Here in Northern Indiana we've had high winds with some blowing snow. Suffering from a bad case of stiff neck. I get it good about twice a year and this is one of those times. Its no fun walking around like Igor. :-/ Rick B ----- Original Message ----- From: Don Churchfield To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, December 08, 2009 11:01 AM Subject: [PD-LIFE] Winter weather Once again Arizona has been hit hard by a winter storm. We don't have an snow at our elevation here in the southern part of the state, but I imagine we will see snow in the higher elevations when the clouds clear away. The northern part of the state is pretty much shut down because of heavy snowfall and high winds. We did have high winds last night, at times we had gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour. The neighbor behind us lost about 24 feet of fence but the only damage we had was the safety net on my grand daughters trampoline got blown off. I can fix that, though. A few things did get re-arranged in my outdoor kitchen, but that is easy to remedy. We did get a little ran, but doesn't seem to be very much. There are some power lines down but not in our district. The power went off momentarily through the night, but only for a few seconds. There are lots of businesses in town that had plate glass windows blown out or damaged. Sure hope it doesn't start up again today. Right now we have about 10 mile per hour winds, and that is not bad. Don in AZ
I have been reading all the messages about the weather in various parts of the country. I am in IOWA, and believe you me, we got stomped on yesterday and last night!! My hubby went out to blow the snow this morning---took him 2 hours to blow it out, and our drive isn't all that big. Plus the danged stuff was clear up to his knees!! You should see the NE corner of my garage roof---there is a pyramid on that corner that is HUGE!! I just laughed last night when I looked out and saw that!! It was funny. Needless to say there wasn't any school at all today--and they dismissed at 11:30 yesterday. So we have had a BORED 16 year old girl at home with us---driving us around the bend, so to speak!! Sigghhh!! I need to get busy and do more genealogy, but I have also been trying to get things rounded up for Christmas. Most of my family lives out in UT, where I am sure they are getting snow, too. Which means I better get busy and get things mailed out there. I came up with a different idea this year for gifts for my granddaughters. When my Mom died, she left me her big jewelry box full of things. She loved jewelry, and bought nice stuff at the jewelry stores. It is just sitting there in the box, and I don't wear any of it. So I went through it, sorted out a bunch of gold and silver chains, and took them to the jewelry store to be cleaned. I am going to pass them along to the girls now, rather than have all of the things probably tossed out when I am gone. This way they will know it belonged to their great-grandmother, and some from me, too. I hope they will appreciate the things--I thought it was a good idea! Hope they will, too! Hope all of you terrific "listers" have a terrific Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!! And I am trying to stress to my family to do more things for others less fortunate this year---that way we can pass along our Christmas wishes to others. Stay warm everyone!! Janice in NW Iowa
Cathy, I would love to send you some of our cold weather. Having lived in PA for 21 years and in countries around the world that had the same kind of weather, we enjoy the warmer weather here in AZ, but it does get cold. The coldest I have seen here is 18 above zero, and that is cold! We do miss the snow at times, and I don't mind driving in it, but the people is Southern AZ don't know how to drive in the snow. I drove coal truck in PA for a while, and believe me, that could be a challenge at times. We are three miles from Fort Huachuca, and the weather station there reported wind gusts to 94 miles an hour the other night. Of course, the fort is a little higher elevation and closer to the mountains. It is also more wide open than we are downtown, so that accounts for the difference. We had 74 mile an hour gusts downtown. Don in AZ

Well, Trish go & get some salt, from Lowe's & spread onto it. You'll be fine, just problem solve as to what to do. Yes, this too, shall pass. Yes, I would imagine your used to the not hardly changing CA weather. My husband was there for 7 years in San Diego, & now I'm in Central FL. Sunny, winter days when there is no wind are actually sort of balmy and pleasant. He and his wife are both in the medical field and work strange hours and so I've always done their driveway, too. Both houses have been through a lot this year, so we have become better friends. When the elderly gentleman across the street was still alive, I would go blow out the end of their drive and then let him do the rest. The previous neighbor directly across from me used to help, too; but the new owner just takes care of himself and that's it. He is young. The winter days I dislike the most are when it storms hard enough that I have to blow the driveway out two or three times. Becky, Hi! Well, I hope you find the decorations! And glad you remembered my Wrights, but as far as known I have no one from dayton. Mine are from Beaver County, PA & East Liverpool, Columbiana Co, OH. Mine was John D. Wright (unique name eh!) I just wish I could go work on mine there now, & it doesn't seem like I'm going to be there very loong next summer to really work on it either! Darn! Oh well, hopefully when I do get there to work on it, the paperwork will be there. (Maybe I need to get to local LDS Library?!) Just finding the time nowadays! Hoping that you all in the midwest getting the snows, will be driving carefully! But sounds like it's about time for you all to get your colder weather, so drive carefully, & stay home if you can't travel! Don, I got a bulletin that the snow was headed our way, so I asked that it get sent somewhere else - I didn't care where, as long as I didn't see it. It must have been Arizona's turn in the barrel. LOL Seriously: I am very thankful that no one was hurt and what damages you received were minimal. I know that Arizona, like some other states, are ill-equipped to handle snow when it falls somewhere other than the mountains. I pray that it gently melts away and that you have no more 'freak' storms. WOW! The weather patterns are surely unusual this year. We have only a tiny bit of snow on the ground here in upstate NY on the PA border. I am thankful that we don't have more because I am truly not fond of winter and we will soon enough have plenty of it. Usually, when we start out mildly here, we end up paying a big price for it later on in January-February. The Wooly Bear Caterpillar I saw was light on both ends and very dark in the center, and so far its prediction is true. Stay warm. It is a little better here today, still a little bit windy, but not bad at this time. The sky has cleared up a bit, but we still have a high wind advisory until midnight tonight. The northern part of the state is equipped for handling snow as that is common there, but what complicated things there was the high winds. Flagstaff in northern AZ is a ski area during the winter, so maybe this snow will help them. As for us, we don't usually get a lot of snow in the southern part of the state at the elevation where we live. We are at 4,600 feet above sea level. We do usually get maybe one or two inches one time during the winter, but it usually melts off right away. We have mountains about five miles behind us that do get a lot of snow. This year, though, we don't know. As far as rainfall, we have only had about half of what we would normally have by this time of the year, so there is a lot of concern about a possible water shortage if we don't get some good moisture this winter. Kathy, I will try to keep this nasty weather from coming your way! Mary, you can keep the snow you have, we don't need any here! We too are thankful that we have not heard of anyone being injured by this storm although there were many accidents in the northern part of the state. From what they have said they were not serious accidents. Don in AZ

Dear Linda, I am so sorry that your father is so ill. Beside the heart attack, your father may have had a stroke which is preventing him from swallowing. That happened to my FIL. He could swallow small amounts of water and ice pops as they melted, but not food. It wasn't until it was too late that they discovered he had had a stroke. Please have them check for that. Like your father, he was pretty much out of it and didn't recognize any one for the most part. Trust in God in this. He will do what is right for you, your father, and your family though you may not agree with it at the time. My prayers are with you and your family.
