Mary and All, I can relate to what you said in your e-mail. We are originally from Pa. We were transferred to Az. We went thru all kinds of weather for the 40 years we lived there. I want to clear up the impression that we in the Southwest are not able to handle snow, ice and floods. The Phoenix area is well equipped to handle excessive rain. There are pumps installed in the underpasses in our Freeway system. People can get sandbags given out by the fire department. If necessary the Red Cross opens up shelters .. You can't stop water from flowing, you have to go with the situation. As far as the high country, The highway department has all the plows, cinders and salt they need. When there is a lot of snow, as in this last storm, they simply close the roads until the plows can do the plowing that is necessary. Because of all the dry washes in the desert it is dangerous when they start run. Flash floods come on you before you know it. We have the stupid motorist law in effect. If someone tries to go around the barricades and cross a flooded area and gets stuck and has to be rescued, they are liable for the cost of the rescue. The fee can run as high as $2,000. So you see Arizona is not as backward as some people think. When we moved here and went back to visit family in Pa. We had to explain to my MIL that the Indians do not live in Tepees along side the roads anymore. I will leave you with that. Anna in AZ In a message dated 1/25/2010 10:09:11 A.M. Anna, you are right. I didn't mention the snow, but here in the southeastern part of the state, the mountains are covered with several feet of snow. That is great because we will get some good runoff from all that snow, and that will really help our water situation here. I must say the mountains sure are beautiful. Our weather was really nice here today but a little bit cool. It is getting down cold for us again tonight, but this might not last too long. I bet the rim country is beautiful. We spent a week in Payson a couple years ago, and want to go there again sometime in the near future. Got to do some good trout fishing on the rim. Mary, Yes, I can identify with your dilemma of having a smaller child around. My son, N is so active, but am successful in getting him to play with guys, cowboys & Indians or army guys nowadays more & more! I used to do that allot, with Johnny west & horses when I was way older! But also good things come out of disasters, like a nillness with families so far apart nowadays. Just wantin to put my two cents in! Take care, All, Cathy About the only good thing I've heard of is a wedding in the planning stages for fall in OH. I'm certainly hoping to go because its for a nephew that I felt I helped raise for some of his childhood, because his mother worked, & I watched him grow! I've not been able to be near him lately, so been wanting to help there somehow, so I pray somehow I can go! ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Sayman <marysaerie@stny.rr.com> To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 4 Jan 2010 15:50:59 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] Any body out there??? I live in Ohio and can't make it either. Darn it! But I certainly agree with your last sentence, Karen..... SUPPORT YOUR LIBRARIES!! A side note... We've noticed that more teachers are telling the kids they can't just use the internet for information with their projects or papers they have to do. They are telling them that they have to go to the library and look up the information in books!! Imagine that??!! :) :) Something old-fashioned is new again. :) Stay warm and dry....its raining here again, and very windy. Then cold again in a few days. Trish, I have been watching the weather reports about the storms in CA, and yes, some of our weather is coming from your area. I feel for you as I know what it is like to get more rain in a short time than you normally get all year. We have been in that situation in the past, but not for a couple years now. We have had a slow rain for most of the day, but they are stating that we can expect up to three inches of snow tonight. I guess we won't do much tomorrow, but the roads should not be too bad as we have not had much freezing weather, and the frost has not gone into the roadbeds as far as I know. Of course, at higher elevations there will definitely be plenty of black ice. There is one hill, Texas Canyon, on Interstate 10 in eastern AZ that gets lots of black ice on the road. Of course, the roads in the northern part of the state get lots of snow and ice. I know what you mean about the people driving crazy on wet roads. I left early for the church today as I knew the roads would be wet and there was a possibility of flooded washes. People flew by me like I was sitting still. I don't understand what people are thinking in bad weather. It has been cloudy all day, which of course reduces the visibility quite a bit. It amazes me how many people don't turn their lights on in inclement weather, I guess they think they can see well enough and don't care if the other drivers see them. Mary, I sure hope the new fences stay up also. One of them is completed but the other one isn't yet. We are hoping they will finish it the first of the week as we need to have that fence there to give us and the people behind us some privacy, and also to improve out wind break. As it is now with the back side open and the new block wall about 15 feet from the side of our house, there is a wind tunnel effect on that side of the house. The new back fence when it is completed, should reduce or eliminate that effect. We have sliding windows, and the wind was so strong through there last night that it was causing the sliding window to bow, allowing a gap to exist between the frames of the fixed and sliding windows. I expected a window to pop out, but it didn't, just got some wind into the dining room. Yesterday afternoon we did have a beautiful rainbow. It was so bright and complete that people were talking about it at church today. Well, enough for now. Don in AZ
