Amen to the 'no more' snow. I want to add my greetings also to the birthday girls and a bit more. This Friday, my husband and I will be celebrating our 50 years of marriage. Can't really believe it. At times it seems the days flew but when I think of what all those years have produced, has to be the full load. Our plans for this day have not worked out but that is the way life is. After all these years, you get use to it. Nice to plan but with reality, it may not happen. That is when you use plan B, C and D. One of them will happen. I am content. This could be the best of them all. Family together. Doesn't get better than that. All these short & sweet recipes, i'm going to have to try now ya know! I get balled up with the "rut thing! Those all sounds so good! Gotta get back to my email for awhile, erasing some, I've got over 2,000 ! I'm bad! Later. I'm getting to the be not getting some that was emailed me, so thought, Embarqmail isn't so cool. They say No limit, but missed a email from PA sating my 93 year old friend had died back in February! She I thought was going to be fine, but suspected something one day so called, & chatted to her daughter, about her final time! It was in between all those snow storms in February! She made it home, & she was telling her daughter, it'll be a better day tomorrow for you, & that was it! That was about Feb. 12-13! I'll miss her terribly, but will remember our final visit in summer 200y with my kids, & video taped it with her family, so it'll be a wonderful thing that I can actually see & hear her visiting with me & my kids! A memory will docum! ented & remembered for the rest of my life! 30+ years, since her retirement from working for the state of PA! in Pittsburgh, PA! Here's to you Mrs. Dorothy Lloyd! Acme, PA! I almost went to the 911 memorial that day, but she said she'd call to talk to the man, a cleric there, & sent me the info, but she was afraid, I'd not get home til after dark, but just arrived, about dark in Chester, WVA. Great day trip that day in July 2007 with my rental car & kids in tow! We are finally getting a bit warmer here in Iowa--up to 40 degrees finally!! We have had 96 days of below 40, and most of that was even way below 30, so that is long enough!! Rick, I have a totally different recipe for pea salad, so I will send it along here. 2 cans of peas 6 hardboiled eggs chopped onion to taste sweet pickle relish to taste a couple squirts of yellow mustard Miracle Whip to taste sugar to taste salt and pepper (ditto) Mix altogether and yummmmm!! I like it a bit sweeter than some folks, but also like that little bite of mustard. I mix the onion, relish, mustard, Miracle Whip, sugar, and salt and pepper together first, then gently add the eggs and peas to the mix. Turns out pretty doggone good!! Hope we don't have too much flooding around here. We have had way more snow than we have had for 25 years!! We got way over 6 feet of snow altogether I think. Naturally that wasn't all at one time!! But somehow it seemed like it at the time!! We had about 1 1/2 months where it seemed like every couple of days we would get another 2-5 inches of snow!! And some ice to begin with!! Our soil really never got a chance to have a hard freeze, because we had an ice storm, then lots of snow on top of that. So we are praying that the snow cover will melt slow enough that it will just soak down into the ground. That would be wonderful! I am quite sure the farmers around here would be thrilled!! Run-off can be awful---takes the top soil right down any river or stream. Not good!! Hope everyone is getting springlike weather---I am thrilled to not need to bundle up anymore!! Kathy How are you? Your so funny & appreciate yout light humor! My life is up & down right now, crying then laughing & then keep going! I'm learning! My daughter is so strong willed like me, & can't fight her! She & this couple got away to Kissimmee, which his mother's got a condo there I guess! She had to be back to her job, so she was back by Sunday, but didnt' see her until Monday night after she worked near-by at Mcd's. I was relieved to see her Monday after we had gone to the park with her baby brother! I drove down to check on her! I've been helping at my Op shop again, & really happy to be back there! Just monday's but gives me a place to go & help out, & know I'm needed! It's a great feeling! And meeting such wonderful people! And there's a volunteer's luncheon on March 26 already! Woo hoo! And to take the cake, it's a friday, & my