Trish, Yikes! Hold onto your hat, Minerva!! Not that we wouldn't want to see you out in our neck of the woods, but I'd suggest a different method of flight to get over the mountains between NorCal and us. Hi, Tracy. Wow! What a storm this has been - a true, blue Nor'Easter!!! We haven't had one of those in a while; and I always dread them. Here where I live in Vestal, NY, we got about 2 feet of snow. As one progresses south and easterly, it gets really bad. There are 225,000 people out of power in NYS. Some areas have had no power since Tuesday. I spoke with one lady today south of me that got hit with 6 feet of snow and she had no power. She told me her husband was out trying to dig them out and that she and the kids (I heard a small baby crying lustily in the background) were all weary, bored, and cold. I told her I would say a prayer for her that they get the power on soon for her and the rest of the people around her. I spoke with others down closer to the city who told me there are trees down all over and that the trains aren't running because of downed trees and lines. My husband and the next door neighbor have been sharing the snow blowing duty for them, us, and the lady across the street who is elderly. This morning, the two of them got out and did 5 driveways and helped two others on the street. Our little snow-blower is only a two-stage, but it moves a lot of snow. Everyone is impressed with it. I've had it for about 18 years and I bought it used. I take good care of it, though, making sure it gets tuned up and gets parts replaced when it needs it. I think it has been in the repair shop only two or three times. I hope it never wears out because I don't think I could find another one like it. They just don't make things like they used to! I pray that everyone is safe and warm and surviving these storms. Hey! Glad things are good up your way now, Becky! We've been getting down near freezing at least, which is highly unusual, & I'm loving it! My daughter has shown up finally & am worried about her, but she's here at least! She says that she'll be over again next week, so we'll see. And understand that you guys got more snow. Staying home can be a cool thing too! Enjoy the beauty of the season! Its just like the summer, when its pouring rain ya just stay inside until it's over, though sometimes when it's not lightening I get out with my umbrella 7 play like you all play with the snowmen! Stay warm ya all! Hugs to you! We had had two feet fall overnight, and the plows made a hard-packed wall at the end of my driveway that was about three feet wide and pickup truck hood high. I paced and paced and paced until the driveway was cleared out; and it was then I realized how trapped I had felt. The minute I knew I could get out of the house, even walking, all that tenseness and anxiety went away. I've not ever felt that way since. It was not a good feeling at all. When I was a kid, we used to get snowed in for at least two weeks every winter; and we used to have to tunnel to the barn to milk the cows. Helicopters flew over every day checking for any emergency situations and dropping supplies to people. We used to lay branches on top of the snow to spell out 'help' or 'SOS'. I remember my dad spelling out 'OK' with branches; and our neighbors had some of the first snow mobiles - Ski-Doo, I think they were called back then. They would pull a huge toboggan behind them and go from house to house taking shared supplies around. Some people baked bread; some gave butter, milk, and eggs; whatever any one needed, we shared, if we had it. Of course, tankers couldn't get in to get the milk, so all the farmers dumped whatever was not needed by others. My father also worked outside our farm as a master machinist. Can you imagine what would happen to him today if he could not get to work for two weeks? I had illness in my little one over the weekend too, so I've had things going on here too! How do you all get over, letting you kids move out!? That's what I'm experiencing & be anxious & stuff any suggestions, other than to work to find a job!!. That's what I've decided I'm going to do, & perhaps volunteer again, at my church's thrift shop. At least for the rest of this school year! I guess if you look at it, everyone is experiencing some loss in their lives, just different things, jobs, children, & death! I had one of my older neighbors die, & my daughter went with me & not spent much since then. She has gotten the job she needs to get ahead of the game of life with a little grit & determination, so I'm grateful I've encouraged her & pushed too! Now let her spread her wings & fly. I'm so proud of her! ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Sayman <marysaerie@stny.rr.com> To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 8 Feb 2010 10:33:30 -0500 (EST) Subject: [PD-LIFE] Snow Janice, I remember a few years ago, we had one of the snowiest winters we had had in a long, long time. We were running out of places to put the stuff. I had never felt claustrophobic before - maybe trapped - is a better word. Today, there is too much intolerance of things not under our control; and too much tolerance of things that are. Together, they have bred the societal attitudes with which we must deal. Hi, Gang! Well, it looks like we are going to get a bit of that nasty old white stuff starting tomorrow afternoon, through into Thursday, with the heaviest concentration being on Wednesday. I took my car over for much-needed new tires and brakes tonight. I'll get her back tomorrow afternoon before 5 pm. Just in time!!! We went to supper after dropping the car off and when I got home, I checked the snow blower to make sure the tank was full and it was ready to ramble! I got clearance from the eye doc to do snow blowing, so I'm ready!!! Hugs to all, Mary in her winter Aerie in Vestal, NY
Well, i have some friends that I've asked them to help me out, & went to my mtoher-in-law today, & she said she'd talk to her also! Thanks, everything yes, seems to be spiraling out of control, right now! Thanks everyone! Yes, i did go to church & made a promise & have so far remembered, to say a pray today & everyday. I even got some books that just so happened were authored by a guy that has a Theology degree, that's a CW reenactor, that we have met at the CW Reenacting events, that I've mentioned earlier. They have different Bible Verses in it today when I was reading it. And another awesome thing that I must share today that was AWESOME! I have been thinkin of my aunt Peg that in living in Cleveland, OH, & just thought well I will chat to see how she's doing, & think of someone else today, to cheer myself up! The thing was ended up I spoke to her like 5 minutes, then all of sudden she said, "Can you hold on someone is at the door, & said yes, then all of a sudden I heard a familiar voice, & sure enough she said to my sister, I'm talking to to a member of your family, & she's naming everyone, & she's like yea, Cathy! Lin gets on the phone & chats for a moment, & I said, it's good to hear you & I'll let you go to chat to her. Aunt Peg told me that she'd heard about my nephew, Linda's son's wedding & told me, 7 I hadn't had a chance to hear what day! I'm so looking forward to going to Oh allot more now! And Aunt peg had been having a bad day, so was glad to hopefully have brightened her day! It was so Awesome to have talked with her! Just like you guys too! Well, my husband has a different schedule! , now, this week, which is alittle nicer for everyone in the house, & gets home sooner, to spend with us, so so far it's been alittle nice so far this week! So things are looking up! Thanks for the encouragement & sentiments, I agree, time will let her know the right path for her life! I know that too! I do firmly in letting it go, but it's just doing it! I plan to survive for sure! Thanks again, gals. Hugs to you all, Cathy Helping me see the bright side is so great! ----- Original Message ----- From: Russ & Sally <scott1@embarqmail.com> To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 8 Feb 2010 18:00:32 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] Snow HI Kathy: I too worry about everything my friends tell me it too not to worry. Thanks, Kathy. Took me a lifetime to learn it but helps with the grandkids. I was always pulled between helping too much or if I held off, being accused of not caring. That ever 'fine line'. Excellent words Connie. That was beautifully said. Yes, Cathy, you did answer your own question. Long story short...I went to counseling for a tragic loss in our family in 1998. then she got around to telling me I worry too much about things I can't do anything about. The kids moving out, them driving to work on I75 during bad weather/good weather, getting a divorce...just normal things. She is a Christian counselor..she said..Kathy, you know the best thing you could ever do for your kids?? What?? Pray for them that GOD is always with them. Just pray for them always, everyday. So, I do. I'm better, but I still worry...only I put it into GOD's hands. Funny, how you know that is what you should do, but sometimes you forget. It is so easy that way to handle everything that comes your way. Maybe this was a "TMI" moment, if so, I'm sorry...but I truely believe GOD gets us through everything when we need help. Thumbs up to you and your understanding. Many share you comments. We were running out of places to put the stuff. I had never felt claustrophobic before - maybe trapped - is a better word. Of course, tankers couldn't get in to get the milk, so all the farmers dumped whatever was not needed by others. My father also worked outside our farm as a master machinist. Can you imagine what would happen to him today if he could not get to work for two weeks?
