Don When came to Ft Huachuca in 1961, Sierra Vista had a population of just over 6,000..It had one red light in town, The M.I. (Military Inn Bar) on main Street was the hang out for the GI's night life. I was assigned to Hq Co 6470th in the Cable TV Section. I just completed TV School at Ft Monmouth, NJ...We maintained the Cable System for the quarters. I left there Aug 1962 for Alaska, was Chief Engr Channel 8, Wildwood Station, Kenai, Alaska.. That station closed in Oct 63 and finished my Tour as Special Service NCOIC. Assigned back to Ft Huachuca Aug 64, assigned to Hq ERDA (Electronic Research Development Agency). We worked out of Greely Hall (2d floor). That closed down 1965. transferred to Hq USAEPG (Service Test Division (STD)), as operations Sgt until I transferred to Hq & Hq Co USAEPG as 1st Sgt Oct 67. Left Ft Huachuca for Vietnam September 1968, when I returned in Sep 69 assigned to US Army Advisor Group, Phoenix as Sr Advisory for 6224 USAR School until my Retirement Apr 30, 07. Been living in Great Phoenix Area since. I agree, it grows on you staying in Arizona.