husband's off,. but remembered I've got a doctor's appt, too, so I can maybe just make the doctors, then the luncheon, that aday so that's a relief! By the way, great short recipe, sounds good, pea salad, I read. I went to the freezer & looked & have only alittle, so that'll have to be put in the recipe file, so I can use the peas for my stew tonight! Oh talking about stew, i goofed on it last night! I almost slept in yesterday, but my sons woke me up, & then needed to take a nap, for an hour, but the clincher was a only slept about 45 minutes, but before laid down I put stew meat, onions, & fresh muchrooms in the stew, & then simmered an hour or so, & turned it off before laying down, & had already done up carrots, & celery in a container, I forgot to add the carrots, & celery though, into the stew, & only added potatoes! May all we ate was stew meat, onions, & potatoes! Man was i silly! But you know the guys didn't complain! Though N. did, but he ate some! He's the whiner! Made him sit there anyways! He ate his bread & butter though & some potatoes! And drink. I just added mine to his & put away, becau! se I was sitting there realizing I hadn't added the rest of the vegies. Man things don't always go the way you'd like do they?!!!!!!!!!!!! My life is so topsy-turvy since my daughter is being bad! I'm glad to have your sense of humor at the moments gals, & guys too! My life has been lightened my her not coming around, but feel sometimes like there's something missing! And there is too! And missing some more neighbors that will be bringing my daughter & I togeher to go the funeral again, it's only been a month or longer since his wife died, I think! Good & bad happening all over! Busy & busier! Good to be back, & I'll shut up now! Giggle! Giggle! Hi all, I also like to use froz. peas in my salad. I've got peas in the freezer, and this sounds really really good. Salutations from the frozen Midwest region!! Hi again! This is nothing fancy but this is how my mother fixes carrots occasionally. We had these for supper this evening. Enjoy! Rick B MY MOTHER'S CARROTS 9 carrots 3 Tablespoons butter or margarine salt Peel and chop up the carrots but not too thick. Boil the carrots with some salt in the water until tender. Drain the carrots and place them in a serving bowl with the melted butter. Serve.
Hi everybody! Hope you're doing well these days. We've talked about pea salad in the past here on the list, but I can't recall if I've ever posted my mother's recipe. As we were making it today, I wrote down her ingredients. Enjoy! Rick B MY MOTHER'S PEA SALAD RECIPE 6 hardboiled eggs chopped 1 small onion chopped 1 cup of shredded cheese 1 bag of frozen peas Family Size, boiled mayo Mix all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl or pan. Mix in mayo until moist. Chill in the fridge for awhile and serve. This makes quite a bit so you'll have plenty for 4 people for 2 days.
I faithfully watched "Murder, She wrote" too! Mom and I, and it drove the rest of the family crazy! :o)  Haven't read Stephen King in many years. I'm more into SciFi/Fantasy genre. I like the elves, quests or space themes. I'm reading "Otherland" by Tad Williams right now. It's weird and I don't know if I like it or not. But there are 5-7 books and I'm only on the first. My favorite series would be "Xanth" by Piers Anthony and then "The sword of truth" by Terry Goodkind (which they have made into a series on tv...but I don't think they follow the book to closely).  I always have a book going! tracy --- On Mon, 3/8/10, Mary wrote: Karen, These sound like wonderful books, especially the Myers' series. I loved 'Murder She Wrote' and watched it faithfully every week. I'm not really crazy about the other type of mysteries. My mother loved them and used to read every one she could get her hands on, especially Agatha Christie novels. My gruesome side is reading Steven King books, which I haven't done in a while. I'm on to other venues for a while when I have a chance, reading a few pages at a time in three totally different books. I also borrowed a friend's 'German for Dummies' and 'Spanish for Dummies' books and CDs, so I'm dabbling in learning another language, or at least a few phrases. Any body else doing any reading? Mary from her Aerie