Oh, My Goodness! What is going on!? The weather patterns have been very strange of late. Janice, my heart aches for you and your situation. I hope you have some family or good neighbors who keep a check on your. Don, I hope your new fence stays put so you don't have to replace what you already have up. Trish, I am happy for you that the sun came out and hope that is a sign that the storms are moving away from you. My prayers are with you all. Keep us posted. Tornado watches, hurricane force winds, hail, pouring rain, flooding, thunder and lightening...have made this week rather interesting. I was filming the pouring rain and ended up filming a lightening strike about 1/8 mi (max) from us...scared me, the dog and a few others and made my hair stand up! So far we have had over 9 inches of rain since Sunday evening---we usually get about 15" TOTAL for the year in a "good" year (from July 1-June 30). This is not normal. The last time we had this much rain in such a short period of time was 1998...when it rained every day from January into mid-March...I was sure that year my feet would grow webs so I could paddle like a duck to get around! Most of our creeks are threatening to crest over their banks---something that doesn't happen often. Freeways and streets are shut down because of flooding. Power has been out to friends in the mountains for 3+ days---they are used to it b/c the power company figures they can wait, so they have generators to get by with until repairs are made. But that stupid motorist law...we should think about it here. People leaving no distance between other cars, rushing thru flooding waters and hydroplaning. I'm really glad it only snows here once a decade or so, or we would have more problems because people here can't drive in rain, let alone snow! In early Dec when we had temps of low 20F's several people died from black ice and their own stupidity! I also read that Sheriffs in LA County were serving an arrest warrant at a house the other day, some guy in it (the cops don't know who he was, but he was NOT the guy they were looking to serve) bolted out the back of the house. They gave chase, the guy ended up jumping in a control channel to get away from them, which was running at full force. They put up nets to try and catch him downstream, but they lost sight of him after he went under for the 2nd time and suspect they'll pick up his body in a few days when things settle down in the channel. Am sure being dead is better than any prison term?!?! Stupid! In the moments it has taken me to write this, the sun has finally come out. We are still expecting more rain for the next 7+ days, but the sun is a nice respite. Still need our galoshes---anything that isn't concrete is muddy. But I will admit, I don't have to shovel rain! Heckuva lot better than snow, tho it has been in the low 40F's here, so it's darn close! We had sun for a few minutes today. We ran over to the coast to watch the waves from a safe distance, had lunch and just returned home under threat of clouds and more rain, fog and mist. I don't think we'll get more sun any time soon, much more than a few minutes at a time. Those waves are just so powerful and beautiful! Don-some of what you're getting is coming from us in NorCal, some from a little farther south of us. I just got a news bulletin stating that near Tucson a woman drove into a flooded wash and is on top of her vehicle waiting to be rescued. She may have to pay a fine and pay for the emergency rescue services. Don in AZ
Janice, you certainly are not raining on my parade. You sure have had it rough this winter and it sounds like there is much more to come. One of the problems we have here in AZ is when we get hurricane-force winds there is much destruction. We live at 4,600 feet and are surrounded by mountain ranges on all four sides. The winds will rock back and forth between the mountain ranges and usually cause a lot of damage and downed power poles. When we have heavy rains we have a lot of flooding. We have dry washes and rivers, but when it rains they fill up quickly because the ground is so hard. The rivers have bridges and would seem to be high enough to be safe in a rain storm, but a few years ago we had so much rain that the water was over the bridges and caused many roads to be closed. There are four roads leading out of the town where we live, and all four cross a river. During our last flood and four roads were closed. The emergency services in our town are excellent, but we could not get supplies in for a few days. That has only happened two times in the 30 years that we have lived here, so I guess we can count our blessings. Dry washes are a different problem. Most of them do not have bridges, and they flood quite easily as heavy rains do not soak into the ground. Heavy rains result in flooded washes and closed roads. AZ has enacted a "stupid motorist" law because people will drive around barricades and try to drive through flooded washes. Of course, many get stranded and some have been swept away by rapid flowing water. If we have two or three inches of rainfall we experience flooding. We don't get much snow where we live, but when we do, it pretty well shuts everything down as people don't know how to drive in it. Growing up in Western PA, I learned to drive in the snow, but most of the southern AZ natives don't know how to drive in it. Being a military town, we also get people living here from all over the world, and many of them don't know how to drive in the snow also. I laughed the first time we saw snow here when we were stationed at Fort Huachuca. During our first winter we had three inches of snow and they closed down most of the fort and sent all but mission-essential people home. Part of the reason for that, though, was because of the driving risk for many people, and the fact that we are not equipped for clearing roads of snow. Still, Janice, I will take our weather over yours. I had enough snow growing up and living in countries where we had heavy snow. Right now, though I will say we are thankful for any moisture we can get, rain here in the valley and snow in the mountains as we only had less than half of our annual rainfall last year, and water shortages are quite possible this year. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. Don in AZ
