What was the age for men and woman or was it the same? Sally Sally- It would depend on the state/colony and what their laws were. In this case I might have misspoken though as Betsy was married at age 21 to John Ross. Betsy married John at Hugg's Tavern in Gloucester City, NJ not too far from where I live, and although the tavern was torn down some years ago the hearth in front of which they were married was disassembled and reassembled at the Gloucester County Historical Society. The reason I thought she was underage was because NJ didn't normally require marriage bonds unless the parties were underage--and there IS an existing marriage bond for Betsy and John. The main reason she was DIS MOU as the Quakers call it was because the disowned for Marriage Out of Unity. She married a non-Quaker. Ordinarily she could have come back to the meeting and condemned her action in marrying out of her faith and they would have taken her back--but she never did.
