My dad died in 1992, Tracy, but we still miss him, that's all! I still look back at the beauty of the falll colors for the funeral, I celebrated the fact i was back then. And sharing with my mother & two sisters, I just plan on going back eventually, if my husband should die before myself! Though got plenty of time to change my mind too! The future will take care of itself! Though my kids will be in school next year, so gotta get into something by then, to get busy with a job! I've raised kids, & don't have a major in mind to get out there & find something! I guess I do have "managing skills". And been told I have a natural ability to boss people around, so maybe something could be made of those skills, I guess! Weather is supposed to be nice, in the 70's at night, & maybe near 90 by the time of the weekend. Maybe we'll get the canoe, on the truck & go to one of the places you can hike, & CANOE, & COOK OUT! Sounds like it could be a plan, since it's going to be warm, but the "heat" not so much! Bearable! The sun actually feels great now, this time of year! By the way, we had windows put into our trailer, & WOW, you could feel the warmth, which will be good this summer, when the heat is outside, & we're trying to stay cooler! Can't wait to see the electric bills if they go down any! We'll probably be AMAZED! Is anyone planning to come to FL, this year?! Cathy and Donald, Great that you got new windows that should help the electric bill. Have you changed your light bulbs to the new ones? I did and cut $36 off our bill each month; paid for themselves in two months. If you haven't done this already...try it you will be surprised! Well, my husband has changed some of the bulbs. We have all differnt ones in the trailer, but thanks for the tip. What we need is a new tree planted perhaps to help with the heating on the one side, but wouldn't help us, but maybe the next generation, though our kids, may evenutally own our place in the future! We still own our little part of FL paradise! Thanks allot, Pat. I bought some of the new light bulbs to try. While they do help to cut your light bills, I found I didn't like them very much. I couldn't figure it out, so I started researching them. It seems they are florescent rather than incandescent. Florescent lights give me migraine headaches. These lights also have mercury in them. Mercury is deadly if you get it into your bloodstream via a cut or ingestion. That's why they quite making thermometers containing mercury. Because I don't want to chance one of these new lights breaking and me getting cut - and because I have animals who like to investigate everything - not to mention the migraines, I don't use these at all. The few I have are safely stored in the cupboard. These bulbs also have to be disposed of in a strict way - cannot (or should not) toss them in the trash as the mercury will get into the land when they are crushed/buried or whatever. They should be taken to a collection site. I feel they are too dangerous in the long run and stick with the regular bulbs. I do find that I like the Reveal bulbs because they are easier on your eyes. about the new light bulbs. One of my son's changed all his light bulbs and could not believe the diff. in the bill from one month to the next with the new bulbs. He called us when it came in the mail. :) It took almost $100 off of their elec. bill!! ;) They lived out in Washington State at the time. Ever since then, that's what they use. The rest of us are following suit, one room at a time. :) Donnie still tells the kids to turn off the lights when you leave a room. ;) Kathy Piqua, Ohio ----- Original Message ----- From: "P Dyer" <pdyer53@yahoo.com> To: <padutch-life@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 22, 2009 10:28 AM Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] Hello and the Weather Cathy and Donald, Great that you got new windows that should help the electric bill. At one point I tried switching to fluorescent bulbs, but didn't see a difference on my bill. Now I only use a couple fluorescent bulbs: one on the back patio because I leave it on all the time, and the other in the fan because it is too high to change regularly. My eyesight is sure worse since I started my job that uses only fluorescent bulbs. They are very bad for the eyes, skin and lungs. I also avoid things made in China as they have defied all the safety laws, and the US doesn't care what comes into this country, unless it is less expensive medication! Yea Canadian meds! It is all about the almighty dollar. Makes me sick. I can be frugal in other ways like walking instead of driving, mending clothes instead of replacing them, making new things out of discarded clothing, (quilts, shopping bags), and saving buttons to use on sewn items or crafts. Remember Grandma's button box? I'd sure love to get ahold of it now. What fun we had sifting through her buttons. Most of them had been used on clothes, probably things purchased at the thrift store. In one of her old diaries she said she bought the boys coats for 35 cents at a second-hand shop. This was in the mid-1930s. I'm pretty sure it was the Salvation Army. Not sure when they started. She also ripped out zippers from discarded clothing to reuse. Grandma also saved "oleo" tubs and styrofoam trays that fruit used to come on. She was "green" before her time I guess.
Made me giggle reading all of this. I have jars and jars of old buttons, along with hook and eyes, old zippers and the like. Even the lace was cut off of underwear that was the fashion in the 20's and 30's even in the less expensive ones. Anyone want some buttons??? My step-dad, Ralph Wolf, passed away last Wednesday. He was from Pittsburgh originally, and moved to South Florida I guess in the 50s; not sure. Anyone ever hear of Wolf Family Dairy Farm around the Pittsburgh, PA area? He still had one of their original milk bottles and a few other items. Eventually he worked for McArthur Jersey Farm Dairy until he retired. Ralph worked for the Cherry City Volunteer Fire Dept. and was made an honorary member in 1951. He was a WWII veteran with a purple heart, and also in Knights of Columbus. Until a few months ago, he was quite active, playing several sports ever week, and even winning bowling tournaments. He still had a PA Dutch accent to a certain extent. Mom is doing okay. They were such a cute couple. One major difference in his and my mom's childhood was that Ralph's family never had books, nor read for pleasure. Mom, on the other hand, loved to read. Any time she was assigned a school book to read for school, my grandma would read it first to make sure it was fit to read! That cracks me up. I think Grandma just wanted an excuse to read something "worldly" without interference from Papa. Judy
