    3. Thank you, Rick. Over the years, I had been working on trying to tie Betty into my family line, but our communications were very few and far between. I'll miss Richard. He was a real treasure. Mr. Reed was 92 years of age and was the devoted husband of Betty C. (nee Grimes) for 70 wonderful years. Mr. Reed was born in Newmanstown, PA on July 19, 1916. He graduated from Newmanstown High School in 1933, and later various technical schools. He served in the U. S. Navy, during WWII from 1943 to 1945, aboard the USS Cabot. Mr. Reed worked for much of his life for the U.S. Air Force, where he progressed from repairing flight instruments to managing the purchasing and support of auto pilots. Before he retired, he transferred to working for the U.S. Navy in a similar capacity. He retired from his civil service career in May, 1971. He and his wife Betty moved to Florida in 1973. His hobbies included a love of animals, singing and composing songs, playing the piano, playing golf and in his later years genealogy. Mr. Reed played golf well, and did extensive research i! nto all of the family names in his and his wife's family tree. He traced Betty's and his antecedents back to the water's edge, eventually accumulating information about approximately 160 ancestors. This extensive research will be donated to the Lebanon County Historical Society. Mr. Reed is survived by his wife Betty C. Reed, his children Richard E. Reed Jr. and his wife June Nazarian-Reed, of Potomac, MD, Robert E. Reed and his wife Sherry L. Reed of Exton, PA, Royal Sanders-James and her husband, Richard James of Tampa, FL, and two sisters, Mary Lou Bergman and Loretta Gromis . He is also survived by his grandchildren, Stephanie M. Reed of Philadelphia, PA, Jonathan R. Reed of West Chester, PA, and Elisabeth Christenson and her husband Daniel Christenson, of Lutz, FL as well as his great granddaughter, Mia Grace Christenson and many nieces and nephews. Miss Mia Grace, daughter of Elisabeth and Daniel, brought him considerable joy in his last year while he was plagued with! deteriorating health. Mr. Reed will be laid to rest on July 19, 2009 after a Memorial Service at 2:00 PM, at Millcreek Lutheran Church to be followed by a short graveside service. After the services there will be food and refreshments for all guests at the Millcreek Lutheran Church at about 3:30 PM. Family and all friends are welcome to attend. 3. Mary, I use the oatmeal bread recipe I sent the list a while ago. I add enough flour to be able to kneed and rise once. Punch it down to rest. Butter your hands and pinch off some dough and shape. Cover and let raise again. Bake 15 minutes at 450 the turn down to 400. Bake. 3. On 9 October 2009 we lost a member of our family to a gunshot. John Wayne was 11 and out hunting on a special day Georgia had held for father and sons. John Wayne went out with his grandad and never returned. You see the gun went off and John Wayne died of a gunshot wound to his head. Everything that man could do was done for this youngster. ..all in vain for the Lord had other plans for John Wayne. Knowing that John Wayne was saved just last spring is a comforting joy for us but we will always miss him. 1. [PD-LIFE] Mermaid or whale...
    2. Tracy
    3. Recently, in a large city in France , a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman appeared in the window of a gym. It said, "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?" A middle-aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.   To Whom It May Concern, Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans.) They have an active sex life, get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Bering Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia . Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.   Mermaids don't exist.   If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them, not to mention how could they have sex? Just look at them ... where is IT? Therefore, they don't have kids either. Not to mention, who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store?   The choice is perfectly clear to me: I want to be a whale.   P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver, and a piece of chocolate with my friends. With time, we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room, it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy.   Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, "Good grief, look how smart I am!!!!! ''   tracy :O)

    3. I am saddened by the loss of any child, no matter what the reason. It seems to me that parents in this day and age are pretty lacking in some areas because they are too much 'about me' instead of being about their family. That being said: I was raised on a farm. My father had both a pistol and long guns because he was an avid hunter. I never went near them because #1 they were my dad's; and #2 I would have gotten punished. I don't ever remember being told not to touch them, but I didn't. When I was 18, my father passed away. The pistol came up missing, was later found, and was destroyed by the court. I took over the long guns and took up hunting. I took an NRA Safety Hunting Course. I still have the card somewhere. Later on, I got my pistol license. It is a full carry license, meaning I can carry it on my person wherever it is legal for me to do so. During all the training I have been through, safety was the no. 1 aspect, including teaching children what to do and what not to do when they see any kind of firearm laying anywhere unattended. When not on one's person, firearms need to be safely stored under lock and key. There are gun locks to fit every make and model of pistol and long gun that is made. I have trigger locks for every firearm; I have a locking pistol safe; and I have a locking gun safe, both with combination locks. I don't have any children, and rarely have children in my house...... but still I follow the rules. It is irresponsible not to take precautions. As with every thing else, we all make decisions every day about every movement, every thought, every deed, and what we will/will not do. Guns don't kill people. People kill people; either directly, or through stupidity, foolishness, or irresponsibility. We each decided what pathway we will take. Kathy, perhaps you could go down and talk to whoever is in charge at the police station in the town where your ex-SIL lives. Tell them what you witnessed. Tell them what you know and ask them if there is anything you can do to protect your grandchildren. NY just passed a law this year that mandates proper storage of firearms in the home, which now makes the parent or owner of the firearm fully responsible. I'm not sure of the laws in Ohio, but it might not hurt to check with the police. They should know. Often times, the police will conduct an investigation and not bring you into it. It wouldn't hurt to check. While you pray for your grandson, say a prayer for your ex-SIL. He needs it, too. Maybe one day he will see the light. 3. Mary,    My family too had guns in the house as I was growing up. I can't remember a specific time being told not to mess with the guns but never did. We were showed how to correctly handle them and allowed to feel them in our hands (unloaded of course). We were told, "DO NOT ever point a gun at anyone!". Added later was the, "unless you plan to use it". My mom did not allow us to even point our fingers (in the pistol fashion), or sticks or toy guns  at anyone during play. She said it might go off! I believe that bit was tongue-in-cheek. Even today we don't "point" at anyone and the youngest is 40! I've always tried to instill that in my niece and nephew and then the greats but their "other" side saw things differently.    I get extremely nervous round people handling guns. I know how to do it correctly but don't know for sure if THEY know. A couple weeks back my hubby's friend came over (been drinking) and after a while he showed me his new handgun he carries in his glove box. I was almost sick from nerves. He did show me it was unloaded and the chamber empty but I was still scared until it was put away.    We too would have been punished if caught "playing" with a gun without supervision.   tracy --- On Wed, 1/6/10, Mary wrote: I was raised on a farm.  My father had both a pistol and long guns because he was an avid hunter.  I never went near them because #1 they were my dad's; and #2 I would have gotten punished.  I don't ever remember being told not to touch them, but I didn't.
