Hi Linda,    Try an APC or Belkan brand surge protector for home electronics. Mine were about $30 at Office Max or Office Depot, but can get anywhere. Mine are 1770 Joules for the computer, phone, printer/fax and a couple extra spaces. They have warranties for up to $10,000 that come with the surge protector. We have whole house surge protection, individual major appliances and DVDs,VCRs and satelite boxes hooked up to APC or Belkan.
