    3. Wikipedia defines itself as the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. It states, "The name Wikipedia is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a type of collaborative website which can be directly edited by anyone with access to it) and encyclopedia". I always thought of a portmanteau as a suitcase; but Wikipedia defines it as a a morpheme that fuses two or more words or word parts to give a combined or loaded meaning. In other words, "Wikipedia" is a combination of a wiki web site and an encyclopedia. There are safeguards to allow reversals of editorial mistakes. The Wikipedia History states, "Wiki wiki is a reduplication of wiki, an Hawaiian-language word for fast. I remember the expression "wiki-wiki" from my sojourn in the Hawaiian Islands during WWII. As Joan said, it means quickly; as in "you come wiki-wiki". One of my favorite memories of the colorful language they employed is of the time I heard a policeman tell a kid, "Hey, you fella, one more time I catch you here, I bus' you up". That was a long time ago. 3. Sheila, What county is Bluefield in? I've heard of it! I was in Fairmont, WVA once, but been years!! I was in Hancock County, WVA, during our trip to OH/PA area. We had a blast, but Thanks to family we were able to stay a long time. My kids & I were outside excercising even though the bugs getcha! It was overcast, which is considered a nice day here in the humidity! We were riding our bikes. Thanks for sharing Barry's story. Wow he had lung cancer even & so far so good! Wow! That's great! You always hear the stories that lung cancer isn't that way! I've known two people taken, so far, & it isn't long, so that's TERRIFIC! > [Original Message] > From: Sheila Kline <sheilakline47@yahoo.com> > To: <PaDutch-Life@rootsweb.com> > Date: 7/27/2007 2:24:47 PM > Subject: [PD-LIFE] TASTY CAKES & TNT BAKERY > > My husband, Barry sure does remember the TNT Bakery, and he too had one for lunch everyday in his lunch box...in school and when he was working and carried a lunch. His favorite was the apple. > Thanks for the info on the Wixon's shoe fly pies. I wonder if it matters what kind of molasses is used. Does anybody know...there is the unsulphured kind, and I think different colors - like the different grades of Maple syrup.? I have some unsulphured here, and some sorghum. > And what about those yummy Tasty Cakes? We have lived in different parts of the country, and could not believe that they did not sell Tasty Cakes? Love the Butterscotch Krumpets, and the chocolate Tandy Cakes!! > > And also wanted to say how sorry we are to hear of the illness from Anna!! God be with her and help her keep faith during this very difficult time!! Barry has had mouth cancer 3 times, and recently was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer...but he is currently cancer free after an intensive program of detox, restricted diet, and a lot of natural juicing!! He had 2 tumors on the right lung, and 2 in the lymph nodes, and they were all GONE when he had a chest x-ray 2 months ago!! He had to eliminate ALL sugar, (except in natural fruits & vegetables), all meat, all dairy products, and eat eveything organic that we could find in our area. He also did a detox program of a liver flush, and takes something called "Super Food Plus", and enzyme tablets that help metabolize the food he eats, and must be finished eating by about 2:00 so his body can digest the food that he was consumed. He also uses a detox tea about 2 x a week, and takes a capsule that causes the periostolic > muscle in the intestine to work property...part of the detox program., and he is now taking Liquid Flax Linguens to help put some weight on him....best to put in organic cottage cheese, but we have not found the organic low fat yet, so he is using that in juice. He has lost a lot of weight, but I have lost 18 pounds by being on this diet with him. Please say a prayer for him that he will continue to be able to resist the foods that are so tempting!! He is now having fish or chicken (natural) 2 x a week, and using a sugar substiture called Xylotol...no Splenda, or NutraSweet because that is chemically processed....he has NOTHING that is chemically processed - only organic and natural...even the eggs are all natural from the Amish in this area, and he cannot drink chlorine water...we are buying bottled, spring water to use for drinking and cooking. > > His doctors are all amazed, and want to know what he did so that they can share with their colleages! > Just wanted to pass this along to you. Cancer is a terrible thing, and when he had mouth cancer the first time, he had the max for radiation, so when he got the lung cancer, radiation was not an option, and where the tumors were made them totally inoperable....so what he did was a "last ditch" attempt.....what did he have to lose??? We also know that God has been the overseer in all of this, so Praise to Him for giving my nephew who researched all of this for him, the knowledge to help!! > > It does not work for everybody....there is a lot involved in it....but there are many success stories, and I just wanted to pass along his! 3. My husband likes the greens, I think its collard greens. Is there a certain time of year their "IN"? When they're cheap at the stores, & what do I look for? They always have stuff unmarked at the Wal-mart where I shop, & sometimes I do look, but find nothing to suit me. Thanks for the tips girls! I know nothing about them. Ham, sounds good! I didn't know you added that too! That sounds similar to Kilbassi & saurkraut, you just need to know HOW TO cook it! Perhaps I'll try again too!? The combinations ounds yummy! Thanks for the recipe, Sue!!! I guess that's like grits & bacon! I love those too! I always buy them in the packets of 10! 1. [PD-LIFE] TO ANSWER, 'WHERE IS RAMPS?"
