    3. OK Rick are you out there?? We want to have a virtual birthday party for all the PA Dutch people on our list. Is your kitchen table available?? Cathy is making a German Chocolate Cake with cocoanut, Mary a fresh fruit platter with an awsome yummy dip. I will bring a white cake with a mocha icing and fresh strawberries. Can you put on a pot of coffee and one of tea? Anybody else out there want to join us around the table? 3. Has any one been to the Christmas Museum? It's actually the National Christmas Center Museum and Family Attraction on Lincoln Highway (Route 30) going East out of Lancaster in Paradise. It is an amazing place that steps back in time. They actually have a JJ Newbury store set up with all the toys and decorations and anything and everything one can imagine from as many as 75 years ago. There were many, many items that brought back memories of my childhood. Dale and I spent about two hours taking the tour. It is a fabulous place with many displays from all over the world. They even take you back to the cobble stone streets of Jerusalem. Here is their website: www.nationalchristmascenter.com. It is well worth the price of the $11 admission. 1. [PD-LIFE] PA Dutch themed Fiction
    2. Karen Fox
    3. When it comes to reading with a PA Dutch theme, there is a terrific cozy mystery series that I can recommend. A cozy mystery is genre of light mysteries, in the vein of "Murder She Wrote" rather than hard boiled, more explictly violent, dark thriller mysteries. Anyway, there is a series by Tamar Myers, Pennsylvania Dutch Mysteries with Recipes. The star of the book series is Magdalena Yoder, an Amish-Mennonite sleuth who runs a bed and breakfast (the converted family homestead) in the mythical town of Hernia.. To me, Hernia sure sounds a lot like Adamstown in Lancaster County. Anyway, each book is peppered with actual recipes. The ones I've tried have all turned out delicious. There are 18 books in the series so far, starting with "Too Many Crooks Spoil The Broth" (1993). In Feb 2010, the latest volume was released in hardcover, "Butter Safe Than Sorry". Magdalena is written as a smart, no-nonsense and down-to-earth woman with an exasperated sense of humor. Tamar Myers was raised as a Mennonite and grew up in the Belgian Congo, where her parents were missionaries. She has also written another cozy mystery series set in the Carolinas and centers around the adventures of Abigail Timberlake, the proud owner of a Charlotte (and later Charleston) antique store, the Den of Antiquity (Den of Antiquity series). and some "orphan" (non-series) novels. Check out her Magdalena Yoder books! You get a free meal on your birthday only, except when it falls on a Sunday, you get it on Monday ... no exceptions! We LOVE it out that way. We do have intentions to go to Sight and Sound to see Joseph. We see all the shows when they come out. They now have an identical theatre built in Branson, MO that runs similar shows. After one show finishes here, it may open out there. My favorite story of shopping roadside stands happened over 20 years ago. While my husband was buying up a basket of potatoes, I called to him to also buy a basket of apples. The Amish mother talked Dutch to a young child pointing and giving instructions. No hearing, the child asked, "What 3 times?" Then, my husband (having understood the Dutch) said to the child, "Your mother wants you to bring a large bag for the apples!" Well! 2. HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY SALLY!!! If I don't wish it to you now, I will forget. :) For one month, we will be the same age. Come April 4, I'm older than you by one year. ;):) Best wishes. 3. June I have read some of Beverly and am now reading an Amish Christmas. Good book. I love reading the books. I put myself right in the story. I am in the background taking it all in. But nothing makes me happier to just spend time there. I have brought so many of my girlfriends to Amish Co. Now we all go for a Christmas Shopping weekend in November.. I will do anything to get there!!! I draged my best girlfriend there and now she is so hooked she makes her sister come from Florida to meet us every October. Have you noticed that I get there about once a month!! OK I won't bore you anymore. I am going to watch the beautiful dresses on the Oscars Red Carpet. Have a good evening. 