Cathy,   Bryan is doing well. He's been working mega hours (70.5 last week)! This week looks to be the same if it doesn't rain.  He's made some new arrowheads, knife blades and spearheads. When he has time I'll get him to get them out and I'll take pics and send to you. I'm very glad you like the arrowhead!   We are still planning on being down that way again in November. I've got the whole b-day week planned. I'm hoping we can stop by again to visit!  tracy --- On Mon, 3/8/10, Cathy wrote:  & yours Tracy? We just adore the magnet arrowhead you gave us. It's gorgeus!Â
Wow, Cathy! You are always on the go, doing for everyone. I'm sure the gentleman neighbor will appreciate how caring and how giving you are. It is very difficult for older people when they lose their spouses. Some never get over it. Probably keeping busy helps you keep your mind occupied so you don't worry about your daughter so much. My cousin has become a 'grandma' in one of the pre-school classes. She loves it and the children love her. I think that's because she still knows how to be a kid, and still maintain a sense of discipline. Congratulations on the weight loss. I need to get started again. Winters are very bad for me. I want to crawl into my cave and hibernate because of my S.A.D. With the onset of longer days and wonderful sunshine, I am beginning to feel a little better. I'll soon be able to get out and walk the dog again. YAY!!! I have a great dislike for the cold. Part of it is having to put on heavy clothing, boots, gloves, hats, coats, muffs, scarves, heat-exchanger mask......... well you get the picture. Sally, Comparatively speaking, German - for me - is a little more difficult. While I am getting so I recognize the words, it's the Sound of the letters (those umlauts mess me up a lot) together with the pronunciation that gets me. I just keep re-reading until I get it. The books have short conversations in them which are also on the CDs so one can hear exactly how the words are pronounced which I listen to over and over until I can repeat it correctly. It is a process. Where does your correspondent live? Is he from the SEAMAN village area in Germany? If he writes in German, there is a pretty good translator at www.babelfish.com . I use it quite often. Have you tried one of the page-size magnifiers to help with your reading? Actually I had started a book I found that I'd borrowed years ago, but is more appropriate now with my daughter away from the house, called Necessary Losses, By Judith Viorst. Logical thinking is Not my stronger suits! Connecting the dots of understanding isn't easy! Sometimes! Especially between generations, i guess! Maybe that's the key that I'm missed right now in my life! Or just growing pains, & growing up! Each in their own way & times, perhaps! I've always liked the ins & out of the things! It takes me back to having an "A+" on a Phychology paper in H.S. actually learning something, & being proud of myself then! And also getting a "A" in Science, stretching my curiousity to the limit, & succeeding! Maybe that's the key, stretching yourself, & maybe that's the key!? I've always wanted challenges, but never had many in my life, that I truly wanted to succeed at? I was selfish?! Thanks, everyone! Your welcome Mary! My neighbot just lost his wife, is in the hospital, I think he's lost hope, but hope not. I'm going to try to go to the hospital soon! He just misses his wife! He had chemo treatments, maybe find out what he likes to eat & cook for him!? They were such a wonderful couple! I need to watch out for others children, because I love them so much! No matter whose children they are, but it's alittle backward here. They're so defensive! Not like up north! we all shared the responsibility of things there! I'm so glad I'm on this list! The last few days has been wonderful & things are warming up, & already growing, but a nice change, but am still enjoying the weather. My son & the neighbors went to the park & went down to see my daughter, today after she's taken a few days away! And then popped over for a long awaited visit! I'm learning so much patience, but wish I had already, but maybe supposed to be that way in my life at this time! And still losing weight finally! Wonder if the doctor will be surprised that I've lost almost 15 pounds! Woo hoo! And counting! Hoping to get to about 150 or below! Karen, These sound like wonderful books, especially the Myers' series. She has also written another cozy mystery series set in the Carolinas and centers around the adventures of Abigail Timberlake, the proud owner of a Charlotte (and later Charleston) antique store, the Den of Antiquity (Den of Antiquity series). and some "orphan" (non-series) novels. Check out her Magdalena Yoder books!