    2. Sheila Kline
    3. Tom, Ramps isn't where...it's what? It is a food that is actually a wild leek that has a very pungent smell, and a strong, but delicious taste. They are considered a real delicacy here in the spring when they come up in the woods, or in "ramp patches". To find a patch of ramps, is like finding a good stream stocked with golden trout!! You can type in ramps food in the yahoo search engine, and go to Ask.com, and if has a very good description of ramps - how they date back to 1530 in records. An interesting read. One site, refers to them as "Soul food" again, so I guess we have soul here in WV, along with the grits, chittlins', hog mawls, sweet iced tea, collard greens, brown beans, and some occasional "moon shine", or dandelion wine thrown in....oops, I didn't just say that...you imagined it! 1. [PD-LIFE] WHERE MERCER COUNTY, WV IS LOCATED
    2. Sheila Kline
    3. To answer Cathy's questions....Mercer County is located in the southern part of WV...south of Beckley, WV, and about 1 1/2 hrs. from Roanoke, VA, and 1 1/4 hrs. from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Bluefield WV is a a twin city with Bluefield, WV...was once a booming coal town, but today is a typical small town America place to live! We have country food and country names like "Country Girl Road", and "Possum Hollow" Road, and foods like Ramps, and brown beans. People actually get degrees in Ramp Biology, and Ramp dinners here are like the fire company breakfasts in PA. Monday is still brown bean day, when women do the "warsh", and let the brown beans simmer from sunup to sundown. Ummm good! Wanted to say to barefootrebelgirl that I can relate to her delicious cornbread, catfish, collard greens, and SWEET iced tea - the only way to drink it south of the Mason Dixon line. Back to Mercer County...we have two towns/cities here. There is Princeton, and Bluefield, and the markets that we shop are Kroger and Food City. Our Acme closed about 2 years ago, and of course, we have Wal-Mart...what I call "Wal-Mart USA", since I feel that it is like a city within itself!! Not good for small town businesses that were struggling to make a go of it when Wal-Mart megalopolis came in. I am doing my genealogy right now, and I am actually related to Sam Walton so I had better watch what I say. It has helped a lot of people, but I have boycotted it because they are not carrying the organic foods anymore! My way of having a voice in this big, ole' sea of "commercialism". I really enjoy hearing about other parts of the country! Your hillbilly and PA Dutch friends, Sheila and Barry oh yes, we have eaten "good, spring ground hog, rabbits and squirrels"...country food! --------------------------------- Got a little couch potato? 1. [PD-LIFE] Wixon's Shoo-fly Pie
    2. Karen Fox
    3. Yep, I live up the hill on W. Broad Street, so I am pretty darn close to the bakery LOL. The address and phone # you gave for Wixon's Barkery are current and correct. The area code for the phone # is 610. I grew up on Wixon's shoofly pies and they are great! But, last summer I tasted the shoofly pies that Shady Maple's in-store bakery makes and it was even more delicious than Wixon's. The only problem is, I have to drive to Lancaster County to Shady Maple Market (in East Earl on Rt 23) to buy my "fix". When that's not practical, I sure don't complain about "making do" with Wixon's shoofly pies! Shady Maple also bakes up an awesome shoofly cake in their in-store bakery department. When I drive to Shady Maple I pass the TnT Bakery in Bowmansville. They make the best snack sized double crusted pies, both fruit and "pudding" filled. TnT pies are sold retail all over the general area in supermarkets and conveniance stores. They were a lunch box staple when I was growing up and they are still the best when it comes to single serving pies. They still are sold encased in a waxed paper wrapping! 2. We dealt with it in New England because a woman was smoking in the office and made a fog bank out of it.? Bothered Lydia to where she was unable to work in those conditions.? In those days, nothing was done.? Now, it would be a different story.? We are talking about 15-20 years ago.? 1. [PD-LIFE] TASTY CAKES & TNT BAKERY
    2. Sheila Kline
    3. My husband, Barry sure does remember the TNT Bakery, and he too had one for lunch everyday in his lunch box...in school and when he was working and carried a lunch. Do you who live in Florida, and the South find them? How about other areas? He also uses a detox tea about 2 x a week, and takes a capsule that causes the periostolic muscle in the intestine to work property...part of the detox program., and he is now taking Liquid Flax Linguens to help put some weight on him....best to put in organic cottage cheese, but we have not found the organic low fat yet, so he is using that in juice. It's called "The Incurable's Program" that cures!!
