Money is always a good gift all year round, to me at least, though I admitted to my hubby I'm in favor of getting gifts still for X-mas, but I'm not picky! I just have always wondered what it was like to bake things from scratch & when I found that wonderful combination of cranberries & jello i had to "Jump UP' & ask! I've always wanted to know some recipes on cranberries anyhow sort of! I sometiems watch for the cranberries to come to the stores thinking I'd go for it, & pick one up, but never do. Do they have recipes fro the cranberry sauce on the back?!! I was always brought up on canned stuff, so I don't venture off the beaten track so to speak, but am curious How the other half lives too! Ya know! I'm readying the table at my house for Tracy & Bryan's arrival! I spend the afternoon baking more cookies, & making some raspberry tea for the welcome tomorrow evening! I've got some peanut butter cookies for them too, from last week. Oh by the way Lynn & hubby & Rick, na na Tracy let me know what you all look like recently. I wondered. 1. [PD-LIFE] Cooking from scratch
    2. Mary Sayman
    3. Cooking from scratch can be tough, depending on what you are cooking. I once (this is the operative word) made my whole Thanksgiving meal from scratch. I went out and purchased a pumpkin, de-seeded it, cut it into manageable pieces and peeled it, then cooked it down adding all the spices for my pies. I bought cherries, pitted them, and cooked them down; bought apples and prepped them. I bought fresh squash and cooked it; baked bread from scratch and made my own stuffing; did my cranberry sauce - the whole nine yards. It was exciting for me to do it all from scratch, but my husband (God rest his soul) did not appreciate a thing I did. While I was proud of myself and everything turned out really good, I never went to that trouble again. It is very time consuming, but the reward of accomplishment was wonderful. If I were a bit younger and we had lots of family to invite, I would do it again. 1. Re: [PD-LIFE] Cooking from scratch
    2. I know the feeling, Mary. I did this also but never at the same time. Over the years. I can remember the pumpkins as we would then make the seeds eatable. My daughter did that for many years when she was married. No more. Too many things to fit into the time it takes out of your life to do it. There were not the continued upkeep of a home. You built it right the first time and it was many years before anything else was done. None of the constant updates that seem to have to be done now. It was the way it was and all you did was give it a good cleaning spring and fall. Your life was caring for clothes, cooking meals and baking, raising children. Each of these was important and think a lot more time was put into it so the end product was the best there was. But the key word here was you really had the 'time'. Very little outside shopping as you did it all at home. You had your garden for food and sewed clothing when needed. I maybe over simplifying it, but the manual labor was easier on the body than the constant stress we put on ourselves in this modern time. But I do think my generation lived in the transformation time from the old ways to the new. Of course, each generation goes through this, but the 20th century was a time of upheaval on many levels. When you stop and think of it, it really boggles the mind. At least mine.