3. Cathy I know you told me but I will be 62 next Sunday and that is my excuse for not remembering. I have cousins in Dunellen (West Coast) Friends in Spring Hill (West Coast) Friends in Jacksonville. Cousins in very south Fla but I can't remember the town. He is a policeman and she his sister is going to college finishing this year. At one time my husband really wanted to move down but now thinks we just might stay in NJ. I didn't want to go then but now most of my friends have moved to Pa about an hour away. Just can't hop in the car and visit them in my PJ's for a cup of tea anymore!!!! Those were the fun days. Now we go for the weekend!!! What town do you live in in Florida? The road trip sounds wonderful. I try to find any reason to go to Berks and Lancaster Co. that I can. Just keep the communications open with your daughter and tell her there will always be a light burning in the window for her. She is probably trying to make it on her own and in this day and age it is really hard. I have a London Broil cooking very slowly in the crock pot. Of course there are tons of potatoes!!! It smells so good, even the cat is looking hungry. Have a good day. 1. [PD-LIFE] Don, and reading glasses
    2. Mary Sayman
    3. Don, I am glad that everything went well for you with your surgery. I am sure you will be all settled in with new glasses and all used to your new vision in fine fettle. About the only difference I have is that I can see pretty clearly out of my left eye now since I had them leave me a little bit nearsighted like I was. That will prevent me from having to wear reading glasses. I went through that once..... the reading glasses bit. I was wearing contacts and they told me I needed to start wearing reading glasses. Well I bought one pair. Yep, just one. It took me less than a day to need another pair because that one pair was just never where I needed them to be. I think I ended up with about four pairs because I needed one at work, one at home, one in the car, and one in my purse. I tried wearing one of the eyeglass keepers around my neck, but the glasses always seemed to be in the way, banging into something every time I bent over, or I was trying to dig them out from under a jacket or a coat. Uggh!!! The next time I needed an Rx change, I went back to regular glasses. I figured if I needed to wear glasses anyway, I might as well just go back. It was a whole lot less frustration! I hope you have better luck with reading glasses than I did. But you men always seem to have a pocket to put them in to keep track of them. Hugs, Mary -----Original Message----- From: padutch-life-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:padutch-life-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Don Churchfield Sent: Saturday, March 06, 2010 11:51 AM To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Subject: [PD-LIFE] Sure is quiet I had the surgery on my other eye done Thursday, everything seems to be going well. I am trying to get used to not wearing glasses, but I will end up getting new ones in about four weeks because of astigmatism. I can see good without them, and can do well with reading glasses, but it all seems a little strange. I am having to learn some things since the implanted lenses are for distance vision. I tried taking some pictures with my digital camera yesterday and discovered I have to use my reading glasses to do that. My new glasses will be bifocals, so that should not be a problem then. 2. For all of you people who would like to be able to spend more time in Amish Country, a great substitute might be reading some books based in an Amish setting. I enjoy the writings of Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetter. Many of the writings are set in Lancaster County, Pa with some based in Ohio or Indiana settings. I met Wanda on a book signing trip at Shady Maple several years ago. Good's store always features their new releases! June In a message dated 3/6/2010 10:17:36 P.M. Just like wishing I could be locked up in Berks Co Historical Society I wish I could be able to visit Amish Co, for a week to visit as I please. Take your wife, it is a wonderful experience that give me such peace. I am sure she will enjoy it. 3. Yes, Sally, I plan on doing that in the future. I grew up not far from New Wilmington and Volant, PA which are Amish communities, so I was around Amish people for many years. When my sister made Civil War costumes they lived in Wakeman, Ohio, so she bought a lot of material at the Amish community in Ohio. They made a trip to Lancaster County once a year to shop there. Of course, they knew all the good places to eat and shop. June, there is also a lot of good reading on the Internet about Amish people. I have looked at a bit of it, but haven't had much time to get into it thoroughly. Maybe some day I can do that. Don in AZ
