbo but a soup, stew or whatnot. >> > >> > tracy >> > >> > >> > >> > >> ________________________________________________________________________________ >> ____ >> > Sick sense of humor?
